“We’Re Off To Replace The Wizard”: Lessons From A Collaborative Group Project Assignment, Miguel Centellas, Gregory J. Love Jul 2012

“We’Re Off To Replace The Wizard”: Lessons From A Collaborative Group Project Assignment, Miguel Centellas, Gregory J. Love

Miguel Centellas

This article examines the effectiveness of a collaborative group learning project for teaching a core competency in comparative politics: constitutional structures. We use a quasi-experimental design and propensity score matching to assess the value of a consti- tutional writing group project and presentation. The results provide strong evidence that these learning tools are highly valuable for teaching abstract concepts. Students who par- ticipated in the project scored significantly higher on a short series of questions in final exams given several weeks after the completion of the group project. Somewhat paradox- ically, the project increased competency but did not affect student …

A Story Of Four Revolutions: Mechanisms Of Change In India, Aseema Sinha Jul 2012

A Story Of Four Revolutions: Mechanisms Of Change In India, Aseema Sinha

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

Sumit Ganguly and Rahul Mukherji’s India Since 1980 presents a bold and ambitious argument about change across and within India. Its unique contribution lies in its description of four distinct revolutions: social-political, economic, foreign policy, and religious. While many recent books have noted changes in India’s economy and foreign policy, India Since 1980 will be known for its juxtaposition of four different themes in one short, pithy volume. Even if one may disagree with the authors’ choice of the four dimensions of change, the book’s dominant message is that India is changing across a whole range of policies and arenas.

Hungary's Illiberal Turn: Can Outsiders Help?, Cas Mudde, Erin K. Jenne Jun 2012

Hungary's Illiberal Turn: Can Outsiders Help?, Cas Mudde, Erin K. Jenne

Cas Mudde

Since the conservative FIDESZ won the 2010 Hungarian elections, the new government under Premier Victor Orban has begun an unprecedented reform of the country's political system, strongly undermining the fundamentals of liberal democracy. With the opposition parties discredited, the only hope is in a slowly developing civil society. This article looks at what the international community (in particular the EU) can do to pressure the Hungarian government to respect liberal democracy and to strengthen the democratic opposition.

La Automatización Del Voto. Entre El Miedo Y La Pasión: Un Análisis De Cuatro Casos Europeos, (Autor) Letizia Caporusso, (Traductor) Fernando Barrientos Del Monte

Fernando Barrientos Del Monte

Technical Relevance And Social Opposition To E-Voting, Fernando Barrientos Del Monte Jun 2012

Technical Relevance And Social Opposition To E-Voting, Fernando Barrientos Del Monte

Fernando Barrientos Del Monte

This paper makes an assessment of the technical and social motivations that drive some governments to promote and implement e-voting mechanisms. Success stories mentioned, especially those in Latin America, and contrasted with those cases where e-voting implementation has failed, as has happened in some European countries. Finally, the relationship between new technologies that promote e-voting and the nature of the elections as a part of democracy is analyzed. It could be argued that voting is not solely a technical exercise, it is an element that merges different political and social elements that e-voting promoters should not ignore.

Política Comparada, Estado Y Democracia En La Teoría De Stein Rokkan, Fernando Barrientos Del Monte

Fernando Barrientos Del Monte

Developing A Georgia Policy Database: A Research Proposal, Paul E. Rutledge Jun 2012

Developing A Georgia Policy Database: A Research Proposal, Paul E. Rutledge

Georgia Journal of Public Policy

Scholars of state and local politics have long faced the problem of data availability. The crux of the problem is consistent and reliable measures that are amenable analysis over time or across states. The problem with data on the state or local level is one of information retrieval. Such tasks are especially laborious, and are necessarily focused on a small part of a much broader system of policy dynamics. The lack of a systematic framework for data collection or analysis makes projects that focus on a time span of longer than a few years or more than a handful of …

Georgia Journal of Public Policy

This is the second volume of the annual Georgia Journal of Public Policy, and as the editor I would like to use these introductory comments to discuss three things. First, I am happy to report on how the journal’s first issue performed in terms of readership. Second, I will introduce a new section of the journal that features undergraduate student research on policy in Georgia. Finally, I will discuss future plans for the journal.

