Private Versus Public Juvenile Correctional Facilities: Do Differences In Environmental Quality Exist?, Gaylene Armstrong, Doris Layton Mackenzie Oct 2003

Private Versus Public Juvenile Correctional Facilities: Do Differences In Environmental Quality Exist?, Gaylene Armstrong, Doris Layton Mackenzie

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Expansion in the operation of private sector correctional facilities has sparked a number of debates. A primary concern is that environmental quality for offenders incarcerated in privately operated facilities will be poorer than publicly operated facilities due to the profit motivation of the private sector. This study examined data collected from 48 residential juvenile correctional facilities in 19 states (16 private and 32 public facilities). Self-report surveys, including cognitive assessments of 13 conditions of confinement, were administered to juvenile delinquents (N = 4,121) incarcerated in these facilities. Data from facility records were also incorporated in the analysis. A hierarchical …

Hiding In Plain Sight: A Practical Guide To Identifying Victims Of Trafficking In The U.S., Donna M. Hughes Dr. Sep 2003

Hiding In Plain Sight: A Practical Guide To Identifying Victims Of Trafficking In The U.S., Donna M. Hughes Dr.

Donna M. Hughes

This practical guide focuses on identifying victims of sexual trafficking, meaning they have been trafficked for commercial sex acts, such as prostitution or other forms of sexual exploitation, such as stripping, lap dancing, or production of pornography. Although there are commonalities between victims of sexual and labor trafficking, there are sufficient differences to require separate focus. Therefore, this guide does not describe ways to identify victims who have been trafficked for forced labor, such as domestic servants and sweat shop or migrant farm workers.

Taking On The Unknown: A Qualitative Comparative Analysis Of Unknown Relationship Homicides, Wendy C. Regoeczi, Terance D. Miethe Aug 2003

Taking On The Unknown: A Qualitative Comparative Analysis Of Unknown Relationship Homicides, Wendy C. Regoeczi, Terance D. Miethe

Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications

Aside from noting the dramatic rise in their numbers, homicides with unknown victim/offender relationships have attracted little research attention. This study uses Qualitative Comparative Analysis and data from the Supplementary Homicide Reports for 1976 through 1998 to examine the nature of unknown relationship homicides and changes in their structure over time. The findings indicate that a large number of unknown relationship cases are contained within a few prevalent homicide situations while also occurring in a diverse array of less common situations. The situational context of unknown homicides exhibits considerable change over time, shifting from the killing of older White males …

An Exploration Of Automobile Insurance Fraud, Robyn Lincoln, Helene Wells, Wayne Petherick Jun 2003

An Exploration Of Automobile Insurance Fraud, Robyn Lincoln, Helene Wells, Wayne Petherick

Wayne Petherick

This exploratory study analyses claiming behaviour within the automobile insurance industry. A local insurance company provided 32 automobile insurance claims thus permitting qualitative and quantitative analysis. This study enunciates non-fraudulent claiming behaviour as the sample included only a low number of suspected fraud cases. Variables contained within each of the claim files were analysed, as were the statements of the insured individuals. Each claimant is required to provide two written statements to the local insurance company and these statements were analysed for consistency and detail.

The overall findings revealed that claimants were generally employed, middle-aged males who were sober at …

The Application Of Missing Data Estimation Models To The Problem Of Unknown Victim/Offender Relationships In Homicide Cases., Wendy C. Regoeczi, Marc Riedel Jun 2003

The Application Of Missing Data Estimation Models To The Problem Of Unknown Victim/Offender Relationships In Homicide Cases., Wendy C. Regoeczi, Marc Riedel

Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications

Homicide cases suffer from substantial levels of missing data, a problem largely ignored by criminological researchers. The present research seeks to address this problem by imputing values for unknown victim/offender relationships using the EM algorithm. The analysis is carried out first using homicide data from the Los Angeles Police Department (1994-1998), and then compared with imputations using homicide data for Chicago (1991-1995), using a variety of predictor variables to assess the extent to which they influence the assignment of cases to the various relationship categories. The findings indicate that, contrary to popular belief, many of the unknown cases likely involve …

