- One of the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s three stated strategic goals is to be “…recognized for its outstanding engagement with the urban, regional, national, and global communities.”
- Starting in fall 2004 the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s (UNO) implemented a service-learning course that takes college students into the Douglas County Department of Corrections (DCDC) to teach basic computer skills to inmates. To date over 200 undergraduates and 600 inmates have completed the course.

Good afternoon, and welcome to the 2015 State of the University Address.
On August 26, 2015, the Omaha World-Herald published an editorial titled: “Mavs move to the big time.” The region’s largest newspaper said this of our university:
“There’s something deeper brewing, a sense of Maverick pride.”
If you walk around UNO today, in very little time, you will feel the pride and the momentum thriving in this place we call home. The spirit among students, faculty, and staff is unlike anything I have witnessed – or felt – in my forty years as a Maverick.

The core collection was acquired through a competitive process open to UNO faculty, staff, students, and local area artists. Giving circles are made up of individuals who pool their resources and then decide together where these should be distributed. They also include social, educational, and engagement components that seem to engage participants in their communities and increase members’ understanding of philanthropy and community issues.
This study examines if and how participation in a giving circle has changed members’ behavior related to giving, volunteering, and civic engagement. In addition, we asked if and how participation in a giving circle has changed members’ awareness or knowledge about philanthropy, nonprofit organizations, and community issues. What an encouraging development a University of Nebraska at Omaha professor describes in a Midlands Voices essay today. UNO, she explains, is working with small-business owners in north Omaha to improve their computer and telecommunications skills.
As noted by Sajda Qureshi, an associate professor in UNO's College of Information Science and Technology, the project has benefited a variety of "microenterprises" in north Omaha. Among the different types of businesses helped: a delicatessen, tutoring services, a massage therapist, a cake decorator, a pet groomer, a modeling agency and a house for inmates re-entering society.

“This session will focus on the personal observations of three faculty who sought to establish a minor in Chicano/a-Latino/a Studies . . .
