From 1849 to 1850, Calista Cummings edited and published Akron's first literary magazine, The Akron Offering. At the time, Akron was a booming canal town on the verge of even greater prosperity. By turns religious, comic, romantic, and political, this extraordinary collection of early midwestern creative literature expresses a wide range of sometimes contradictory opinions on both the important questions of its day and the important questions of today: historical events such as the California Gold Rush of 1849 and the 1848 revolutions in Europe are considered alongside more timeless contemplations on truth, justice, and …

Songs For The Nightingale, Michael Cotter

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Ahead lies four rough chapters of a World War I fiction novel I have started earlier this semester as part of an ongoing English Honors Thesis project. The following pages represent an inkling of the research I have undertaken to start this project, but more importantly, they record the beginnings of my continual development in understanding that fiction is truly based around character. Utilizing the elements of craft I have learned from Bridgewater University’s various writing workshops, I submit four individuals that are the product of my imagination and ongoing effort. Fully conscious of the flaws within, I’m still proud …

Lenn never considered herself one of the foreigners in Bangkok. She believed that she was different from her privileged peers at international schools, the posse of multinational corporation workers and the unwitting tourists with a colonial mindset. But when she meets Jon Hayes Wichasak, a wandering luk khrueng, her conviction starts to crumble. She begins to question her motives behind returning to Bangkok and her desire for intimacy. Set on the road that stretches from the Thai-Cambodian border to the Chao Praya River, the novella explores expatriation in the twenty-first century.

The Fast and the Furious

Wednesday night I had received a tip from Eric Altman of the Pennsylvania Bigfoot Society. The report was coming from an area about 2 hours away from me and he couldn’t get to it and asked if I wanted to take it over. I said heck yeah and I called the witness with the number Eric provided.

The witness claimed he was out in the field walking his dogs when the dogs became frightened and bolted back to the house. He saw a large ape-faced beast pacing back and forth just behind the pines that …
