Does Socio/Economic Status Affect Environmental Awarness In Elementary School Children Interacting With School Gardens?, Grady C. Erickson

Environmental Studies Undergraduate Student Theses

This is a case study involving three elementary schools in the greater Lincoln, Nebraska area. These schools were chosen to provide insight to three different economic backgrounds. Saratoga and Randolph from Lincoln Public Schools, and Norris Elementary part of Norris Public Schools 160 was the third school involved in the study. This case study focused on seeing whether socio/economic background had any effect on environmental awareness. To do so, surveys were handed out to each school to help measure environmental awareness. These surveys also helped determine where the environmental literacy standards were in the elementary schools of Lincoln, Nebraska ...

Residential And Business Broadband Prices Part 2: International Comparisons, Scott J. Wallsten, James Riso

Scott J. Wallsten

For this project, we assemble a new dataset consisting of more than 25,000 residential and business broadband plans from all OECD countries from 2007–2009. We explore three issues: the relationship between plan components—such as metering—and consumer prices, price changes over time, and how broadband prices vary across countries.

This paper, part 2 of the project, studies prices and price changes over time in the United States and other OECD countries. We find that residential prices in the U.S. remained fairly stable overall in this time period for both standalone and triple play (voice, video, and ...

Between Market And State: Directions In Social Science Research On Disaster, Daniel P. Aldrich Nov 2010

Between Market And State: Directions In Social Science Research On Disaster, Daniel P. Aldrich

Daniel P Aldrich

In this extended review, I discuss three recent books on disaster: Governing after Crisis: The Politics of Investigation, Accountability, and Learning edited by Arjen Boin, Allan McConnell, and Paul ‘T Hart, Learning from Catastrophes: Strategies for Reaction and Response , edited by Howard Kunreuther and Micheel Useem, and The Next Catastrophe: Reducing Our Vulnerabilities to Natural, Industrial, and Terrorist Disasters by Charles Perrow. All three books invoke the market and state as core forces at work in mitigation and disaster recovery, overlooking the critical role of social capital.

Flexible Bootstrapping-Based Ontology Alignment, Prateek Jain, Pascal Hitzler, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

BLOOMS (Jain et al, ISWC2010) is an ontology alignment system which, in its core, utilizes the Wikipedia category hierarchy for establishing alignments. In this paper, we present a Plug-and-Play extension to BLOOMS, which allows to flexibly replace or complement the use of Wikipedia by other online or offline resources, including domain-specific ontologies or taxonomies. By making use of automated translation services and of Wikipedia in languages other than English, it makes it possible to apply BLOOMS to alignment tasks where the input ontologies are written in different languages.

This bibliography compiles scholarly information and new reports on the topic of wind power in Nevada. As a senior at UNLV majoring in both Economics and French, I began this project in June 2010 in consultation with William E. Brown, Jr., director of planning and communications at Brookings Mountain West. This research topic interests me greatly, and I believe that expanded research and commercial development of alternative energy, including wind power, is essential to the growth and development of Nevada. My service as a Student Ambassador in the College of Business, a position that allows me to represent UNLV to ...

First Annual Invention2venture (I2v) Apprentice Challenge Workshop (2010)

Paul Swamidass

In a nutshell, a number of AU student teams, after an introduction from experts on starting and running a business, were challenged along the lines of Mr. Trump’s TV show, “The Apprentice,” to start a business and produce income in 72 hours with $100 seed investment given to each team. The teams delivered, and in the process gained hands-on experience in entrepreneurship; the teams returned the seed investment and kept the profits. Two teams were rewarded.

Ontology Alignment For Linked Open Data, Prateek Jain, Pascal Hitzler, Amit P. Sheth, Kunal Verma, Peter Z. Yeh

Kno.e.sis Publications

The Web of Data currently coming into existence through the Linked Open Data (LOD) effort is a major milestone in realizing the Semantic Web vision. However, the development of applications based on LOD faces difficulties due to the fact that the different LOD datasets are rather loosely connected pieces of information. In particular, links between LOD datasets are almost exclusively on the level of instances, and schema-level information is being ignored. In this paper, we therefore present a system for finding schema-level links between LOD datasets in the sense of ontology alignment. Our system, called BLOOMS, is based on the ...

