The Mabinti Tushike Hatamu (Girls let’s be leaders!) program is designed to test and evaluate strategies for reducing the vulnerability of out-of-school adolescent girls in Tanzania aged 10–19 years to HIV/AIDS, pregnancy, and unfavorable life outcomes. MTH is led by the Tanzania AIDS Commission, implemented by Restless Development, and supported by UNICEF. The Population Council developed a strategy for Restless Development to capture the richness of its activities. The Council designed a training session and a companion toolkit in participatory action research for community volunteers, aged 19–23 years, to use within their girl groups. The provision of any new prevention product in clinical trial settings is often vastly different from implementation in “real life” public sector settings. In addition, use of antiretrovirals (ARV), such as tenofovir gel, for pre-exposure prophylaxis requires regular HIV testing to ensure users are uninfected before initiating and continuing product use. Therefore, before any ARV-based prevention product can be introduced to women, information is needed on HIV testing practices, how best to integrate products into existing primary health care systems, and women’s risk perception and health-seeking behaviors. Link Up is a global consortium of international and local nongovernmental organizations led by the International HIV/AIDS Alliance. Link Up aimed to improve the sexual and reproductive health and rights of young people in Bangladesh, Burundi, Ethiopia, Myanmar, and Uganda who are living with HIV or are affected by the HIV pandemic. Consortium members PIACT Bangladesh and Marie Stopes Bangladesh implemented a brothel-based program for female sex workers to address sexual and reproductive health and rights. The Respectful Maternity Care (RMC) Resource Package was developed by the Heshima project as part of the USAID Translating Research into Action (TRAction) project. The resource package is designed to be used by program managers, supervisors, trainers, technical advisors, and others who organize or facilitate RMC training workshops on sexual and reproductive health as well as skills training in emergency obstetric and newborn care. The resource package provides experienced facilitators with background information, materials, instructions, and tips for promoting respectful care in reproductive, maternal, and newborn health services in both facilities and communities. The majority of contraceptive services in Nigeria are offered in private settings, including Patent Medicine (PM) shops. PM shops are informal businesses owned by Patent Medicine Vendors (PMVs) licensed to sell patent or proprietary drugs. Injectable contraception is the most popular modern contraceptive method in Nigeria. However PMVs are not regulated to sell or administer injectable contraceptives because the businesses do not receive formal training. Despite this, some PMVs are selling and administering injectable methods in response to high demand. In sub-Saharan Africa, there is a high rate of unintended pregnancy, particularly among HIV-positive women, and the majority of HIV infections are sexually transmitted or transmitted as a result of pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding. Yet many health facilities do not provide integrated HIV and SRH services. Integration has the potential to increase access and uptake of health services, increase job satisfaction among providers, more effectively distribute facility workloads, and reduce facility costs. Postpartum family planning is a major component of postpartum care services. The Population Council is working to introduce an additional method of contraception in Nigeria—the Progesterone Contraceptive Vaginal Ring (PCVR). The PCVR is administered vaginally but acts systemically to inhibit ovulation. The PCVR contains natural progesterone and is meant for breastfeeding women to augment lactational amenorrhea. As the Council conducts a series of activities as a prelude to eventual introduction of the PCVR in sub-Saharan Africa, including Nigeria, the detailed evaluation of the postpartum program environment is very important. The Population Council’s Ending Eclampsia project seeks to expand access to proven, underutilized interventions and commodities for the prevention, early detection, and treatment of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia (PE/E) and to strengthen global partnerships. Ending Eclampsia is working in Nigeria and Bangladesh to assess the level of program activities, gaps, and challenges around prevention and treatment of PE/E and magnesium sulfate (MgSO4). The project will build upon this landscape analysis to expand services to detect and manage PE/E, develop and support implementation of strategic plans for replicating the intervention package, and increase global PE/E evidence shared through knowledge and learning platforms. …

Caring for the Carers is an activity aimed at reducing work-related stress—a major driver of disrespect and abuse (D&A) during facility-based childbirth. Pregnancy, labor, and delivery are expected to be joyous moments for the mother, her family, and the service providers. However, this is not always the case due to maternal complications or even death. Maternity units often have high workloads. At the request of the Packard Foundation, the Population Council organized a meeting at its office in Washington, DC, on December 16, 2014, to establish links with key stakeholders interested in quality of care, and to refocus attention on challenges in measuring and monitoring diverse dimensions of quality of care.
