Popular Sources, Advertising, And Information Literacy: What Librarians Need To Know, Rachel King Jan 2016

Popular Sources, Advertising, And Information Literacy: What Librarians Need To Know, Rachel King

Brooklyn Library Faculty Publications

Sponsored content, also known as “native advertising,” is a relatively new form of advertising in which corporate sponsors fund articles in periodicals and often exert significant control over the editorial process. This model is a dramatic reversal from past practice; throughout the 20th century, allowing advertisers and sales departments to dictate editorial content was considered unethical by most observers both inside and outside of journalism. Because the information literate student is one who can navigate both library databases and the open web, this article urges academic reference and instruction librarians to gain a deeper understanding of how advertising impacts the …

Canada’S New Open Access Policy: Integrating Libraries Into Open Scholarship, K. Jane Burpee, Rosarie Coughlan, Dave Johnston, Patricia Moore, Elizabeth Yates

Leddy Library Presentations

Canada’s new Open Access policy requires government-funded researchers — and encourages all Canadian researchers — to make their work publicly accessible by either publishing in Open Access journals or archiving it in repositories. This policy signals that Open Access is now a default setting for research in Canada and presents tremendous opportunities for libraries to support open scholarship through outreach, advocacy, support services and infrastructure. This presentation will explore policy, practice and implications for funders, institutions and researchers. We will focus on how libraries can facilitate the cultural shift to open research by raising awareness of the benefits of open …

Committing To The Non-Traditional: The Path To The Incorporation Of 3d Models In An Online Journal, Dillon Mark Wackerman, Robert Z. Selden Jr. Jan 2016

Committing To The Non-Traditional: The Path To The Incorporation Of 3d Models In An Online Journal, Dillon Mark Wackerman, Robert Z. Selden Jr.

Fondren Library Research

In 2013 Dr. Robert Selden approached the Center for Digital Scholarship (CDS) at Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA) inquiring about the possibility of including interactive 3D models in a digital collection. Working with Dr. Selden, the CDS found a platform to which these models could be deposited and displayed. Concurrently, the CDS was actively promoting SFA’s institutional repository, SFA ScholarWorks. One guiding idea behind these IR-focused activities was the emphasis of the legitimacy of non-traditional works in respect to SFA ScholarWorks and the academic community as a whole. This idea and acceptance of the non-traditional was maintained as the …

Health 2.0: The Scholarly Communication Practices Of Medical Sciences And Health Sciences Users On Academia.Edu, Lydia Thorne

FIMS Working Papers

Many academics are active users of social media and some even use these sites for professional networking. However, while scholars can use traditional social networking platforms to network with their peers, share research articles, and keep up to date in their fields, there are some limitations that emerge when these sites are used for academic purposes. Academic social networking sites have emerged as one viable alternative, as they allow scholars to share their research and to network and collaborate with others while maintaining a professional online presence. Although many studies have examined the information behaviour of those who use academic …

Authority And Source Evaluation In The Critical Library Classroom, Eamon Tewell, Katelyn Angell Jan 2016

Authority And Source Evaluation In The Critical Library Classroom, Eamon Tewell, Katelyn Angell

Brooklyn Library Faculty Publications

These lesson plans began with a desire to explore notions of authority in the library classroom at our mid-sized urban university, including how authority is used by teachers to the benefit or detriment of learners and how learners can begin to reclaim their own authority. In creating these lesson plans, we sought to begin with students’ experiences, promote their sense of personal empowerment, and encourage them to consider the complexities of source evaluation.

Library E-Book Platforms Are Broken: Let's Fix Them, Joelle Thomas, Galadriel Chilton Jan 2016

Library E-Book Platforms Are Broken: Let's Fix Them, Joelle Thomas, Galadriel Chilton

Library Staff Publications

E-books promise users convenience and accessibility, but library e-book platforms contain so many barriers to use and access that patrons often turn away in frustration. In addition, aggregators’ e-book platforms often include intrusive, onerous digital rights management (DRM) restrictions. The traditional solution of DRM-free e-books are generally only available only in large and expensive publisher packages. One approach to solving these problems is an evidence-based selection of e-books program; it not only offers access to hundreds of DRM-free, unlimited simultaneous-user e-books that are integrated with similar e-journal content, but also includes an agreement that libraries will only purchase titles with …

