Kekalahan Cambodia People’S Party Di Wilayah Urban Kamboja Pada Pemilu Tahun 2013, Farizan Fajari

Jurnal Politik

Cambodia is one of the countries that implements electoral authoritarianism system. This condition is misused by the ruling party, the Cambodia People’s Party or CPP, as the means to dominate the parliament until the 2008 election. However, the political party power distribution in Cambodia has undergone drastical change in the 2013 election. In this election, the CPP seats decreased significantly, which was the worst result for CPP since the 1998 election. The decrease was mainly caused by the failure of CPP to enchant the voters in four urban areas with high proportion of seats in parliament: Kampong Cham, Pnom Penh, …

Spatial Clustering And Ecological Crowding Of Valley Oak (Quercus Lobata, Née) Associated With Shifts In Recruitment Establishment Sites In Southern California, James J. Hayes, Shannon Donnelly

Geography and Geology Faculty Publications

Premise of research. Valley oak (Quercus lobata, Née) has received much attention due to concerns about regeneration failure and, more recently, compositional and structural community changes associated with this foundation species. Changes in the structure and spatial distribution of valley oak stands, as examined in this article, are likely affecting ecological processes and interactions throughout communities where it is found.

Methodology. We used quadrat-based methods of spatial analysis, Morisita’s index of aggregation (IM), and a derived index (IMr ) to examine patterns of clustering, intensity of crowding, and changes in the probability of crowding as the definition of crowding (stems/area) …

Pengaruh Institusi Regional Terhadap Konvergensi Kebijakan Antarnegara: Studi Kasus Asean Open Skies, Dea Malinda Azalia 2017 DPR RI

Pengaruh Institusi Regional Terhadap Konvergensi Kebijakan Antarnegara: Studi Kasus Asean Open Skies, Dea Malinda Azalia

Jurnal Politik

This article analyzes the effect of regional economic integration on cross-national policy through the ASEAN Open Skies treaty, particularly in Indonesia, Philippines, and Singapore. This qualitative research applies the concepts of intergovernmentalist-supranationalist regional institution and causal-mechanism that lead to cross-national policy convergence. I argue that ASEAN regionalism as an intergovernmentalist institution affects the process of policymaking, the implementation of ASEAN Open Skies in the regional level, and the adoption of it in the domestic level. The process of international harmonization and transnational communication (transnational problem solving) during the arrangement of the air transport cooperation frameworks in ASEAN has made the …

Local Immigration Enforcement Entrepreneurship In The Punishment Marketplace, Daniel L. Stageman 2017 The Graduate Center, City University of New York

Local Immigration Enforcement Entrepreneurship In The Punishment Marketplace, Daniel L. Stageman

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The contemporary neoliberal economic order plays a significant role in American social organization and policy-making. Most importantly, neoliberal ideology drives the creation and imposition of markets in public goods and services and the valorization of free market ideology in cultural life. The neoliberal ‘project of inequality’ is in turn delimited and upheld by an authoritarian system of punishment built around mass incarceration, surveillance, and an unprecedented level of social control directed at the lowest strata of American society – a group that includes both the urban underclass, and unauthorized immigrants.

This study lays out the theory of the punishment marketplace …

Land Change History Of Oil Palm Plantations In Northern Bengkulu Province, Sumatra Island, Reconstructed From Landsat Satellite Archives, Atsushi Tomita

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The aim of this study is to reconstruct the history of land conversion to oil palm plantation in tropical Asia using multi-temporal satellite data. A new method was constructed with a newly developed computer model, Land Change Detection and Land Definition Model (LC/LD Model) to map out spatio-temporal distribution of land changes. A comprehensive, cloud-free Landsat dataset was created from all the available Landsat data from 1988 to 2015. The pixel-based dataset was converted into a polygon-based dataset by applying the multi-temporal image segmentation method. The representation of the spectral information was also reduced to a single index of IB45, …

Towards Peaceful Islam: Jemaat Ahmadiyah Indonesia (Jai) As A New Social Movement, Nuurul Fajari Fadhillah

Masyarakat, Jurnal Sosiologi

The Ahmadiyya religious group has been present in Indonesia since the 1920s. The reli- gious group is divided into two different subgroups, namely Gerakan Ahmadiyah Indone- sia (GAI) and Jemaat Ahmadiyah Indonesia (JAI). In the reform era, the JAI community has to face a less favorable situation. The Heresy Fatwa issued by Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI) in 1980 had put this group into an even more difficult position. The reform era government seemed to give a greater opportunity for anti-Ahmadiyya dominant Islamic groups to commit violence towards this group. JAI communities in various areas expe- rienced various forms of discrimination …

