Bad Girls of the Bible is a collection of short stories set in the South and dealing with the themes, manners, and ideals of the region. Thematically, the stories are concerned with religion, family, gender, sexuality, and identity, exploring generational gaps and misunderstandings, working from, or beyond, Old South ideals toward New South diversity and progressiveness. Every story features a female narrator or point of view character who is greatly influenced by the Old South/New South dichotomy, the sense of obligation to those people who uphold the past, the momentum toward a better future, and each character's willingness to draw …

The stories in this collection concern the suburban demography as an American landscape, as unique as Manhattan or the West Coast or the Mississippi River or the Arizona desert, with its own lore, mythos, and expectations. These stories attempt to retell those myths and ask why expectations fall short, when they do.
These stories are similar in their exposition and context: male viewpoint characters who live in middle class neighborhoods and communities and spend their days battling anxiety and paranoia and fear and mystery and confusion. From the seat of a bicycle, behind the stage of a lumberjack competition, atop a boatful of oyster shells, and from other unusual perspectives the nonfiction stories in this collection explore a variety of subjects. In some cases I position myself as an outsider, learning through research, interviews and observation. In others I begin as an outsider and then dive in personally, making myself the subject of the experiment. Through it all I hope to make readers, at least temporarily, as interested in online encyclopedias, fixed-wheel bicycles, replica schooners and hungry stingrays as I am.

Welcome to the 2009-2010 edition of The Skunk River Review!
We received a record number of entries this year, making this volume one of the best and most competitive! We even added a new category called Art & Literary Analysis to include a growing number of submissions dedicated to inspiration and critique. The 2010 edition of The Broad River Review was edited by C. V. Davis. The publication contains fiction, non-fiction, art, poetry, and photography. The cover was photographed by Justin Roper. The winner of the J. Calvin Koontz Poetry Award, given annually for a portfolio of poetry to a senior English major, is Nicholas Laughridge. The Broad River Review Editor's Prizes in Fiction and Poetry are chosen among all submissions from Gardner-Webb University students. Cry of the Peacock, Moonlight on the Avenue of Faith, and Caspian Rain are the enticing titles of Gina Bonakdar Nahai’s Iran-focused novels, published in 1991, 1999, and 2008 respectively. And the titles hold true: the narratives reflect the pain, melancholy and dream-like beauty conveyed in the titles as they divulge characters who strive to escape the restrictions of their community, religion, government, and gender. In the meantime, as the author depicts these fantasies of escape and attempts at flight –and frequently harshly punishes them–, the characters achieve a hitherto unknown feat, namely the depiction of Jewish Iranian main characters …
