Exploring Etymology Assignment Description, David Wolff
Exploring Etymology Assignment Description, David Wolff
Open Educational Resources - Teaching and Learning
The English language is a borrowed language, a blend of words from many languages from around the world. We see this in the various ways sounds are represented by letters and letter combinations. In transparent or shallow orthographies, there is high predictability and consistent letter-sound correspondence whereas in opaque or deep orthographies, there are many ways to spell the same sound as well as there are many sounds for the same spellings (Burkins & Yates, 2021; Moats, 2020). This assignment description is a guided inquiry for preservice teachers to explore the concept of etymology by watching and reflecting on six …
What Before Means: Teaching About The Communicative Contribution Of The English Pluperfect, Max Miller
What Before Means: Teaching About The Communicative Contribution Of The English Pluperfect, Max Miller
Publications and Research
This paper presents a text-based analysis of the communicative functions of the simple past and pluperfect tenses of English, and offers a pedagogical approach to assist learners in acquiring them. Following a functional, usage-based linguistics perspective, the analysis holds that the simple past expresses Time PAST, while the pluperfect expresses Time PAST, BEFORE. Thus only the latter tense signals a speaker's subjective creation of a linkage in time. The understanding of these meanings can enhance an English language teacher's effectiveness in the classroom (as in selecting texts and activities) and a language user's effectiveness in communication. A classroom-based pedagogical application …
Brown's Stages Of Morphosyntactic Development Applied To The Typical Development Of Italian, Marie Laiche
Brown's Stages Of Morphosyntactic Development Applied To The Typical Development Of Italian, Marie Laiche
LSU Master's Theses
Background: In A First Language (1973), Roger Brown called for an increase in crosslinguistic data and analysis of morphosyntax across languages as more research in this field is crucial for working out the overarching determinants of language acquisition order and for the ability to accurately compare child language acquisition across different languages. An increase in this research would benefit linguistic researchers and speech-language-pathologists offering services to or evaluating children speaking a different language or more than one language. The current study seeks to add to the field of crosslinguistic research by adapting Brown’s guidelines of English language acquisition to the …
Incorporating Effective Grammar Instruction Into The Classroom, Erin Mary Harrity
Incorporating Effective Grammar Instruction Into The Classroom, Erin Mary Harrity
Honors Program Theses
The debate about the effectiveness of traditional grammar instruction has been ongoing for many decades now. Traditional grammar instruction involves memorization of grammatical rules and practice exercise drills. As early as 1936, the Curriculum Commission of the National Council of Teachers of English stated that “‘all teaching of grammar separate from the manipulation of sentences [should] be discontinued…since every scientific attempt to prove that knowledge of grammar is useful has failed’” (Weaver, Teaching 9). So why is grammar still being taught in the same way-through traditional direct instruction-in many schools? It is because some parents, administrators, politicians, researchers, and teachers …
Manual For The Motivational Interviewing Skill Code (Misc), Paul Amrhein, William R. Miller, Theresa Moyers, Denise Ernst
Manual For The Motivational Interviewing Skill Code (Misc), Paul Amrhein, William R. Miller, Theresa Moyers, Denise Ernst
Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Over years of using MISC 1 we have learned much about which categories were redundant or unreliable, and also about which processes are most important to the effectiveness of MI. The MISC has also helped us to clarify the points at which skill acquisition in MI is more challenging.
Based on this experience, we have developed Version 2.0, which is intended to improve on the original MISC in reliability, efficiency, and relevance to training and clinical practice. A disadvantage of revising an instrument, of course, is that one must start over in demonstrating its reliability and validity. Although many strong …
Syntactic Complexity, Error And The Holistic Evaluation Of Esl Student Essays, John S. Sparks
Syntactic Complexity, Error And The Holistic Evaluation Of Esl Student Essays, John S. Sparks
Dissertations and Theses
This study was designed to test five hypotheses in order to answer the following general research questions: 1) Are measures of syntactic complexity valid indices of ESL writing quality as measured by the holistic rating of student essays? 2) Would a measure of frequency and seriousness of error reflect evaluators' perceptions of ESL writing quality?
An Introduction To Rods : Grammar And Story Telling, Edward A. Combes
An Introduction To Rods : Grammar And Story Telling, Edward A. Combes
MA TESOL Collection
In this paper I propose a way of using rods in teaching ESOL that is consistent with my personal assumptions about teaching and learning. It is written for teachers with no or little previous experience working with rods.
The introduction of the paper tells of my own start in working with rods and why I feel rods to be an exciting and important learning tool. Next there is a step-by-step analysis of the application of rods in teaching the present, past, future, and perfect verb tenses. Finally I address ways of using rods to generate stories, with rods representing all …
Of Time And Tense: An Analysis Of The English Verb Tense System For The Esl Teacher, William David Helz
Of Time And Tense: An Analysis Of The English Verb Tense System For The Esl Teacher, William David Helz
MA TESOL Collection
The intent of the writer with this paper is to provide the ESL instructor with the knowledge necessary to effective planning for and teaching of lessons concerning the verb tenses of English.
The analysis given in the paper is an attempt at viewing the verb tenses as compromising a system which is basically symmetrical and surprisingly logical. As such, it is felt that through exploring the relationships tenses share with one another, we have found the key to demonstrating tense usage and meaning effectively for students and to planning drills and exercises which will zero in on the primary conceptual …
Charts That Show Basic Transformations In English, Lawrence Fuller Allen
Charts That Show Basic Transformations In English, Lawrence Fuller Allen
MA TESOL Collection
This project is a teaching tool to be used in the ESL classroom. It consists of six large (30" x 20") multicolored charts. Each charts focuses on a particular "operator" verb in English ("be," "do," or the modals) and shows the role the operator plays in the grammatical transformations of question formation and negation. The student can actually see how the same sentence changes from the statement to the question form and from affirmative to negative. In addition to the charts themselves, the project includes a written description of the charts, suggestions for using them in the classroom, and tables …

A Reference Manual Of French, Italian, Romanian, Portuguese And Spanish Regular Verb Tense Formation, John Zioze
A Reference Manual Of French, Italian, Romanian, Portuguese And Spanish Regular Verb Tense Formation, John Zioze
MA TESOL Collection
The present work is intended to serve as a reference manual of the formation of the regular verb forms in five related Romance tongues - Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese and Romanian. Because of their common origin in Latin, it is logical to expect that these languages share many aspects of verb formation in common. This work compiles information about the morphological patterning of verbs and relates these to use and tense with charts reflecting their inflectioned endings. Such information will hopefully be of value to students of Romance languages as well as students of comparative linguistics.

Teacher's Manual For "The Magnetic Sentence": A Classroom Aid For Teaching English As A Second Language, Jeffrey Smith
Teacher's Manual For "The Magnetic Sentence": A Classroom Aid For Teaching English As A Second Language, Jeffrey Smith
MA TESOL Collection
"The Magnetic Sentence" is a classroom aid for teaching English as a second language. It consists of (1) a set of word-cards on which are written words, phrases, or morphemes; (2) a board for displaying these word cards; and (3) a teacher's manual.
The set is designed to show visually many common grammatical transformations by presenting them on a display board. This is done by placing the word-cards on the display board and rearranging, deleting, and adding to them to show the process involved in a transformation.
The following transformations and constructions can be shown with the set: affirmative statements, …
