In Memoriam: David Elwell Maxwell, John C. Cooper

Florida Historical Quarterly

David Elwell Maxwell was born in the city of Tallahassee, Florida, February 25th, 1843. He was the son of William M. and Rebecca F. Maxwell. His father came to Florida from Georgia, when the former was a territory. He was educated in or near Tallahassee, until 1857, when he attended school in Cambridge, Massachusetts until 1860.

These antiquities embrace at the present time, the “Spanish Mission,” the “Old Fort” and the “Rock House,” the latter within the last few years having been destroyed by the removal of the shell mound on which it was built, for road making purposes.
