Technology has created important new possibilities to expand and enrich the scholar's work situation. The Internet, on-line databases, collaborative technologies including Listserv/discussion groups and teleconferencing have made it possible for nonprofit scholars to collaborate in innovative new ways and produce their work at unprecedented rates. Electronic technology is one of the significant forces underpinning the growth on nonprofit scholarship. A number of institutions have made great strides in providing a rich research environment for nonprofit scholars. Efforts to create on-line communities have been fruitful and rewarding. Nonprofit researchers can develop relationships and share ideas with others anywhere in the world. …

First Recipients Of Anthropological Doctorates In The United States, 1891-1930, Jay H. Bernstein

Publications and Research

This article seeks to show the origins of the professionalization of anthropology by examining early doctoral dissertations in this field and their authors. The bibliography consists of citations with biographical details of the authors, when known, of doctoral dissertations in anthropology from United States educational institutions up to 1930. One hundred twenty-four citations are given in all, representing 18 institutions. Forty-one of the dissertations were not written for degrees in anthropology. Besides documenting the existence of anthropological work outside recognized graduate programs of anthropology, the bibliography provides a demographic profile of anthropology and shows the distribution of subdiscipline concentrations and …

E-Journals And Print Journals: Similarities And Differences In Reader Behavior, Carol Tenopir, Donald W. King

Research from three decades shows that scientists read widely from scholarly journals, with the readings per person per year increasing in the last decade. Many of these readings now come from electronic journals, e-prints, and other separate copies. A greater percentage of readings are now of new articles and readings from electronic journals are more likely to be of current articles. A majority of scientists in a discipline now use electronic journals at least part of the time, although there are considerable variation among disciplines .On the average, our studies show that between one-third and 80% of journal article readings …

Tatiana Bryant’s current research focuses on perceptions of Open Educational Resources (OER) and Open Access amongst scholars who identify as Black, Indigenous, and people of color, with an emphasis on Ethnic Studies faculty and graduate students. Ethnic Studies is a discipline founded with a unique ethos centered in community building, public scholarship, and racial and social justice. This mission aligns with the philosophy of Open, specifically the creation and accessibility of OER. Despite this ideological alignment, there is a substantial lack of OER for Ethnic Studies. In thinking about technology and libraries, what struck me most is that we are living and experiencing a great turning point in history.
