This question of whiteness has pushed me further back ontologically, or deeper down, to include how some people came to be human, and then even further, how some matter came to be living. The novel in draft, “The Collective,” is the result of an eight-month effort, which began in one of Professor Bruce Machart’s writing workshops at Bridgewater State University, spring of 2016. It sat for a couple of years of minor edits and revisions while I waited for the opportunity to once again work with Professor Machart. What follows is the first of four sections of the novel, book one of four if you will. This collection of stories explores the intersection of emotional and physical trauma. In the title story, a rookie EMT relives his brother's death while caring for a young patient who may be permanently paralyzed. "The Rounds at Blanding" follows a military policewoman at a National Guard training base who confronts a strangely determined trespasser as well as painful memories of her son's absentee father. Other stories, such as "Men My Mother Loved," "Watching Mr. Pete," and "Fighting for Faran," consider trauma-as-heritage by asking young protagonists to navigate the loss, wounds, and abuse of their parents. This thesis is a work of fiction. It contains the first fifteen chapters of a novel in-progress. The novel will use five different perspectives to tell the origin story of problematic issues that led to the creation of magical divide between the magical and nonmagical beings. Cursed Connections explores the circumstances that divide families, lovers, and friends while examining the consequences of one putting one’s duty over their loved ones.
