El Cuerpo En La Poesía De Mujeres Ecuatorianas, Chloe Hood
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Haifa sun,
Warm and thick like honey,
Melts over everything:
The port, the parasailers, the topless woman sunbathing.
I have befriended the lifeguard,
Whose laughter is abundant like pomegranate seeds.
He wears a red speedo and his curly hair reminds me of pasta. [excerpt]

From their stakeouts below,
Kids are careful not to look directly up,
The way you avoid looking at the sun when you step outside,
Because the sun streams fire and
painted planks spit sand at the little gods of mischief. [excerpt]

The Motions Of Burying, Jessica Poli
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
THE MOTIONS OF BURYING is a thesis comprised of 52 pages of poems and a five page introduction that explores personal connections to physical space and landscape. The poems included in this manuscript are representative of the places I’ve called home: the woods of Pennsylvania, where I grew up; barns and pastures in Central New York, where I spent several years working on small family farms; and the wide sky over Holmes Lake in Lincoln, Nebraska, where I now reside.

Woven is a collection of love poems about people of African descent, all of which feature clothing in some prominent way.
The why of what one wears runs deep. This creative work explores that connection.

Like every other poet, I’ve always been trying to write the poem living inside of me. The poem of myself. So many iterations of this very poem have come about because of my exploration of the greats and because of my exploration of self. The most predominant themes that come up in my thesis are my Cherokee heritage and culture, my family, and my chosen relationships. Interspersed are poems about hardships I, and others, have faced as women. The constant dilemma of womanhood is certainly exacerbated when “woman” is paired with “non-white.” Through my poems, I’ve tried to explore these …
