In its third season, the Contrada Agnese Project (CAP) continued archaeological investigations in the remains of a building, located near the western margins of the ancient urban center of Morgantina. In 2015, excavations opened a larger portion of the so-called Southeast Building, extending from the trenches opened during the 2014 season. These investigations yielded evidence from construction trenches and sub-floor fills that now allow a preliminary dating of the building’s phases. The building appears to have had a short life, having been built and abandoned within fewer than 75 years, beginning around the middle of the third century BCE. New …

Identity Through Discourse: Narrative Technique In The Epistula Severi, Mark Pearsall

This article analyzes the Epistula Severi, a fifth-century letter which describes the coercive conversion of Jews on the island of Minorca. Approaching the text on the level of narrative and rhetoric, rather than history alone, it argues that the letter’s framing and historical account serve to promote a discourse of binary opposition between Jews and Christians. In his presentation of the events, the letter’s author obscures Christian agency in anti-Jewish violence and argues for divine sanction of violent conversions. The historical dimension of the letter’s discourse is considered along with that of its content.

This paper is primarily a presentation of two recently excavated rooms in the 6th c. Episcopal Basili-ca at the site of Golemo Gradište, village of Konjuh. The location and furnishings of the spaces raise the possibility that they were used for the deposition of offerings, such as bread and wine for the Eucharist, by members of the congregation as they entered the church. Gifts of bread and wine immediately move the discussion into issues of liturgy. Death was a part of life, perhaps a frequent and highly visible aspect of daily life in a Late Antique town such as the anonymous city at Golemo Gradiste, village of Konjuh. The residents went about their daily activities of farming, crafts, food preparation, textile production, mining, and metallurgy The several skeletons found within the city, i.e., two children probably killed by falling debris and several cist burials on the northern terrace, indicate that death was frequent and familiar: for the residents of the city the threat of violent and unexpected death was always present.

Lycophron’S Alexandra: “Restaging” The East-West Conflict, Akira V. Yatsuhashi

This paper argues that Lycrophon’s Alexandra overwrites the model of Herodotus to condense the conflict between East and West and advocate for uniformly “Greek” cultural identity. As the idea of what it meant to be Greek or barbarian began to transform with the events of the early Hellenistic period, concurrent literary works like those of Lycrophon responded to cultural anxieties by redefining Hellenicity to unite displaced Greek-speaking peoples. Herodotus and Lycrophon both claim epistemological authority of their narratives, but unlike Herodotus, Lycrophon explores the individual motivations of historical actors and incorporates both poetic and prose traditions into his narrative. Hesiod’s Theogony provides one of the most widely authoritative accounts of the origin of the cosmos, but his account has always been challenged by rivals claiming to be older, wiser, and better, and the name of Orpheus has always been privileged in the evidence for ancient rivals to Hesiod. The Orphic accounts play their variations on the Hesiodic themes, riffing in different ways on the idea of the ultimate origin of the cosmos; the processes of reproduction by which subsequent entities were generated; the conflicts between these divinities that created the changes from the original state to the current one; …