Real Challenges To Virtual Reality: Realizing Your Collection Through Digital Partnership, Edward Mandity, Jennifer Johnson Nov 2010

Real Challenges To Virtual Reality: Realizing Your Collection Through Digital Partnership, Edward Mandity, Jennifer Johnson

Library Staff Professional Publications and Scholarship

This article discusses the collaborative digitization effort between librarians at Marian College (now Marian University) and Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) to create a deliverable online collection of an oversized student newspaper (the Phoenix) using CONTENTdm software. The partnership provided mutual benefits for each institution. While Marian received an online collection, IUPUI used the digitization as an opportunity to house the collection as a digital sandbox for its School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) students. Other technological benefits came from the project, including experimentation with migration of collection from IUPUI servers to the PALNI (Private Academic Library Network ...

Del Derecho Y La Economía Al Derecho Económico. Working Paper N. 1, Mario A. Pinzón Mapc

Mario A Pinzón Camargo

The link between law and economics has been condensed in a new space of reflection that can be called a new paradigm within the social sciences, which intends to build the bridges of understanding between these two sciences. In contrast to the classical conception that states the antagonism in between them, due to their constitutive ...

Communication And Collaboration In E-Science Projects, Peter Darch, Matteo Turilli, Marina Jirotka

Peter Darch

Collaborative projects, such as e-Science projects producing software and tools to support the work of scientists, involve the management and coordination of work of a wide range of personnel, and also involve these personnel working together on joint activities. Effective communication practices are essential for the success of e-Science projects, for a number of reasons and in a number of different senses. For instance, there will be many one-way transfers of information, such as project management informing new personnel of the project’s vision and goals, the communication of work plans (including individuals’ roles, the model of software development employed ...

The Role Of Knowledge Management In The Strategic Alignment Of Information Technology With Business: An Alternative And Complementary View, Fernando Paulo Belfo Sep 2010

The Role Of Knowledge Management In The Strategic Alignment Of Information Technology With Business: An Alternative And Complementary View, Fernando Paulo Belfo

Fernando Paulo Belfo

The Information Technology (IT) team knowledge of business strategy and the organization team knowledge of information technology are critical factors in the strategic business and IT alignment (BIA). These two factors have in common precisely the importance of "knowledge". The Information Technology team lack of knowledge about business and its strategy and vice-versa should be a major concern for the organization, since this knowledge strongly affects the possibility of an appropriate strategic alignment between business and the IT. It is significantly important to create an enabling environment for the growth of shared knowledge of the business area, encouraging professional IT ...

Case Study: Narmada Dams Controversy, M.J. Peterson, Osman Kiratli, Ilke Ercan Sep 2010

Case Study: Narmada Dams Controversy, M.J. Peterson, Osman Kiratli, Ilke Ercan

International Dimensions of Ethics Education in Science and Engineering

This case study looks at one of the more famous instances of transnational involvement in stakeholder struggles over large dams: the long-running contention over dam construction on the Narmada Rover in India. Though proposals to build large dams on the Narmada inspired political controversy from the day the first proposals were made in 1947-48, only in the mid-1980s did the controversy take on the transnational aspects for which it is now famous as critics took up the cause of those who would be displaced as the reservoirs created by the dams filled up and raised environmental concerns about the project.

Faculty Success: Developing A Research And Publication Agenda, Kathleen P. King

Leadership, Counseling, Adult, Career and Higher Education Faculty Publications

Anyone associated with higher education will acknowledge that tenure track faculty have to perform a fantastic balancing act. Compared to an administrative or line role in an organization, higher education faculty have tremendous autonomy and freedom. However, they face competing demands of many different (and good) opportunities, and for them the stakes are always high. Help is here! This article introduces a powerful strategy for staying on track in the research strand of this competitive journey.

