Navigating Scholarship Discovery, Research Impact, And Open Access, Carol A. Watson, Jean-Gabriel Bankier, Gregg Gordon
Presentations
The leadership teams of bepress and SSRN will present the findings of an integration pilot conducted in partnership with Columbia Law School’s Arthur W. Diamond Law Library, the University of Georgia School of Law’s Alexander Campbell King Law Library, and Southern Methodist University’s Cox School of Business. Expanding the reach of open access scholarship is central to the mission of both bepress and SSRN. However for many institutions, the separation of the two platforms had created barriers to faculty engagement and the building of successful open access initiatives. With both companies now part of the Elsevier portfolio, it seemed the …

Faculty Articles & Research
Description: Since the acquisition of the Berkeley Electronic Press (bepress) by Elsevier last summer, there has been much discussion online, in listserves, and elsewhere about what that development means for the future of open access and scholarly communications. The people most directly affected are the users of the bepress DigitalCommons repository hosting service. Some have recoiled in horror at the new ownership situation, others are waiting to see what happens next. This is a panel discussion by current users concerning what they see in the road ahead, including what they regard as essential services, possible options, functionality requirements, and …

Creating Green Open Access To Institutional Scholarship Using Digital Commons, Deborah L. White, Yumi Ohira
Creating Green Open Access To Institutional Scholarship Using Digital Commons, Deborah L. White, Yumi Ohira
Kansas Library Association College and University Libraries Section Proceedings
The digital repository serves as a Green Open Access solution to globally share scholarship produced by the university community. Both Pittsburg State University (PSU) and Fort Hays State University (FHSU) previously used CONTENTdm (CDM) as their primary digital repository. In 2015, both PSU and FHSU purchased and launched Bepress Digital Commons (DC), a more robust repository. Considering global discoverability, unlimited storage, efficient technical support, and the ability to share a wide range of file formats in one interface, Digital Commons by Bepress is the most reliable for small institutions.
This paper is based on the presentation delivered by PSU and …

Karl Lorenz, Professor Education: First Selectedworks Site At Shu, Karl M. Lorenz
Librarian Publications
Karl M. Lorenz, Professor of Education, describes his experience as the first creator of a SelectedWorks site at SHU at the time that this important service was initiated. He is pleased that all of his scholarly work is now available online and accessible to others. The Readership Reports and maps and the information contained on the Author Dashboard confirm that articles and papers I authored are being regularly accessed not only in Portuguese and Spanish-speaking countries, but also in the U.S. and in many countries the world over. The online dissemination of my work has also resulted in email inquiries, …

Craft Publishing: A Proposal For A Programmatic Paradigm Shift In Academic Libraries, Sue Ann Gardner, Paul Royster, Linnea Fredrickson, Brian Rosenblum, L. Ada Emmett
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Conference Presentations and Speeches
This presentation will include the parameters by which an effective, at-cost publishing program may be structured in academic libraries. With advances in technology, electronic storage, and connectivity, and contrary to the claim that such activities may result in a “race to the bottom,” libraries have proven to be natural entities within which to effect a paradigm change in scholarly publishing. Activities to date, however, have been more often than not underfunded and understaffed. Even among those that have been well supported, efforts across the community have been ad hoc. Within the context of recent initiatives and discussions, the authors will …
