Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association
Communication students of the twenty-first century must not only be able to interact in multiple formats but be able to express their ideas across varied platforms. A common deterrent faced by students conducting research is the lack of applicability of the subject matter to their lives. The integration of genealogical research can address this issue because it allows students to learn about, and celebrate, their family history. While engaged in such a pursuit, students will develop core communication skills, such as speaking and listening, online research, and message design.

This research poster is based on a working research paper which moves beyond the traditional scope of repair and examines the Right to Repair movement from a smaller, more personal lens by detailing the 6 categorical impediments as dubbed by Dr. Alissa Centivany (design, law, economic/business strategy, material asymmetry, informational asymmetry, and social impediments) have continuously inhibited repair and affected repair practices, which has consequently had larger implications (environmental, economic, social, etc.) on ourselves, our objects, and our world. How To Create A Stunning Video Orientation By Hand, Rachel S. Evans

This article describes the multi-faceted approach UGA Law Library took with their fall 2018 first year student orientation. It describes the process of the creating a virtual tour experience, pairing it with a hybrid face-to-face event, and assessing the impact of all aspects of the orientation. The creation of the video itself involved a multi-media approach using a combination of visual arts and technology to animate a product that has a longer expiration than traditional video or in-person library orientations offer.

UGA Law Library’s longstanding newsletter Amicus Briefs first saw circulation in 1984. Over a period of more than 30 years the publication has changed hands, formats and styles many times. Today the newsletter is published both electronically and physically, and in 2017 is now further expanding its reach via podcasting. This session will trace one library newsletter’s journey, sharing lessons learned along the way about platform and content choices, marketing and dissemination, and measuring readership. The past and present technology used will also be discussed including HTML, Drupal, WordPress, MailChimp, Google Analytics, Facebook and Piktochart.

The transmission of culture depends upon every generation reconsidering what it means to be literate. The way we consider ourselves to be a literate species is changing, which puts us at a unique turning point in human history. Verbal literacy, or the ability to read and write, is slowly being replaced by visual literacy as a primary tool for human communication. As a culture, we tend to underestimate the creative ferment of our increasingly visual world. Infographics are on the rise as a communication medium in libraries. We live in a visual world; we are visual creatures, naturally drawn to graphical representations. Using free web applications, librarians and their support staff can now easily create beautiful and compelling infographics which can serve multiple purposes in the library environment. From February 4 - March 31, 2013, a small exhibition showcasing Yale’s rich Himalayan holdings was open to the public in the Memorabilia Room of the Sterling Memorial Library, across the hall from Manuscripts and Archives near the Wall Street entrance of the library. Students at higher education institutions need to learn how to use the library and to give public speaking presentations, and most will experience Speech and or Library Anxiety. We review Library and Speech Anxiety, and a collaboration between librarians and faculty that produced a freshman course Library Demonstration Assignment. We describe its generation, implementation, and refinement and its effectiveness in preparing students to use the library and to practice public speaking with confidence.