The State Of Domestic Violence Protective Orders In Hidalgo County, Texas, Cindy Noel Berner Jun 2003

The State Of Domestic Violence Protective Orders In Hidalgo County, Texas, Cindy Noel Berner

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Domestic violence has long been an issue for the criminal justice system and society. Despite decades of research, activism, and intervention programs, much remains to be accomplished. There are many facets to studying domestic violence. However, there are few studies that specifically deal with protective orders and what, if any, effect they have on the occurrence of domestic violence. The goal of this researcher was to discover whether there were any relationships between variables such as age, gender, and employment status and the decision to not issue a protective order. The data used in this study were obtained from the …

International Drug Trafficking: Police Corruption On The Us/Mexico Border, John Jacob Rodriguez May 2003

International Drug Trafficking: Police Corruption On The Us/Mexico Border, John Jacob Rodriguez

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The purpose of this thesis was to examine contemporary extralegal factors for the causation of drug-specific police corruption, particularly drug trafficking on the US/Mexico Border. Police included only those officers who were commissioned by municipalities. The researcher focused on a particular geographical area of the US border region consisting of a quad-county area, which includes Willacy, Starr, Hidalgo, and Cameron Counties. This region was ideal for its unique demographic composition and location. This is qualitative research based on grounded theory, which consisted of purposive and snowball sampling. There was no hypothesis due to the inductive nature of this research. The …

The Color Of Crime: The Case Against Race-Based Suspect Descriptions, Bela August Walker Apr 2003

The Color Of Crime: The Case Against Race-Based Suspect Descriptions, Bela August Walker

Bela August Walker

Law enforcement in the United States relies on racial identifiers as a crucial part of suspect descriptions. Unlike racial profiling, this practice is regarded as both an essential tool for law enforcement and as an unproblematic use of race. However, given the racial history of the United States, such descriptors, particularly “Black,” have developed in such a way to create an extremely large and unreliable category. Due to these factors, the use of race as a physical descriptor in suspect decisions is both discriminatory and inefficient. Employing race as an identifying characteristic allows law enforcement officers broad discretionary powers that …

An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Exposure To Risk, Gender, And Delinquency: An Exploratory Case Study, Rosanne D. Walters

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Management

This case study explored the interactive relationship between the type and level of risk experienced by males and females entering the Norfolk Juvenile Detention Home in 2000, differences in delinquent behaviors of males and females, and differences in responses to that behavior. The study was an outgrowth of a previous report to the Norfolk Juvenile Detention Home Utilization Task Force suggesting that females experienced a higher level of risk than males and that they were detained for lesser offenses. The study also was motivated by data from the Office on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention indicating that there had been …

It Does Take A Village To Raise A Child, Rebecca J. Boyd Apr 2003

It Does Take A Village To Raise A Child, Rebecca J. Boyd

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

Utilizing Cullen's (1994) Social Support Theory and Hunter's (1985) three dimensions of social life, this study is a quantitative, cross-sectional secondary data analysis designed to examine the relationship between institutional social support and rates of juvenile crime for counties and cities in Virginia for the year 2000. Resting on the contention that an inverse, significant relationship exists between measures of institutional support and rates of juvenile property and violent crime, this study examines types of support provided by the institutions of family, school, and the government. These measures of institutional support include 1) familial support: median income, marriage support; 2) …

Killing For The State: The Darkest Side Of American Nursing, Dave Holmes, Cary H. Federman Mar 2003

Killing For The State: The Darkest Side Of American Nursing, Dave Holmes, Cary H. Federman

Department of Justice Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The aim of this article is to bring to the attention of the international nursing community the discrepancy between a pervasive ‘caring’ nursing discourse and the most unethical nursing practice in the United States. In this article, we present a duality: the conflict in American prisons between nursing ethics and the killing machinery. The US penal system is a setting in which trained healthcare personnel practices the extermination of life. We look upon the sanitization of death work as an application of healthcare professionals’ skills and knowledge and their appropriation by the state to serve its ends. A review of …