Nowadays, technological innovations and sciences have reached the stage of modification and improvement of the capacity of the human body. This technology varies from prosthetic devices, implants, plastic surgery, drugs, genetic engineering, nanotechnology, and others. Several previous studies have shown that the advancement of this technological intervention has created a consumer culture of human enhancement products and services, for instance, non-therapeutic drugs. However, previous discussions about human enhancement products and services failed to provide further explanation on morphological freedom from the perspective of consumer culture. Morphological freedom is an individual right to modify or otherwise, refuse to modify one’s physical …

The Tension Between Religion And Democracy, B. Herry-Priyono

Masyarakat, Jurnal Sosiologi

The growing revival of religious sentiments in the past few decades exposes serious faults in the explanatory power of the so-called modernization theories, urging social scien- tists to seek new avenues in understanding the phenomena. The article focuses on the way the present character of religious fundamentalism needs to be understood not as a form of traditionalism but as one of the springboard effects inseparable from hybrid modernity. In particular, it highlights the tension between religious fundamentalism and democracy as revolving around at least two points. One is the antinomy between diver- sity as the sine-qua-non of democracy and the …

Effects Of Spatially Distributed Stream Power On Check Dam Function In Small Upland Watersheds: A Case Study Of The Upper Laja Watershed, Guanajuato, Mexico, Zachary Andrew Herzfeld

Dissertations and Theses

Watershed restoration comes in a variety of forms depending on which set of problems are sought to be remedied. Severe soil erosion, in the form of gullying and/or headcutting, can be mitigated through constructing check dams in well-selected locations. This practice has been used throughout the upland subwatersheds within the Upper Laja River watershed in Guanajuato, México. The present study employed Wolman pebble counts to systematically assess the effectiveness of 21 check dams located near the city of San Miguel de Allende. Particle size distributions taken directly downstream and upstream of each check dam were differentiated, aggregated and compared--with the …

U.S.-China Economic And Security Review Commission: Emerging Factor In Western Pacific Strategic Policy Analysis, Bert Chapman

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

Those studying and analyzing Western Pacific strategic trends and develop- ments have access to multiple unclassified analyses of security trends in this region covering these waters and adjacent countries. These information resources are produced by military and government agencies from multiple countries, multinational public policy research institutions, popular and scholarly journals, and Internet resources featuring text, data, webcasts, and imagery. One of these resources is the U.S.–China Economic and Security Review Commission established in the 2001 National Defense Authorization Act. This article argues that this organization’s analyses should be considered essential reading by civilian and military policymakers and individuals and …

Spring Temperature Variability Over Turkey Since 1800 Ce Reconstructed From A Broad Network Of Tree-Ring Data, Nesibe Köse, H. Tuncay Güner, Grant L. Harley, Joel Guiot

Faculty Publications

The meteorological observational period in Turkey, which starts ca. 1930 CE, is too short for understanding long-term climatic variability. Tree rings have been used intensively as proxy records to understand summer precipitation history of the region, primarily because they have a dominant precipitation signal. Yet, the historical context of temperature variability is unclear. Here, we used higher-order principle components of a network of 23 tree-ring chronologies to provide a high-resolution spring (March–April) temperature reconstruction over Turkey during the period 1800– 2002. The reconstruction model accounted for 67 % (Adj. R 2 = 0.64, p < 0.0001) of the instrumental temperature variance over the full calibration period (1930–2002). The reconstruction is punctuated by a temperature increase during the 20th century; yet extreme cold and warm events during the 19th century seem to eclipse conditions during the 20th century. We found significant correlations between our March–April spring temperature reconstruction and existing gridded spring temperature reconstructions for Europe over Turkey and southeastern Europe. Moreover, the precipitation signal obtained from the tree-ring network (first principle component) showed highly significant correlations with gridded summer drought index reconstruction over Turkey and Mediterranean countries. Our results showed that, beside the dominant precipitation signal, a temperature signal can be extracted from tree-ring series and they can be useful proxies in reconstructing past temperature variability.

Out In "The Numbers": Youth And Gang Violence Initiatives And Uneven Development In Portland's Periphery, Dirk Kinsey

Dissertations and Theses

Incidence of youth and gang violence in the Portland, Oregon metro area has increased dramatically over the past five years. This violence has recently become more spatially diffuse, shifting outwards from gentrified, inner city neighborhoods, towards the city's periphery. These incidents exist within the context of a shifting regional political economy, characterized by a process of gentrification associated displacement and growing, and distinctly racialized and spatialized, inequalities. While gang researchers have long argued a corollary between the emergence of gangs and economically and culturally polarized urban landscapes, the ongoing suburbanization of poverty in American cities suggests a new landscape of …
