School lunches around the world perform a vital role in children’s nutritional needs and overall health. These nutritional programs provide a chance for children to learn how to create a balanced meal and about the production and serving of food. However, many countries, including the United States and Japan, have taken different approaches to meet these goals, influenced by the needs of children and communities over time. The United States provides support, funding, and nutritional standards through the National School Lunch Program. Centralized Urban Planning And Economic Segregation: Wealth Inequality At Tell Asmar And Khafaja, Mesopotamia, Yoko Nishimura

This article explores a possible correlation between centralised planning and economic homogenisation within residential neighbourhoods in ancient cities. Pre-planned and constructed urban living quarters may have contributed to the concentration of residents with similar levels of material wealth. Distinct groups of people may be identified among different districts, neighbourhoods or specific sections within a neighbourhood at the intra-site level. Several examples from different parts of the world are given to show this correlation. Also, a case study to test this correlation is drawn from the third millennium B.C. cities of Tell Asmar and Khafajah in central Mesopotamia. Excavations at these …

Japan is in the midst of a population implosion. Schools struggle to fill classrooms, and vacant houses are a common sight in smaller towns. While the demographic shift makes it difficult to sustain traditional ways of life, it also brings opportunities for new possibilities. This essay highlights the challenges and opportunities of demographic change through the stories of two communities: Tsushima City in Aichi Prefecture and Ikuno Ward in Osaka City. In Tsushima, residents have embraced a more inclusive approach to their autumn festival, inviting women and non-residents to perform roles previously reserved for male residents. Thomas Pereira’S 'Lülü Zuanyao' 律呂纂要 (Ca. 1685): A Jesuit Music Theory Textbook For The Chinese Emperor, Qingfan Jiang

Thomas Pereira (1646–1708), a Portuguese Jesuit missionary, arrived in Beijing in 1672 and was appointed by the Kangxi Emperor (1654–1722) as his music tutor. For the emperor's music lessons, Pereira authored Lülü Zuanyao 律呂纂要 [Elements of Music] (ca. 1685), the first known Western music theory treatise written in Chinese. My translation includes the first half of Zuanyao that focuses on Western music notation, solmization, and the hexachordal system. As a product of the global circulation of musical knowledge in the early modern period, Zuanyao is significant in three ways. 回族作家張承志以他傳奇的人生經歷串聯起北方大陸的三大文明板塊，也即拉鐵摩爾所謂的「中國的內陸亞洲邊疆」。中國北部邊疆具有鮮明的內亞特性，其兩大義項即是民族性和生態性，這正是張承志文學書寫的重要內容，而且承载著作家獨特的宗教信仰和政治理想，暗含著作家的歷史心結與時代之思。進言之，作為「人民之子」和毛主義者，張承志的內亞書寫反覆辯駁中國社會轉型和文明抉擇的大問題，包括他對毛時代與後毛時代、繼續革命與告別革命、大陸與海洋、鄉村與城市、第三世界與西方中心等方面的看法，這些暴露他學者功底的歷史思辨或溢於言表，或幽靈般地融入他的內亞書寫，呈現出一種「生態政治」（eco-politics）的理念和特色，表明其左翼立場和民族情結。職是之故，本文試圖借鑒生態批評和族群理論、中國西北學和海外內亞研究的資源，以地域、時代和共同體三個維度入手，分章依次討論張承志的北方大河、蒙古草原、黃土高原和新疆天山，探討這些生態符號和地理類型如何成爲不同中國（性）的定義方式，奠定張承志「超越内亞，尋路中國」的思想路徑，以及追問其生態政治和民族認同背後的儒回淵源。重讀張承志這樣神話不再、負典異端和冷僻敏感的老作家，有助於我們回首來時路，在紛繁世局和中西學術之間找尋定位，重思中國，既檢討傳統漢族中心、邊疆式的文學批評，也回應海外新清史和華語語系等歷史及文學研究的「族群轉向」。

Role language, a term coined for the different kinds of speech employed by fictional characters according to their archetypes, is notoriously difficult to translate from Japanese into English. There is no direct way to express in English the sentence-ending particles, variations in verb conjugation, and differing first-person pronouns associated with role language, but translators can often work around these issues through effective word choice. In manga, translators are further helped by the aid of the medium’s visuals, which can contribute to the reader’s understanding of a character’s archetype. This paper explores an eco-aesthetic critique as it intertwines with island consciousness and theatrical performances in Taiwan. Focusing on Bare Feet Dance Theatre’s Tsiáh-Thóo (2020/2021) and TAI Body Theatre’s Red Earth (2019), both renowned for revitalizing Taiwanese cultural traditions, the study examines how these dance-theater productions embody and reactivate the traditional knowledge and/or practices of Han and Indigenous Taiwanese communities in a way that points to contemporary and near-future ecological crises. This study explores the relationship between different forms of racial harassment and mental health issues in Asian American college students. Asian American mental health is a growing concern in the field of public health. Asian Americans have the lowest treatment rates and some of the highest stigma levels of any demographic. They are also impacted by the model minority myth and discrimination, further alienating them from getting help. The topics of subtle racism, blatant racism, and current racial discrimination were compared to depressive symptoms, anxiety, self-esteem, and four domains of aggression using survey data. This paper argues that Demon Slayer: Mugen Train is not merely an animated cinematic phenomenon but a multifaceted narrative that intricately weaves together diverse elements of Japanese cultural heritage. It offers a unique lens through which to examine some of the complexities of Japan's sociocultural and philosophical landscapes and conversely, the impact of these on the film. This thesis explores how Japanese writer Miyazawa Kenji playfully uses opposites and binaries to create thematic richness in his famous children's story Ginga tetsudō no yoru (Night on the Milky Way Railroad). Despite being a children's book, the text works with mature themes such as loneliness, grief, and purpose, themes which are elevated through Kenji's idiosyncratic stylings. Through a close reading of the original Japanese text, the author isolates moments where Kenji conveys his Nichiren Buddhist worldview as part of his proselytizing mission, as well as moments that increase thematic richness, resulting in a multifaceted text that continues …
