The Challenge Of Chinese Character Acquisition: Leveraging Multimodality In Overcoming A Centuries-Old Problem, Justin Olmanson, Xianquan Chrystal Liu 2017 University of Nebraska at Lincoln

The Challenge Of Chinese Character Acquisition: Leveraging Multimodality In Overcoming A Centuries-Old Problem, Justin Olmanson, Xianquan Chrystal Liu

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

For learners unfamiliar with character-based or logosyllabic writing systems, the process of developing literacy in written Chinese poses significantly more obstacles than learning to read and write in a second language like Portuguese or Cherokee. In this article we describe the linguistic nature of Chinese characters; we outline traditional and new media approaches to Chinese character acquisition; we unpack how multimodal technologies combined with computational linguistics might be used to provide new types of support for Chinese character learning; and we offer a design that incorporates several of these concepts into a digital writing support tool that could work as …

Theories Of The Self, Race, And Essentialization In Buddhism In The United States During The “Yellow Peril,” 1899-1957, Ryan Anningson 2017 Wilfrid Laurier University

Theories Of The Self, Race, And Essentialization In Buddhism In The United States During The “Yellow Peril,” 1899-1957, Ryan Anningson

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This dissertation is an intellectual history tracing developing notions of the Self in Buddhism through Buddhist publications during the years from 1899-1957. I define this time period as the Era of the Yellow Peril, due to common views in the United States of an Asian “other” which formed a larger clash of civilizations globally. 1899-1957 was marked by pessimism and dread due to two World Wars and the Great Depression, while popular and academic cultures argued for the validity of race sciences, and the application of these “sciences” through eugenics. Buddhism in the United States was created through a global …

The Question Of Remilitarization: Is Japan's Pacifist Nature In Danger Of Reform, Shanisha Coram 2017 Scripps College

The Question Of Remilitarization: Is Japan's Pacifist Nature In Danger Of Reform, Shanisha Coram

Scripps Senior Theses

Though Article 9 has not been revised since it was implemented in 1947, the past two decades have seen an increase in Japanese military capability due to the government’s loose interpretation of Article 9 and its limitations to allow for Japanese involvement in collective security operations internationally. As a result, a number of Japanese political scholars and newspapers have projected the possibility of not only Japanese constitutional revision but also the re-militarization of Japan as well. Interested in finding out whether or not this projection has any likelihood of success in the future, I have posed the following question: Why …

Eurasians and Racial Capital in a "Race War" by W. Puck Brecher

The ubiquity of racist propaganda in Japan and the U.S. during the Pacific War and the extraordinary cruelty of the fighting have fostered the perception that Japanese and Americans harbored a deep racial hatred for each other. Indeed, historical research convincingly interprets the Pacific War as a “race war” within the contexts of military engagement and state rhetoric. We know little, …

Śākya Chokden, Yaroslav Komarovski 2017 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Śākya Chokden, Yaroslav Komarovski

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

During his long writing and teaching career, Śākya Chokden (1428-1507) developed a novel, and in many respects unusual approach to the key systems of Buddhist thought and practice. A recurrent theme given special attention in his numerous works is the question of the relationship between conflicting conceptual models of ultimate reality and the means of its realization on the one hand, and practical outcomes of utilizing those models in contemplative practice on the other. The position he articulates based on critical comparison of several Buddhist systems of thought and practice, is that despite their different, and often conflicting, conceptual approaches …

Oceans Of Space, Stephanie Steinbrecher '16 2016 Scripps College

Oceans Of Space, Stephanie Steinbrecher '16

EnviroLab Asia

"Oceans of Space" relates my observations of the 2016 EnviroLab Asia Clinic Trip to Singapore and Sarawak, Malaysia. In this meditation, the concept of space serves as a lens to examine assumptions of geopolitical, historical, and philosophical positioning—regionally and globally. At the center of my inquiry is EnviroLab's connection to the Dayak communities in Baram, Sarawak. This region is experiencing dramatic social and ecological change as a result of industrial development. By triangulating my subjective impressions of this space, various knowledge systems, and the qualitative data EnviroLab gathered in Southeast Asia, I aim to untangle some paradoxes that complicate the …

Cochlear Implants And Related Neurotechnologies: Japanese Perspectives In Deaf Neuroethics, Zachary Clayton Abbott 2016 Gallaudet University

Cochlear Implants And Related Neurotechnologies: Japanese Perspectives In Deaf Neuroethics, Zachary Clayton Abbott

