The nature of tense in classical Japanese is vague and uncertain, sometimes appearing to be interpretable by combinations of particular verbs with specific verbal auxiliaries and sometimes appearing to be absent altogether. The present study introduces a series of these so-called tense-bearing auxiliaries in classical Japanese while attempting to show that their use can be ambiguous based on the contexts in which they appear. The notions of context driven semantic formalism are explored as a possible means to derive truth from these utterances that seem otherwise tenseless when taken out of context. The idea of cultural diversity in the workplace is a popular one, generating much discussion about the inclusion of and affirmative action toward minorities. However, these conversations rarely involve Asian Americans, who despite above-average levels of educational achievement, household income, and employment, find themselves underrepresented in and shut-out of upper-level management positions. In this project, I investigated the stereotype of East-Asian Americans as a model minority (created by non-Asians) to find out why East-Asian Americans are underrepresented in upper-level management in corporate workplaces, a phenomenon known as the “bamboo ceiling.” I explored a variety of scholarly sources that analyzed the …

This thesis examines changes between historical and contemporary iterations of Chinese vegetarianism discourse. Vegetarian discourse can be divided into two categories: entitlement (which focuses primarily on animals’ entitlement to life) and endangerment (which focuses on meat as a contaminating agent). This project attempts to determine how Chinese vegetarianism fits into this framework. It uses interviews with Chinese international students at Oberlin College, analysis of Chinese vegetarian blogs, and academic work by Chinese and non-Chinese academics to better understand the state of vegetarianism today as compared to the past. This study examines the relationship between socioeconomic factors and voter turnout in South Korea. In particular, the determinants of the turnout in the 2012 and 2017 presidential elections in the Republic of Korea are analyzed by using the aggregated data in terms of municipal-level divisions. The findings partially support previous studies. The education level and the percentage of primary industry workers in the district have a significantly positive impact on turnout. Holding the other variables constant, as the proportion of the population over higher education in the district increases, voter turnout grows. Likewise, as the ratio of primary industry workers …

By comparing the interpretation of dharma in the ancient Indian Laws of Manu (Manusmṛti) with the concepts of dao in the Chinese classic, Daodejing, this thesis discusses that, despite the plausible perception that the former represents despotic, hierarchical governance while the latter promotes freedom (and even anarchy), the two texts in fact share a similar envision of human flourishing through the following of one's nature, as well as a foundational belief that both laws and political ideals emerge from nature.

This study acoustically analyzes 13,540 vowel tokens of Beryozovka Ewen with the aid of automated post-transcriptional processing technique. The focus of the analysis is on the acoustic correlates of [RTR], which is the harmonic feature of the language. In addition to the first three formants, acoustic values representing spectral tilt such as H1−H2, H1−A2, and B1 are measured as potential acoustic cues of [RTR]. The results show that F1, F3, and B1 are the most reliable cues of the feature and that H1− H2 and H1−A2 are nearly reliable. These acoustic cues are also shown to interact with length and …

本論文試從成長小說的角度，探討小說中白梅的女性意識，從遺失自我、自我意識醒覺到實踐自我的整個歷程，討論她如何逃離父權社會，建立自我，成為一個獨立個體。除了以成長小說理論分析白梅從妓女到母親的成長歷程，還會佐以弗洛伊德的精神分析學中的人格論和美國心理學家亞伯拉罕‧馬斯洛（Abraham Maslow）的需求層次理論，展示白梅的心理變化。接著，論文會討論白梅在父權社會下脫困的方式──成為給予男性生命的母親。

小說中可以看見處於社會底層的女性，即使生活在矛盾之中，受到社會壓迫，仍然嘗試掙脫求存。這正是黃春明筆下小人物的特色：雖然社會地位卑微，受盡屈辱，卻依然嘗試去解決問題。〈看海的日子〉歌頌了小人物白梅在強大的壓力下生存下去的毅力和精神。

提及李翰祥的風月片，總有評論家落入男性凝視（male gaze）的簡單批判。可見他們在李氏跨越七十至九十年代的《金瓶梅》風月片系列中，完全無視了女角色間的凝視、偷窺和偷聽。她們表面是忠於父權的妻子或僕人，暗地裡卻是偷窺得不亦樂乎繼而外遇的淫婦。李氏挪用原著的色情元素，以晚明資本主義下的道德失序，回應香港七十年代金錢至上、權威不受信任的意識。當時社會不再熱衷傳統倫理，投身於色情片熱潮中，因此觀眾享受的不單是李氏鏡頭下的美人，也是她們在凝視中拓展身分，主動開發情慾的反叛精神。她們甚至不怕男性凝視，最怕男性不凝視，因此搔首弄姿、嬌聲嬌氣，時而淫蕩，時而溫柔，讓至高無上的西門慶拜倒在她們裙下。

