The Living Cities Integration Initiative (TII) began in 2011 as a three-year program to accelerate local initiatives promoting greater economic inclusion in five cities across the country. In Cleveland, Ohio, the TII was known as the Greater University Circle (GUC) Community Wealth Building Initiative and was part of the more comprehensive Greater University Circle Initiative (GUCI) between 2011 and 2013. The GUCI began in 2005 and will continue beyond TII. This report will refer to the three-year Living Cities program as the GUCI/TII. The Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station Study: A Socio-Economic Analysis And Closure Transition Guide Book, Jonathan Cooper
The Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station Study: A Socio-Economic Analysis And Closure Transition Guide Book, Jonathan Cooper
Jonathan G. Cooper
This Guide Book estimates the socioeconomic impacts of the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station (“Pilgrim Station”) on the Town of Plymouth, the Old Colony Planning Council (OCPC), and neighboring cities and towns. It does not endorse any perspective for or against nuclear power, focusing only on the impacts of Pilgrim Station’s operations and the impacts of decommissioning should it occur. The plant’s direct impacts are identified first, followed by estimates of secondary impacts that come from the business and household spending caused by Pilgrim Station’s expenditures. The Guide Book then estimates the impacts Pilgrim Station’s closure would have on Plymouth and …

Theorising The ‘Fifth Migration’ In The United States: Understanding Lifestyle Migration From An Integrated Approach, Brian Hoey
Brian A. Hoey, Ph.D.
This chapter is an empirically-informed discussion of relevant social theory for examining the phenomenon of lifestyle migration in the United States in both rural and urban settings. Specifically, the chapter explores key explanatory models born of research into so-called non-economic migration occurring since the early twentieth century—models that may be characterized as primarily either production or consumption oriented in their emphasis—as a context for outlining an integrated approach. The author then highlights changes in how some Americans appear to calculate personal and collective quality of life as engendered by an emerging economic order—based on principles of flexibility and contingency—whose affects …

University Community Partnerships, Jonathan G. Cooper, Zeenat Kotval-K, Zenia Kotval, John R. Mullin
Jonathan G. Cooper
University-Community Partnerships have been recognized as a valuable contribution to both the academic community and our cities and towns. In the words of Henry Cisneros, former U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Design secretary, “The long-term futures of both the city and the university in this country are so intertwined that one cannot—or perhaps will not—survive without the other.” Increasingly, colleges and universities are bringing their time, energy and resources to bear on local problems. They are using their other physical, financial and intellectual capital to facilitate economic development, provide social services, technical assistance and create opportunities for applied research.

This study describes the impact of GRC on the State of Ohio and on Northeast Ohio, where GRC is located. Northeast Ohio includes the eight counties in the Akron and Cleveland metropolitan areas.1 This report is an expansion and update of an earlier study, published in February 1996.2 As before, this study employs two methods to determine GRC’s influence on the state and local economies. The first method uses quantitative models to estimate the effect of GRC on the studied economies. These models measure economic impact in terms of growth in total output, household earnings, and number of new jobs …

While economic development programs are difficult to evaluate, the literature reveals important information about the level of success achieved by various programs. It also demonstrates how positive results can be realized. A “what works” matrix follows the review of the evaluation studies. The matrix highlights the significant findings and key lessons that can be learned from this work.
