Thomas Campbell To Lord Deane Gordon: An Account Of The Creek Indian Nation, 1764, Thomas Campbell
Florida Historical Quarterly
The original of this letter is preserved by Sir Arthur Grant of Monymusk, Scotland; to whom, and to Mr. George Cole Scott of the Virginia Historical Society, grateful acknowledgment is made for copies of this and other documents relating to British Florida. The rarity of extant letters of this period and territory adds to its already high value as source historical material.

Florida Historical Quarterly
In 1811, when war clouds between the United States and Great Britain were gathering, the United States sent commissioners to Spanish Florida seeking a temporary cession to prevent its occupancy by the British in case of war. As might be expected Spain would not consent to such an arrangement, whereupon General George Mathews, representing the United States government in this negotiation, devised a plan to bring about a cession through the medium of a revolution of the inhabitants of East Florida, who would be assisted by residents of Georgia and by the regular armed forces of the United States. Such …

John Forbes & Co. Vs. The Chickasaw Nation A Journal Of An Indian Talk, 1805, Heloise H. Cruzat
Florida Historical Quarterly
The original manuscript of this journal is preserved by Mrs. Heloise H. Cruzat of New Orleans, a descendant of John Innerarity of Pensacola, the last surviving partner of Panton, Leslie & Co. and its successor John Forbes & Co. Mrs. Cruzat has long been at work on the mass of colonial documents of Louisiana in the Cabildo at New Orleans, especially in abstracting and translating an Index to the Records of the Superior Council; this work, which is a synopsis of the records, is appearing continuously in The Louisiana Historical Quarterly. With the same skill she has transcribed this journal, …

Letter Of Marcus C. Stephens (Quincy, Florida, 1835), Marcus Cicero Stephens
Florida Historical Quarterly
The writer of the above letter was Marcus Cicero Stephens of Newbern, North Carolina. During the early years of territorial Florida, many settlers came to the region from the Carolinas and Virginia, due, partly, to the desire to establish pioneer plantations as speculative ventures and, partly, to the need of expansion to take care of the surplus slave property. Stephens was apparently a member of this group. His family was well connected, as his mother was the niece of Commodore James Barron of the “Chesapeake” fame. The plantation which was being established was located near Quincy, Florida ; and here …

Notes On The Life Of James Grant Prior And Subsequent To His Governorship Of East Florida, Philip C. Tucker
Florida Historical Quarterly
To the general reader of Florida history, James Grant is but governor of British East Florida. Had the country remained English for a few more decades, it might well have been that those seven years held the most important service of his long public life; for during that time he laid, in a wilderness, the sound foundation of a typical British colony. But as that beginning came to naught; his governorship is only the midpoint of a military career which began in 1741 as an ensign and carried him to the rank of general in 1796.

Documents Relating To El Destino And Chemonie Plantations, Middle Florida, 1828-1874. Part Iv, Kathryn T. Abbey
Florida Historical Quarterly
The record of El Destino and Chemonie plantations cannot be brought to a close without some account of the changes wrought there by the ravages of the War for Southern Independence, no matter how meager that account has to be. And meager it is. Beyond a few letters, some broken statistical memoranda jotted down by George Noble Jones, and a score or more bits of paper strewn about the El Destino attic, there is nothing. It is with the fullest realization of this circumstance and the resulting limitation of the picture of the plantations that the following narrative is presented.

Key West And Salvage In 1850, John C. Hoyt
Florida Historical Quarterly
From the beginning there was wide difference of opinion and sharp controversy in regard to wrecking, the principal occupation of the people of a town which for a time was the largest in Florida. The nature of the business (for it came to be an extensive and well-regulated business) and human nature rendered any agreement between owner and salvor difficult if not impossible; hence, after 1828, every case was automatically taken before the district court which was established at Key West in that year almost wholly for the adjudication of these admiralty cases, and owners and masters of the wrecking …

One of the most interesting as well as the most elusive aspects of El Destino life was the mill plant. A few years after George Noble Jones came into possession of his Florida holdings, he undertook to establish his own mills. The facilities for the project were near at hand, for the plantation was heavily wooded and water-power was available from Burnt Mill Creek and the St. Marks River, both of which flowed through his property. By 1850 the enterprise had been started ; it consisted of a dam, of somewhat imposing size for its day and locality, and a …
