“The Sword And The Screen: The Japanese Period Film 1915-1960” was a groundbreaking collaboration between the Council on East Asian Studies at Yale University and the National Film Center of the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, marking the first time Japan’s national film archive had co-sponsored an event with a foreign university. The film series presented rare Japanese samurai films from the collection of the National Film Center, highlighting the abundant variety of Japan's most famous film genre. 近年，日本語教育では，日本語中・上級レベルにおいて内容重視型カリキュラムや批判的思考力を取り入れた学習活動を採用する動向がみられている。一方で，初級レベルでは，教科書の基本文法，語彙，表現，漢字を学習するという言語習得を重要視した伝統的なカリキュラムが組まれている。ここで，問題になるのが，教科書中心の初級カリキュラムに慣れた学習者が中級レベルに進む際に，教科書外の教材を中心とした内容重視型カリキュラムで求められる自律学習能力に欠けているという現状である。本稿では，情報リテラシーをどのように言語学習活動に応用できるのかを検討し，日本語教師と図書館員の協働作業のもと，日本語教育と情報リテラシー教育を融合させたカリキュラムを作成し，アメリカ私立女子大学の１つであるスミス大学の日本語１年生コースで実践した例を紹介する。初級レベルから情報リテラシーを言語学習能力と共に培うことは，学習者の初級から中級レベルへの移行をスムーズにし，言語・文化・社会情報に関わる内容重視型の学習活動に必要とされる自律学習能力の育成に役に立つのではないかと考える。

Japanese Nuclear Power Policy: Forty Years Of Construction, Confusion, And Conflict, Sarah Fries

How could Japan, a victim of nuclear weapons, become the world's third largest nuclear power country? Drawing upon English and Japanese sources as well as pro-nuclear and anti-nuclear publications, I stove to provide a balanced analysis of Japan's nuclear power debate and context in which to understand the 2011 Fukushima Crisis. By analyzing the role of the press and the anti-nuclear and pro-nuclear coalitions, I provide arguments as to why the Japanese energy policy has been predominantly pro-nuclear since the 1950s and hazard an argument that nuclear power will likely continue to exist in Japan.

In this thesis, I examine the influences of westernization, the tension between Japanese modernity and tradition, and the stories of Hans Christian Andersen on Ogawa Mimei’s children’s stories. I begin the body of my thesis with a brief historical background of Japan, beginning with the start of the Meiji period in 1868. Informed by the theory of social constructivism and computer-mediated communication (CMC), wiki-mediated collaborative writing has been increasingly implemented in second or foreign language classes. However, to date, no research has addressed students’ interaction and negotiation of their social relationship during wiki-mediated collaboration. Drawing on politeness theory, particularly Brown and Levinson (1987)’s taxonomy of politeness strategies, this study analyzed the wiki-mediated discourse of one collaborative writing group in a Chinese EFL context. This particular writing group consisted of three EFL college students at a southwestern university in China. 由原始社會，自人類有思考能力起，就對四周環境有無數推測。然而原始人類面對很多不能解釋的自然現象的時候，礙於知識水平，他們作出就現代科學而言不甚理性的推測，這是人類對自然現象解說的初步嘗試。1本文的主題是女媧，我們對她熟知的母題是人類起源的神話，因為先民思考「我們從哪裏來？我們為何有生老病死？為何我們有別於其他動物？」等關於人類自身的問題。2一般而言，中國神話奉女媧為人類的始祖，但女媧在神話中的形象複雜多樣，除了創造神和配偶神，還有救世神的角色，所以本文內容會圍繞上述的幾個角色續一探討。

This study examines the role of compliment topic by analyzing compliment responses by Japanese and American college students. Compliment responses can be seen as solutions for maintaining a balance between (1) a preference to avoid self-praise and (2) a preference to accept or agree with the compliment (Pomerantz 1978). Building on studies showing that response strategies can be influenced by compliment content and context, the study analyzed responses to compliments on ability, achievement, belongings, appearance, and personal characteristics by determining the subjects' choice of response strategy--categorized as acceptance, avoidance, or rejection--for each compliment topic. In her Renaissance Trilogy of Murder (1988), Shiono Nanami (塩野七生, 1937- ) rejuvenates the classical genre of historical crime fiction, dismantling a canonical outlook of late Renaissance Italy. As historiographer of Ancient Rome, the Italian Renaissance, and the Mediterranean naval epic, Shiono achieved literary stardom in Japan in the 1980s, and has been internationally known for her pragmatist approaches to history and contemporary politics. Her writing has reassessed established history from the non-Western and non-Christian viewpoints. Most notably, her magnum opus, Rōmajin no monogatari (Res GestaePopuli Romani—Tales of the Romans) (published 1992-2006) tirelessly describes the empire’s politics, beginning …

This essay studies a tanci work, A Histoire of Heroic Women and Men (1905), as a case which reflects the intersecting themes of crossdressing, gender representation and the literary form of tanci. Written tanci, appropriated and redeveloped by educated women to tell stories of female crossdressers, scholars, and military leaders, offers a meaningful intervention in the dominant social and cultural discourses of womanhood in late imperial China. In the fictional realm, women’s acts of crossdressing transcend the Confucian ideological prescriptions of feminine identity, displaying their heroic efforts to pursue autonomy in a patriarchal culture. This essay will explore the narrative mode of feminine melodrama in Love in a Fallen City, a novella by the Shanghainese writer Eileen Chang (1920–1995). Chang has gained international fame for her depiction of Chinese women in the tumultuous transitional period prior to the modern era, especially traditional women figures that are in stark contrast with the New Woman ideal portrayed by her contemporary writers. Born in Shanghai, Chang was a descendant of an eminent late imperial official and received western education in Hong Kong under the influence of her open-minded mother. The growth of urban areas is known to affect different species of wildlife in varying ways. Many organisms have exhibited declines in abundance due to habitat loss, while overall species diversity decreases. Bats can serve as reliable indicators of habitat quality and level of anthropogenic disturbance. To investigate urbanization impacts on a Midwestern bat community, I analyzed nine years of mist-net captures from a study area on the edge of Indianapolis, Indiana, where the percentage of urbanized ground cover ranged from zero to 26%, within 1.3-km of a net site. I conducted a study of the relationship between prey availability and foraging habitat selection of Indiana bats (Myotis sodalis), big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus), eastern red bats (Lasiurus borealis) and evening bats (Nycticeius humeralis) in an urban-rural landscape matrix of southwestern Indianapolis. Insects were collected from nine different habitat types found within the range of these species. Insect data were collected from 2006 to 2008 using sticky traps placed in each habitat type.
