The Subaltern intends to reach Cal Poly students who do not feel as if their voices are heard and allow them the platform to share their stories. Our focus is on unheard stories from our campus - whether this involves race, class, gender identity, mental health, ethnicity, culture, or any unique part of one’s identity or experience. We hope that these stories will begin to shed light on what we usually consider “taboo” topics and allow students to feel as if they aren’t alone.

This text is a series of 18 creative nonfiction essays that examine France, the author’s many experiences there, and her opinions of French culture and what sets the French apart from Americans. In a lighthearted, sarcastic tone, these first-person essays use narrative, anecdotes, and statistics to study, discuss, and, in some instances, contradict many of the stereotypes about the French. The work follows in the tradition of many other travel writers, such as Mark Twain and David Sedaris, who have used France as their primary subject. "Choking Hazards" is a collection of three short stories and a poem. Identity, whether national or personal relies on a collective imagination formulated from both facts and fiction. Thus, the relationship of truth is equally indebted to history and invention. Zadie Smith’s craft essay, “Fail Better,” recognizes writing as, “the attempted revelation of this elusive, multifaceted self,” (Smith 355). Though we only have our own limited knowledge of the self, we can find other selves through literature. This is the story of belief in a southern Mississippi town and how that belief mirrors the national conservative counterrevolution that took shape at the same time. Hattiesburg’s segregation academy and church school were founded in the context of broader social movements. As the political power of the Citizen’s Council faltered and white moderates’ voices became louder, practical solutions to retain segregation within the boundaries of law grew to be the new focus of white communities.
