My Honors Senior Thesis is centered around the art of Erasure poetics. My definition of Erasure is most concisely stated as: a process of simultaneous poetic addition and subtraction to preexisting text, which results in a product whose creation process ultimately echoes the same revision process that human beings undergo; a process by which a new and beautiful truth is both created and uncovered in a paradoxical manner. Undergraduate Research Conference
Every year the School of Art teams with the English Department to produce a body of work titled Pen and Pigment. I was able to participate in this project through my Typography class with Peter Andrew. Our assignment consisted of two parts. First, we were instructed to produce a poster with a typographic design to exchange with the Creative Writing: Poetry class in the English Department. Second, upon exchange of works, we were given a poem to interpret while using typography as a strong element in our design. The poetry class, in turn, wrote poems based upon our art.

The End of Her is a collection of poetry that centers on ideas of celebrity, nostalgia, pain and healing, and collective memory. The poems depict the lives and times of tragic women: from Eve to Amy Winehouse. The project touches on both the real and the imagined in examining what it means to be famously tragic, as well as what it means to be a spectator of demise. Interwoven autobiographical pieces reveal the relationship between individual memory and shared history, as the collection positions personal accounts of love and loss in conversation with some of the world’s best-known stories.

Charles Bukowksi, one of the most controversial poets of the 20th century, loved very few things- alcohol, sex, his typewriter, and classical music. His poetry is considered down-to-earth and easily relatable, but it is still able to maintain a high level of artistic and literary merit. His skill as an artist becomes clear when his poem “Dostoevsky” is juxtaposed with Caravaggio’s famous painting, “The Sacrifice of Isaac.” This painting depicts an angel stopping Abraham from sacrificing his son, Isaac. My Friend Glenn explores the potential of poetry-as-activism by enacting a poetic discourse between the author and a programmatic simulacrum of Glenn Beck. These paired poems interrogate the role news media play in contemporary political, racial, sexual, religious, and economic discourses.
