Service learning, when properly implemented, can become a powerful pedagogy in developing students’ (and faculty’s) cross-cultural competency and prepare them to deal with a world that is increasingly globalise but deeply divided by racial, ethnic, cultural and religious differences. Professor Xing will highlight both the promises and challenges of the international service-learning movement. He will also discuss principles of good practice in service-learning such as empowerment, capacity building, equity and sustainability.

Reflecting on her involvement in the development of service-learning for American higher education, Professor Permaul has learned that service-learning, when practiced serves society, the learner and the educational institution extremely well. She finds that service-learning as a pedagogy is very compatible with most learning and developmental theories. She further finds that service-learning is a powerful instructional tool, while fulfilling many social challenges and needs.

Now in its second year, the Hong Kong Summer Service Program is sponsored by the Lingnan Foundation, and administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE) and the Asia-Pacific Institute of Ageing Studies (APIAS). After undergoing a competitive application and interview process organized by lIE, six students from Lingnan University, Sun Yat-sen University and Lingnan (University) College were selected to participate in the program, which involves a 6-week summer internship with a community/ social service organization in Hong Kong.

The benefits of service learning for the intellectual and personal development of students have been discussed in the past few decades. Jacoby (1996) defines service learning as, “a form of experiential education in which students engage in activities that address human and community needs together with structured opportunities intentionally designed to promote student learning and development”. The idea of using a service-learning approach in teaching curricula is “far from new” (Gray et al, 2000) and the scope of it has been expanding substantially in tertiary education overseas, though it is still not pervasive in Hong Kong.