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

Asian neuroscience and neurotechnology (neuroS/T) research and development will surpass that of the United States and Europe, achieving a 60% increase in overall market growth, within the next decade. One area of ethical interest in neuroS/T involves auditory technologies: cochlear implants, middle ear prosthetics, bone-anchor hearing aids. A survey collected data on Japanese and U.S. attitudes of deafness as a disability, awareness of auditory technologies, and beliefs regarding psychosocial implications of such interventions. This survey is particularly timely because of shifts in attitudes toward these technologies and deaf identity between younger and older Japanese people in the direction of U.S. …

Individual Differences In Intentional And Unintentional Exposure To Online Pornography Among Hong Kong Chinese Adolescents, Cecilia M. S. Ma, Daniel T. L. Shek, Catie C. W. Lai

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

The current study aimed to test how gender and religion affect unintentional and intentional exposure to online pornography in Chinese adolescents. A total of 1401 secondary school students (age range from 11 to 16 years) participated in the study. Findings from multivariate analyses show that males reported higher levels of unintentional and intentional exposure to online pornography than females. Significant differences were found in adolescents’ religiosity, with students who had religious beliefs reporting a lower level of unintentional exposure to online pornography than their counterparts without religious beliefs. In terms of intentional exposure to online pornography, adolescents were more likely …

Crime And Culture : A Thematic Reading Of Sherlock Holmes And His Adaptations., Britney Broyles 2016 University of Louisville

Crime And Culture : A Thematic Reading Of Sherlock Holmes And His Adaptations., Britney Broyles

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on the adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes character and stories into the television shows Sherlock and Elementary on air today. The project will consider three central questions: 1) Why is this Victorian detective hero still popular in the twenty-first century and what has remained constant and still resonates with modern audiences? 2) Both television shows transport Holmes in time by setting their narratives in the present day; therefore, what has been changed in this process of adaptation? 3) How do these changes represent shifts in our cultural thinking about important aspects of humanistic inquiry? The …

Mythbusting Park Chung Hee: A Reexamination Of Park And His Coup, Justin Malzac 2016 Pittsburg State University

Mythbusting Park Chung Hee: A Reexamination Of Park And His Coup, Justin Malzac

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

Park Chung-Hee is a divisive figure. For some he is a saint that rescued his country from the brink of collapse and helped it rise into modernity. For others he is a devil, an iron-fisted dictator who cared more about his own power than his people. Both of these are politically slanted myths promoted as part of a corresponding political agenda. But even politically neutral writings on Park unwittingly conduct a mythmaking of their own. This paper is an attempt to show that Park Chung-Hee has become a mythological figure in Korean history because the scope of his power, agency …

Black Noise, White Noise, And Ghostly Sound: The Ontology Of Noise In The Context Of Deleuze's Conception Of Event, Yuhui Jiang, Yan Zheng 2016 Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Black Noise, White Noise, And Ghostly Sound: The Ontology Of Noise In The Context Of Deleuze's Conception Of Event, Yuhui Jiang, Yan Zheng

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

As a complicated concept, Deleuze's "event" has traversed different phases of his thinking. However, one should always return to Logique du sens to have a thorough and proper understanding of this idea. Through detailed interpretation of the Stoic theory about "incorporeal", causality and temporality, this article intends to justify the ontological priority of event. The most recent arguments from the speculative realism have also shed a new light on this guiding line implicit in LS. This emerging correlation took its initial shape especially through the contemporary noise music that not only serves as the figurative counterpoint to the philosophical argument, …

Event And Art: Lyotard's Politics Of Phrase And The Postmodern Sublime, Hui Zhou 2016 Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Event And Art: Lyotard's Politics Of Phrase And The Postmodern Sublime, Hui Zhou

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Starting from the relationship between modern French philosophy and event and time, this article attempts to expound the main idea of the politics of phrase oriented to différend, to compare the differences and similarities between Kant's reflective judgment and the judgment of Lyotard, to analyze the reasons why postmodern art finally leads to the sublime, and thus to point out the special significance of event to postmodern theories. In the end, this article reflects on the oscillation of postmodern theories between the activeness and passiveness of the subject, and the price that elites have to pay for detaching themselves from …

Literature Through The Lens Of Davidson's Event Theory, Qiao Zhang 2016 Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Literature Through The Lens Of Davidson's Event Theory, Qiao Zhang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