Zenonas Tziarras

Pertinencia Técnica Y Oposición Social Al Voto Electrónico, Fernando Barrientos Del Monte Jun 2012

Pertinencia Técnica Y Oposición Social Al Voto Electrónico, Fernando Barrientos Del Monte

Fernando Barrientos Del Monte

Modelos De Gestión Electoral En América Latina En Perspectiva Comparada, Fernando Barrientos Del Monte Jun 2012

Modelos De Gestión Electoral En América Latina En Perspectiva Comparada, Fernando Barrientos Del Monte

Fernando Barrientos Del Monte

“This Is What Democracy Looks Like”: Is Representation Under Siege?, Jose Pedro Zuquete May 2012

“This Is What Democracy Looks Like”: Is Representation Under Siege?, Jose Pedro Zuquete

Jose Pedro Zuquete

Since the end of the 20th century loud calls for reinstating the rule of the people in liberal democracies have been heard, particularly in but not limited to alter-globalization circles devoted to creating another world. This trend has been strengthened in the passage to the 21st century and this article traces the influences behind it, as well as the motivations and ways in which representative democracy is rejected by activists in favor of a new system that fulfills what is perceived as the original promise of democracy to bring power to all the people. The article concludes with a discussion …

When Is It Our Time?: An Event History Model Of Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Rights Policy Adoption, Megan E. Osterbur May 2012

When Is It Our Time?: An Event History Model Of Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Rights Policy Adoption, Megan E. Osterbur

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Gays and lesbians have long struggled for their rights as citizens, yet only recently has their struggle been truly politicized in a way that fosters mobilization. When and why social movements coalesce despite the many obstacles to collective action are fundamental questions in comparative politics. While examining social movements is worthwhile, it is important to examine not only when and why a social movement forms, but also when and why a social movement is successful. This dissertation tackles the latter of these objectives, focusing on when and why social movements have success in terms of their duration from the time …

Civil War And Globalization: The Effect Of Colonialism On Political Globalization, Luke O. Feltz May 2012

Civil War And Globalization: The Effect Of Colonialism On Political Globalization, Luke O. Feltz

Celebration

The purpose of this paper to determine why civil war onset reduces political globalization in former British colonies. Through linear regression and logistic regression analyses, I test the affect of civil war onset and the presence of civil war on political globalization, controlling for former British colonies, French colonies, and other factors. More important, however, is the history behind British colonialism. Through setting up a unique institutional system and maintaining ties to its former colonies, the British have created an atmosphere conducive to international political engagement after the onset of civil war. This study shows that while civil war onset …

Venezuela Y Las Incertidumbre Electorales, Augusto Reina

Augusto Reina

Party System Dynamics In Bolivia: Regionalized Party Politics In A Devolving State, Miguel Centellas May 2012

Party System Dynamics In Bolivia: Regionalized Party Politics In A Devolving State, Miguel Centellas

Miguel Centellas

In 2009, Bolivia adopted a new constitution that grants significant political autonomy to the country’s nine departments. The creation of nine autonomous departmental governments with elected executives (governors) and legislatures (departmental assemblies) represents a radical departure from the traditional unitary state model. This raises a number of empirical and theoretical questions about the relationship between national- and department-level institutions in the context of a devolving and democratizing state—particularly one with a hegemonic government party facing regionally concentrated opposition. This paper is a preliminary, and primarily descriptive, exploration of how parties in decentralized, devolved, or “federalized” states operate simultaneously in two …

Breaking Free of Managed Democracy in the United States Sean Cunningham Sponsor: Eske Møllgaard, Philosophy

In the last four years I have had a number of opportunities to write about democracy in the United States and around the world. In this four year period there have been major democratic movements in North Africa, the Middle East, the United States, and elsewhere. Whether or not these democratic growths can remain is an important political and philosophical question that needs addressing. So it is only fitting that I dedicate my Honors Project to collecting my previous work on democracy in my philosophy …

Interregionalism As A Foreign Policy Of The European Union: A Case For Soft Power?, Maxim Miroshnikov May 2012

Interregionalism As A Foreign Policy Of The European Union: A Case For Soft Power?, Maxim Miroshnikov

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

This paper looks at the interregionalism as a part of the European Union's foreign policy. It argues that the EU's use of soft power can be traced within this policy. The paper proposes two methods of defining soft power in action: through presence and through purposive action. Three case studies are analyzed to support this. It is shown that indeed the EU exercised soft power toward other actors using these mechanisms. Success of these actions was however not always present.

The "Troubles:" Northern Irish Political Contention From Sunningdale To The Good Friday Agreement, Daniel J. Foley May 2012

The "Troubles:" Northern Irish Political Contention From Sunningdale To The Good Friday Agreement, Daniel J. Foley

Honors Capstone Projects - All

This paper looks to answer the question: Can the contentious politics thesis of Doug McAdam, Sidney Tarrow, and Charles Tilly explain why the Good Friday Agreement (1998) (GFA) successfully produced a lasting peace in Northern Ireland, when the Sunningdale (1973) and the Anglo-Irish (1985) agreements failed to do so? I set out to study the buildup and aftermath of each agreement and subsequently examine each through the lens of the contentious politics thesis, searching for causal mechanisms and processes that explain the success of the GFA. The purpose of the contentious politics thesis is not to examine various forms of …
