An Exploration Of Black Church Leaders' Intentions To Develop Critical Consciousness Among African-American Students, Taheesha Quarells Dec 2021

An Exploration Of Black Church Leaders' Intentions To Develop Critical Consciousness Among African-American Students, Taheesha Quarells

Dissertations

African-American students experience human capital opportunity and achievement gaps. Researchers have called for culturally relevant strategies to help close the gaps. The historic Black Church, a part of many African-American students’ culture and community, is a historic and current source of social capital for positive human capital development outcomes. Critical consciousness develops positive human capital outcomes, such as academic achievement, in African-American and other minority students. Much of the literature on critical consciousness is quantitative in nature and therefore does not include the intentions or the willingness of organizations to develop critical consciousness. Therefore, there is a need to understand …

Empowerment Of Farmers: The Role Of Actor And The Persistence Of Coffee Farmers In Rural Pattongko, Indonesia, A. Hasdiansyah, Sugito Sugito, Yoyon Suryono

The Qualitative Report

Many farmers' empowerment has failed because the process is rigid, instructive, and uses too many techniques that are not following the local conditions of the community. Therefore, the empowerment process must be improved to be able to make farmers empowered and independent. The subjects of this study consisted of eight farmers and one empowerment actor. The method used is qualitative through in-depth interviews, observation, and document review. All data were transcribed, organized, then analyzed to produce conclusions. …

The Real Me: Shared Technology’S Impact On Status From The Lens Of Positioning Theory, Christina Nishiyama, Michael E. Nussbaum, Michael S. Van Winkle Nov 2021

The Real Me: Shared Technology’S Impact On Status From The Lens Of Positioning Theory, Christina Nishiyama, Michael E. Nussbaum, Michael S. Van Winkle

College of Education Faculty Research

Participation in collaborative learning environments has demonstrated significant learning advantages due to opportunities for group members to contribute to shared problem-solving processes, shared goals, and co-elaboration of knowledge. Furthermore, research has shown that higher levels of social perceptiveness are positively correlated with higher levels of group performance. However, collaboration is not always successful, sometimes exhibiting imbalances of power and status. In this study, positioning theory and interaction analysis were used to investigate (a) interactions in four racially and gender-mixed groups (of three university students each) working with technology and (b) their negotiated positions of power and status. Results showed that …

Mentoring Black Teens During National Pandemics: Mutually Beneficial Service, Temitope F. Adeoye, Myson Burch, Terrell Glenn, Rachel Scarlett, De'shovon M. Shenault

Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement

Black youth face systemic educational and social barriers that impede their development and achievement. Research shows that mentoring equips youth to tackle these barriers and use their racial background as an asset. Additionally, college students have limited opportunities to engage in long-term service to local communities. The Heads Up Teen Mentoring Program was begun in September 2019 to provide local Black teens access to Black role models committed to helping them achieve their goals. We currently serve five local Black teens and pair them with five Black graduate student mentors. We engage in monthly group and one-on-one sessions with our …

The Acquisition Of Advanced Level Chinese Heritage Language (Chl) Learners:A Comparative Analysis Concerning The Aspect Marker “Le了”, Jingjing Ao

Masters Theses

Over the decades, research on heritage language learners has been quite popular, but most studies concern Russian, Spanish and other languages rather than Chinese. The Chinese heritage language learner’s studies focus mainly on K-12 students and their learning motivations, writing characteristics, and identification recognition and those concerned with language acquisition address their vocabulary and verbal Chinese development. There have been very few studies about learning grammar. This study emphasizes on the acquisition of the aspect marker LE among advanced learners.

To investigate the acquisition characteristics of advanced CHL learners, this study adopted the advanced CHL learners as the research group …

Updating Hp’S Sales Proposal Documents, Cody P. White

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

My capstone project focused on updating out-of-date proposal documents for my current employer, HP Inc. These proposal documents are delivered to each potential customer that is interested in signing up for our managed print services offering. These documents are a key selling tool for the program benefits but in their current format, they are lacking in up-to-date information and contain spelling and grammatical errors. The capstone focuses on the work completed by the stakeholders that are the most affected by the success of these documents.

Integrative Solutions To A Common Problem, Jacob Steele

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

This project was about eliminating a potentially dangerous and costly problem in my neighborhood. Rodent infestation had destroyed my yard as well those of two close neighbors. Holes and tunnels were hazards to us and our animals, while also damaging our sprinkler systems and being aesthetically displeasing. The project utilized new research and traditional methods to provide an ethical preventative and eradicative method of rodent removal. The stakeholders’ attitudes regarding their property, safety, and pest itself, were all considered to come up with the best solution possible for our situation. No rodent was caught but mitigation of any future problems, …

From Displaced To Our Place: Using An Educational Narrative To Build Community In A Displaced Community, Morgan Frederick Aug 2021

From Displaced To Our Place: Using An Educational Narrative To Build Community In A Displaced Community, Morgan Frederick

Symposium of Student Scholars

Thomasville heights is a displacement neighborhood for people pushed out by Atlanta’s Urban Renewal projects. Thomasville Heights remains a casualty of a system of economic segregation. Under this system of segregation these neighborhoods are left in detrimental states. It is in places like Thomasville Heights where the phrase “place matters” becomes a call to action. A town of 6000 residents and only one elementary school, Thomasville heights is bordered by multiple freight yards, a cemetery, landfills, and Atlanta’s US penitentiary, just a 5-minute walk from that one elementary school. There remains a vast difference between that of low-income urban, and …

Safety And Belonging In Immigrant-Serving Districts: Domains Of Educator Practice In A Charged Political Landscape, Rebecca Lowenhaupt, Dafney Blanca Dabach, Ariana Mangual Figueroa

Publications and Research

Drawing from a context of reception framework, this article asks the following questions: How do educators describe issues of safety and belonging in the context of a charged immigration policy climate? What practices have educators developed to support immigrant-origin youth? And, what are the relationships between educators’ perceptions of safety and belonging and educator practices? We analyze educators’ survey responses administered across six school districts in different contexts across the United States, including the Northeast, Midwest, South, and West. We synthesize four domains of educator practice: signaling affirmation, building shared knowledge and capacity, finding and mobilizing resources, and creating space …