In contemporary literary theory, we discuss literary eventlargely withthe theoretical source of continental philosophy. This articleaims to draw an analytical philosophical picture forliterary event through Davidson's event theory. It investigates Davidsonianliterary event from two aspects. On the one hand, according to Davidson's ontology of event, the nature of literature should beseen as the particulars, and the way of discussing literature should be changed from "existence" to "happening", hence the shift from ontology of literature to performance of literature. On the other hand, literary event represents intentional literary action, and a successful literaryaction presents how the writer usesidiolects to communicate successfully …

Mirror Image Deviation In Cross-Cultural Transmission: A Reevaluation Of The Debate On H. D. Thoreau As A Hermit Or A Fake Hermit In Dushu, Luechang Liu 2016 Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Mirror Image Deviation In Cross-Cultural Transmission: A Reevaluation Of The Debate On H. D. Thoreau As A Hermit Or A Fake Hermit In Dushu, Luechang Liu

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

In the dissemination of H. D. Thoreau in China over the past 90 years, one heated debate with Dushu as the main platform occurred over Thoreau as a hermit or a fake one. By nature, this debate is a false statement, because Thoreau has never claimed to be a hermit. Being similar to the hermit and Chinese yinyi culture, a visible tendency to detach oneself from society and live in seclusion, Thoreau is arbitrarily judged as a hermit or a fake one. From the perspective of Chinese yinyi culture, some Chinese scholars analyzed the period, place, motivation and lifestyle of …

A New Interpretation Of "Xing, Guan, Qun, Yuan", Qizhou Wang 2016 Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

A New Interpretation Of "Xing, Guan, Qun, Yuan", Qizhou Wang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Confucius puts forward the idea that "poetry helps to inspire, to observe, to keep company, and to express grievances" (xing, guan, qun, yuan), which had a huge impact on Chinese poetics. Among numerous interpreters of this idea, Zhu Xi was the most important authority. While he argues that the interpretation of "guan" by scholars in the Song Dynasty was unreliable, his own interpretations of Confucius's words were not logically consistent, either. Situated in the context of his own educational ideas and practices, one would discover that Confucius's words are about neither the composition nor ontology of poetry, but its use. …

The Primer Tradition And Reflections On Chinese Education Over The Past 100 Years, Zihui Zhu 2016 Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The Primer Tradition And Reflections On Chinese Education Over The Past 100 Years, Zihui Zhu

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

"Initiating Children's literacy by musical language" has been an important characteristic and fine tradition of elementary Chinese education in ancient China. In primers of this kind, it is characterized by syntactical antithesis and rhyming which were derived from the profound understanding of the ancients about the characteristics of the Chinese language. In the elementary education, it not only satisfies children's "willingness and readiness" to learn, but also exposes them to the aesthetic of Chinese language and culture. However, unfortunately, in the past one hundred years, due to the unscrupulous transplant or absorption of foreign education thought, the fine primer tradition …

Symptomatic Reading, Event, And Iconography: A Brief Discussion Of Georges Didi-Huberman's Image-Knowledge, Wen Zhao 2016 Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Symptomatic Reading, Event, And Iconography: A Brief Discussion Of Georges Didi-Huberman's Image-Knowledge, Wen Zhao

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

As one of the most active art historians in France, Georges Didi-Huberman takes "event" as his theoretical basis, by which he makes possible the renewal of the critical tradition of Aby Warburg. Didi-Huberman is innovative because, on the one hand, he confirms Warburg's special epistemology that is situated within Walter Benjamin's horizon of event-truth implied in dialectic images, and, on the other, he legitimizes Benjamin's symptomatic reading of events by introducing Warburg's image-knowledge into iconographical studies. Didi-Hubermanian critical iconography has changed the look of contemporary French art history, disrupted the linear historical narrative of art in academic tradition, and ultimately …

Behavior Language, Unconscious Structure And Literary Activities, Dakang Ma 2016 Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Behavior Language, Unconscious Structure And Literary Activities, Dakang Ma

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Human's consciousness is constructed by the memory of speech acts, and the unconscious is constructed by the memory of behavior language. The similarities and differences between the two languages (behaviors) determine the relation and differentiation between the structure of consciousness and that of the unconscious. Therefore, it does not hold water that Lacan uses the structure of language to explain the unconscious. Aesthetic activities are the full cooperation between consciousness and the unconscious, so the characteristics of the two kinds of behaviors (languages) determine the dual character of aesthetic and artistic activities.