Final Report: Eunis – Eurocris Joint Survey On Cris And Ir, Lígia Ribeiro, Pablo De Castro, Michele Mennielli

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

The rising strategic importance of Current Research Information Systems (CRISs) and Institutional Repositories (IRs) for higher education and research institutions relates to the need to foster research and innovation and to provide a faster and broader technology transfer to industry and society. These are critical factors for global competitiveness, and the increasing competition among institutions to increase and disseminate excellence in research is another area where these systems provide a key contribution. Additional important elements with a strong impact on such strategic evolution are the new policies on Open Access, National Research Assessment and Research Funding. It is indeed from …

Altmetrics are increasingly being used and discussed as an expansion of the tools available for measuring the scholarly impact of research in the knowledge environment. The NISO Alternative Assessment Metrics Project was begun in July 2013 with funding from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to address several areas of limitations and gaps that hinder the broader adoption of altmetrics. This document is one output from this project, intended to help organizations that wish to use altmetrics to ensure their consistent application across the community. “Working Group C” studied and discussed issues of data quality in the altmetrics realm, an essential …

Open Access Theses & Dissertations: Airing The Anxieties & Finding The Facts, Jill Cirasella

Publications and Research

Writing a thesis or dissertation is hard, and now that most theses and dissertations are deposited and distributed electronically, graduating students face an additional complication: they must decide whether they want to make their dissertations immediately open access (OA), or, at universities that require OA, they must come to terms with the fact that their work will be OA. In this presentation, I survey and scrutinize the anxieties and myths surrounding OA theses and dissertations.

The Mathematics Of Scientific Research: Scientometrics, Citation Metrics, And Impact Factors, Clayton Hayes

Library Scholarly Publications

This talk will consist of an introduction to the rationale behind the establishment of the field of Scientometrics, which attempts to measure and analyze the body of research done in the sciences. This is primarily through analyzing the connections between scientific journals, articles, and authors. I will cover the foundational works of Price and Garfield in the fields of citation networks and impact factor, respectively, and will give some historical context for these developments. I will also speak briefly on more recent developments in these areas, such as the Eigenfactor, author citation metrics, and (time permitting) alternative metrics.

Working over a span of nearly eight years, the University of Michigan Library received three grants from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to generously fund CRMS, a cooperative effort by partner research libraries to identify books in the public domain in HathiTrust. In CRMS- US (2008– 11), CRMS reviewed over 170,000 volumes in the HathiTrust Digital Library that were published in the United States between 1923 and 1963 (“CRMS- US”). That first project team— which included reviewers from the University of Michigan, the University of Wisconsin, the University of Minnesota, and Indiana University— identified nearly 87,000 volumes …

Strengthening Research Through Data Sharing, Elizabeth Warren Jan 2016

Strengthening Research Through Data Sharing, Elizabeth Warren

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

Data sharing has incredible potential to strengthen academic research, the practice of medicine, and the integrity of the clinical trial system. Some benefits are obvious: when researchers have access to complete data, they can answer new questions, explore different lines of analysis, and more efficiently conduct large-scale analyses across trials. Other advantages, such as providing a guardrail against conflicts of interest in a clinical trial system in which external sponsorship of research is common and necessary, are less visible yet just as critical. I appreciate that there are many policy, privacy, and practical issues that need to be addressed in …

What Is Era Really Measuring?, Lyndall Adams, Clive Barstow, Paul Uhlmann

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

How successful is ERA in measuring creative research? The ERA (2015) results would appear to advantage: citations over peer review, traditional research over non-traditional outputs and certain geographical locations over others. If indeed this is true, what are the implications for the future development of NTOs in this country given the recent article by NAVA (Winikoff, 2016), presenting the debate about the state of play of our art schools as one of survival and loss. The case for survival is one that needs to be closely examined where local and geographical factors are at play.

Critical Friendship For Librarians: Striving Together For Scholarly Advancement, Yoko Inagi Ferguson, Helena Marvin

Publications and Research

Critical friendship is a form of non-hierarchical developmental relationship in which there is no mentor or protégé. In critical friendship, individuals with similar aims and differing experiences and knowledge aid each other in achieving goals by critically observing each other’s performance and progress. Bonded with trust, critical friends serve as sworn friends who strive and struggle side by side and share joy and pain throughout their journey. Originating from within the field of higher education, the critical friendship methodology has primarily been used by educators to improve their teaching skills, but has been found to be a powerful resource for …
