Notes On Reconstrucion In Tallahassee And Leon County, 1866-1876, Florida Historical Society 2020 University of Central Florida

Notes On Reconstrucion In Tallahassee And Leon County, 1866-1876, Florida Historical Society

Florida Historical Quarterly

The soldiers who came back in 1865 found peace and security at least, and for a time there was business activity in Tallahassee. The nightmare of Reconstruction did not begin at once - not until the United States Army took the reins of government, and that other army of carpet-baggers and camp-followers came from everywhere like buzzards collecting.

Fort King, Frederick Cubberly 2020 University of Central Florida

Fort King, Frederick Cubberly

Florida Historical Quarterly

Unmarked and almost forgotten the site of Fort King, one of the historic spots of Florida, is to be found three miles east of Ocala. Established about one hundred years ago, the place was for many years the center of affairs concerning the Florida Indians. For many months during the year 1835 news from Fort King was anxiously awaited in Washington by the Administration and to this point the President of the United States and his Secretary of War dispatched many messages, or talks as the Indians described them; and from Fort King came back the reports from the Indian …

The Dade Massacre, Albert Hubbard Roberts 2020 University of Central Florida

The Dade Massacre, Albert Hubbard Roberts

Florida Historical Quarterly

One who would write again of the Dade massacre, ninety-one years after its occurrence, must forego the expectation of discovering any great wealth of original data, and content himself in the main with the assembling of facts already published, and the elimination of more or less doubtful detail that has crept into former narratives, in an effort to bring into stronger relief a more or less neglected story of the American soldier’s courage and fidelity unto death. Every school-child has been taught the story of the Alamo, a tragedy enacted a scarce two months after the massacre of the Dade …

Henry Perrine, Pioneer Botanist And Horticulturist, Sarah R. W. Palmer 2020 University of Central Florida

Henry Perrine, Pioneer Botanist And Horticulturist, Sarah R. W. Palmer

Florida Historical Quarterly

In the July issue last, there appeared a hitherto unpublished diary, of Mrs. Hester Perrine Walker, a survivor of the Indian massacre at Indian Key, on August 7, 1840, in which her father, the noted pioneer and botanist, lost his life. This volume of reminiscences, so intensely interesting in its depiction of the daily vicissitudes of pioneer life, graphically climaxed by the tragic occurrence of the massacre, has aroused among its readers a desire for further knowledge of the lifework of this pioneer horticulturist of Florida. Mrs. Sarah R. W. Palmer, of Miami, a grand-daughter of Dr. Perrine, tells of …

The article was entitled THE FIRST SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR. The following paper is a resume by the same author of an analogous incident in Florida history - the raid into Florida in the year 1818 by General Andrew Jackson.

John Quincy Adams And Florida, Frederick Cubberly 2020 University of Central Florida

John Quincy Adams And Florida, Frederick Cubberly

Florida Historical Quarterly

It has been said that the defiant patriotism of John Quincy Adams secured to the United States possession of Florida. It settled, after years of controversy, the long standing differences between Spain and this country. The student of history who takes the trouble to search for details of the many transactions and negotiations that resulted in the Florida provinces coming under the American flag will find that the skillful diplomacy of Adams resulted in settling for all time the sovereignty of Spain on the North American Continent.

Address Of John C. Mcgehee Before The Southern Rights Association Of Madison County, June 7, 1851, John C. McGehee 2020 University of Central Florida

Address Of John C. Mcgehee Before The Southern Rights Association Of Madison County, June 7, 1851, John C. Mcgehee

Florida Historical Quarterly

The high historical importance of this address lies in that ten years later John C. McGehee was elected (by a vote of five to one over several worthy opponents) president of the convention of the people of Florida, convened January 3, 1861, which passed the ordinance of secession. At such a time of stress and strong feeling it would seem that a man must be elected to that position at least as much because of his known opinions and long-held beliefs as for his ability and all other reasons.

Realizing the importance of such a movement, the Florida Historical Society has approved this plan and has helped to make it a success.

Massacre At Indian Key, August 7, 1840 And The Death Of Doctor Henry Perrine, Hester Perrine Walker 2020 University of Central Florida

Massacre At Indian Key, August 7, 1840 And The Death Of Doctor Henry Perrine, Hester Perrine Walker

Florida Historical Quarterly

While at Campeachy, (1827-1838), where he served as United States consul, Dr. Henry Perrine, a native of New York City and a physician and botanist, determined to devote the remainder of his life to introducing and endeavoring to acclimatize useful tropical plants in semi-tropical Florida. He studied the matter and made collections of plants and seeds. The United States Congress, by an act approved July 7, 1898, made a conditional grant to Dr. Perrine and his associates of a township of land in South Florida, to be selected by him; the Senate Committee on Agriculture having reported “. . . …
