We Built This Kingdom is a collection of short stories which strive to examine the nuances of queer love, lust, connection, aggression, affection, masculinity, and heartache.

My intent is for these pieces to stand alone as short stories, but when read sequentially, the reader should be able to parse a connection between the texts and follow a tether from one to the other.

This collection of short fiction represents a cumulative body of work in partial completion of a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing.

This collection of short stories follows the themes of trauma and the feeling of not being enough for yourself or others. This includes the pressures we put on ourselves to keep trying to be “right” or what we’re “supposed to be”. The idea is apparent that reaching out instead of self- isolating benefits the characters. What also connects these works is a hint of Southern flair, family, and humor. An irreverent voice connects the work and most of the characters. I create conceptual drawings, collages, sculptures, and installations to humorously destabilize and ultimately question how human language, formal methodologies, and social institutions function. While seemingly embracing an aesthetic of rationality, I undermine it with absurdity. In my work, I take a fundamentally dialectical position by skewering the rational to the illogical as neither can exist without the other.

The Dominican Republic is the most travelled-to island in the Caribbean, attracting over 6.6 million travelers per year. However, according to renowned scholar and writer Frank Moya Pons, author of The Dominican Republic: A National History, The Dominican Republic is also “one of the least studied countries in Latin America and the Caribbean despite the fact that it is the longest European-inhabited territory in the hemisphere” (Moya Pons 9). Quand c'est? is an excerpt from a semi-autobiographical novel about a twenty-six-year-old Dominican American woman named Jada, who moves back to suburban New Jersey from Chicago to begin her PhD studies. Regrets cloud Jada’s initial excitement to escape Chicago (which for years has triggered memories of depression, anxiety, academic failure, and isolation) when the difficulties of cohabitating with her single mother, Altagracia, start to accumulate. Running parallel to Jada’s academic journey is an exploration of approaching bereavement. A few weeks prior to Jada's arrival, her grandfather, Domingo, began losing weight and having trouble breathing, eating, and sleeping. Jada must learn …

Bloom, and Anne Whitehead, All Things Considered details the painful past and pensive present of Evan and Darcey, two 30-somethings trying desperately to conceal their divorce from Evan’s parents during a holiday trip home. Separated into 10 chapters, this coming-of-age novella delves into the lives of the two main characters, Evan and Darcey, as well as supporting characters, Evan’s family - Mom, Dad, Chase, and the already-deceased Ashleigh. Spring has arrived and flowers begin to awaken from their winter sleep. A rose bush thinks herself better than all the other flowers. A human woman comes to tend the garden regularly and the rose bush enjoys her presence. However, once the rose bush dazzles everyone with her newly boomed roses, the human woman returns and takes them. Devastated the rose bush finds comfort and friendship in the flowers she used to look down to. In the end the rose bush perks up and tries again at growing the perfect rose.

And a battle for life, souls, and power ensues. With an ending that leaves you wanting more.