Ranking Documents Semantically Using Ontological Relationships, Boanerges Aleman-Meza, I. Budak Arpinar, Mustafa V. Nural, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Although arguable success of today’s keyword based search engines in certain information retrieval tasks, ranking search results in a meaningful way remains an open problem. In this work, the goal is to use of semantic relationships for ranking documents without relying on the existence of any specific structure in a document or links between documents. Instead, real-world entities are identified and the relevance of documents is determined using relationships that are known to exist between the entities in a populated ontology. We introduce a measure of relevance that is based on traversal and the semantics of relationships that link ...

A Taxonomy-Based Model For Expertise Extrapolation, Delroy H. Cameron, Boanerges Aleman-Meza, Ismailcem Budak Arpinar, Sheron L. Decker, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

While many ExpertFinder applications succeed in finding experts, their techniques are not always designed to capture the various levels at which expertise can be expressed. Indeed, expertise can be inferred from relationships between topics and subtopics in a taxonomy. The conventional wisdom is that expertise in subtopics is also indicative of expertise in higher level topics as well. The enrichment of Expertise Profiles for finding experts can therefore be facilitated by taking domain hierarchies into account. We present a novel semantics-based model for finding experts, expertise levels and collaboration levels in a peer review context, such as composing a Program ...

Cross-Market Model Adaptation With Pairwise Preference Data For Web Search Ranking, Jing Bai, Fernando Diaz, Yi Chang, Zhaohui Zheng, Keke Chen Aug 2010

Cross-Market Model Adaptation With Pairwise Preference Data For Web Search Ranking, Jing Bai, Fernando Diaz, Yi Chang, Zhaohui Zheng, Keke Chen

Kno.e.sis Publications

Machine-learned ranking techniques automatically learn a complex document ranking function given training data. These techniques have demonstrated the effectiveness and flexibility required of a commercial web search. However, manually labeled training data (with multiple absolute grades) has become the bottleneck for training a quality ranking function, particularly for a new domain. In this paper, we explore the adaptation of machine-learned ranking models across a set of geographically diverse markets with the market-specific pairwise preference data, which can be easily obtained from clickthrough logs. We propose a novel adaptation algorithm, Pairwise-Trada, which is able to adapt ranking models that are trained ...

Pattern Space Maintenance For Data Updates And Interactive Mining, Mengling Feng, Guozhu Dong, Jinyan Li, Yap-Peng Tan, Limsoon Wong Aug 2010

Pattern Space Maintenance For Data Updates And Interactive Mining, Mengling Feng, Guozhu Dong, Jinyan Li, Yap-Peng Tan, Limsoon Wong

Kno.e.sis Publications

This article addresses the incremental and decremental maintenance of the frequent pattern space. We conduct an in-depth investigation on how the frequent pattern space evolves under both incremental and decremental updates. Based on the evolution analysis, a new data structure, Generator-Enumeration Tree (GE-tree), is developed to facilitate the maintenance of the frequent pattern space. With the concept of GE-tree, we propose two novel algorithms, Pattern Space Maintainer+ (PSM+) and Pattern Space Maintainer− (PSM−), for the incremental and decremental maintenance of frequent patterns. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms, on average, outperform the representative state-of-the-art methods by an order of ...

The Power Of People: Social Capital’S Role In Recovery From The 1995 Kobe Earthquake, Daniel P. Aldrich Jul 2010

The Power Of People: Social Capital’S Role In Recovery From The 1995 Kobe Earthquake, Daniel P. Aldrich

Daniel P Aldrich

Despite the regularity of disasters, social science has only begun to generate replicable knowledge about the factors which facilitate post-crisis recovery. Building on the broad variation in recovery rates within disaster-affected cities, I investigate the ability of Kobe’s nine wards to repopulate after the 1995 Kobe earthquake in Japan. This article uses case studies of neighborhoods in Kobe alongside new time-series, cross-sectional data set to test five variables thought to influence recovery along with the relatively untested factor of social capital. Controlling for damage, population density, economic conditions, inequality and other variables thought important in past research, social capital ...