本文主要分析《風流韻事（蕙蓮篇）》（1973）、《金瓶雙艷》（1974）和《金瓶風月》（1991）中的四位女主角：金蓮、春梅、瓶兒和蕙蓮。探討李氏如何表現凝視間的陰性認同，並從女性間的認同分析她們對情慾的不同追求，如何（不）抗衡以西門作代表的父權，以一雙媚眼遊走於婚姻的曖昧地帶。

A Study Of Acculturation In Chinese-Mongolian Er’Rentai Folk Opera, Luyin Shao

Er’rentai, or Mongolian dance and song duets, is a genre of folk opera in the Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region. Er’rentai performances can be categorized into two styles—the “western-style” and the “eastern-style.” The aim of this thesis is to explore the acculturation in Chinese-Mongolian er’rentai genre in the following ways. First, I address the historical background of the western-style er’rentai. Then, I draw on fieldwork with Huo Banzhu, a famous er’rentai musician, to introduce contemporary state of er’rentai's development. 韓寒的散文寫作手法別樹一格。在1999年，韓寒參加新概念作文大賽即席創作，以〈杯中窺人〉一文奪下首獎。他自此踏上了散文創作之路，出版不同的散文集，如《通稿2003》、《飄移中國》、《青春》等。當網絡熱潮興起，他在博客發佈大量的散文，內容主題多樣，漸具個人寫作特色。而隨時間的推移亦可看出他的散文風格上有所轉變。

本文選取韓寒不同時期的散文集作研究對象，包括：《零下一度》、《通稿2003》、《青春》、《飄移中國》、《出發》和《我所理解的生活》，從語音、語匯、修辭和語法四方面，分析其散文作品寫作語言特色及變化。

首先有緒論作簡介，其後進入正文部份。正文第一節分析韓寒散文作品的語音的特色，第二節分析韓寒散文作品的詞匯使用上的特色，第三節分析韓寒散文作品的修辭特色，第四節分析韓寒散文作品的語法特色，第五節分析韓寒散文語言特色有以上變化的原因。最後為總結。

《粵音正讀字彙》反切注音商榷, Kwing Sheung Lam

現時坊間能夠找到的粵音字典眾多，當中對現時粵音影響最大的非《粵音正讀字彙》莫屬。此書記錄了一萬多個粵讀音，強調「正讀」，即是以《廣韻》的反切注音作為主要依據，每個音讀均配以反切，決不接受有別於「正讀」的常讀錯音。編者在處理繁多的反切注音時，偶有不慎而出現錯漏，這方面值得注意。

本文針對此書的三個可商榷之處作一綜合分析。第一、此書以配詞方式注音，音隨義異。但是一些音讀和字義未按照《廣韻》或其他韻書、古注所記的配對，出現甲音配以乙義，乙義配以甲音的情況。第二、此書一些反切及被切字的讀音非完全吻合；另外一些反切並未與韻書中字義的反切完全對應。第三、此書的異讀情況甚多，甚至一些異讀音已非為時下人所知，筆者認為沒有一一列出的必要。

論甲骨文合文與現今合字書寫, Yuk Kwan Ma

合文又稱為合書，即指把兩個或以上的漢字合寫，構成一個文字單位。合文是古漢字中一種特殊但又常見的現象，在甲骨文、金文及戰國文字中都不難找到合文的蹤跡。與合體字不同，合文只在書寫層面上把文字結合起來，對其字音及字義均沒有產生影響及變化。

就目前現有的出土文獻顯示，合文的現象最早出現於殷商時期，更可謂大盛於戰國時期，及至秦漢時期，合文的數量才逐漸減少。而《甲骨文編》、《金文編》、《戰國文字編》、《古文字類編》等記錄古文字的專書，均有專闢「合文」一項，收錄了不同數量同時又為數不少的合文，足見合文於古文字發展中的重要性，而此類專書亦大大方便了後世對於合文的研究。因此，雖然現今合文的影響力已大不如前，但研究古文字合文的現象對了解漢字的歷史及演變就有很大的幫助。

縱使古文字合文的盛況難以再於現今社會出現，但有不少以合字書寫方式的文字仍然得以在現今社會流傳，如「招財進寶」這個為人所熟識的字，更有不少出自網上討論區的「合字書寫」創作，這種書寫方式與古文字合文的形式或多或少有相似之處。故本論文將先以甲骨文合文的例子作分析，探求合文的定義、結構、使用情況及衰微的原因，並將以現今合字書寫的例子作討論，研究合字書寫於現今社會的可行性。

馮小青本事戲曲改編 : 以《春波影》、《風流院》及《療妬羮》為例, Chi Wai Cheung

馮小青為明代才女，其流傳的詩文有十多首。十八而亡，早夭的小青為明清文人同情，在明清時期引起一股小青熱潮，多齣以小青為藍本的戲曲作品誕生，而《紅樓夢》的林黛玉一角，亦是受小青影響而成。 本文因而選取其中三齣最具代表性的戲曲作品——《春波影》、《風流院》及《療妬羹》，討論它們與小青本事的關係。從而分析戲曲史上小青故事及形象的流變。 本文主要分析《小青傳》和三種戲曲作品在情節安排以及人物形象塑造的差異。第一章為全文諸論。第二章分析《小青傳》中重要情節及人物形象。第三章依照第二章的分析，與三劇比較對照，分別出傳記與劇本在情節及人物上的差異。最後，本文比較三劇，分析三劇在改編上的共性以及差異。第四章分析三劇與《牡丹亭》重合之處。第五章為小青在劇中的形象分析。第六章為總結。

論《長生殿》楊貴妃的形象建構與主題思想的關係, Shu Ting Lau

《長生殿》寫唐明皇與楊貴妃生死情深的釵合情緣，李、楊的故事早已廣為流傳，《長生殿》並非先例，然而比較起前人的文學作品，洪昇在楊貴妃的人物形象塑造上明顯有其創新之處，加上洪昇在《長生殿》結局中以喜劇收場的處理手法亦有別於其他文學作品，因此本文集中比對歷來楊貴妃在史書、文學作品及《長生殿》中的人物形象，分析楊貴妃在人物形象上的演化，再結合《長生殿》中洪昇對於人物和結局上具新意的處理，從而剖析其主題思想。

本論文分為六個部分︰第一章為導言。第二章分析楊貴妃的歷史書寫。第三章從不同文學作品中剖析楊貴妃的文學形象。第四章從《長生殿》中疏理楊貴妃人物形象的演化軌跡。第五章則總結楊貴妃在《長生殿》中的形象而分析其改動與主題思想的關係。最後第六章為結語。

邵長蘅對明文評價取向之研究, Man Ling Leung

宋犖認為清初文章之盛在於邵長蘅、魏禧和侯方域三子，但從前人的研究成果而言，魏禧及侯方域的研究相當豐碩，惟獨邵長蘅的研究未受重視。因此，本文擬以邵長蘅親自編纂的全集《邵子湘全集》為研究材料，從文章學的角度切入，研究邵長蘅對明文的取態。而《邵子湘全集》作為第一手研究材料，其研究價值較後世的論著為高，能如實反映邵長蘅的文論觀點。

本文共分為五章，第一章為序論，略述邵長蘅的生平、成就以及文獻概覽。第二章為邵長蘅對明文的反撥，結合歷史因素總結邵長蘅對明文的評價。第三章是明文救藥，透過歸納《邵子湘全集》的文論資料，整理邵長蘅對明文的建議，找出改善明文的方法。第四章為明代的典範作家，把邵長蘅挑選的明十家以及對他們的評價，對比今人對明清散文的評論，從而考察邵長蘅如何看待明文。第五章是結語，總結邵長蘅對明文的看法，和交代本論文在研究上的局限。

本論文嘗試以《三言》中與婦女婚外情相關的篇章，結合文獻考證，探討明代婦女發生婚外情與市民經濟的關係。第一章為緒論，將會疏理歷來學者對《三言》中的婦女形象和婚姻的研究成果。第二章將略述明代的市民經濟背景。第三章將會討論市民經濟下從商的實際情況。第四章會建基於商人經商的情況，分析明代商人妻子的心理狀態。第五章會探討明代的城市環境如何促成婦女婚外情。第三章至第五章之目的在於，結合《三言》中有關婦女婚外情的文本、相關歷史文獻和西方心理學和性學理論，逐步探討市民經濟發展下，婦女承受的心理負擔，然後再討論明代城市環境如何為婦女提供機會發展婚外情。第六章則為總結。
