This presentation will review the challenges encountered and lessons learned by two separate library systems in implementing OpenAthens authentication. The Texas Medical Center Library, which replaced EZproxy, serves multiple academic institutions. The University of Toledo Libraries, which replaced WAM, serves two different campuses.

Issues associated with lack of civility, less than ideal functionality and employees that may not self-reflect as much they should are all challenges in the modern workplace and libraries are no exception. The purpose of this study was to determine which issues associated with a lack of civility such as mobbing, bullying, workplace dysfunction, and lack of abilities regarding self-reflection were found in the library workplace and to what extent. The data represents the feedback of 4,168 library employees through a self-reporting survey instrument designed by the authors with the help of the American Library Association. E-books promise users convenience and accessibility, but library e-book platforms contain so many barriers to use and access that patrons often turn away in frustration. In addition, aggregators’ e-book platforms often include intrusive, onerous digital rights management (DRM) restrictions. The traditional solution of DRM-free e-books are generally only available only in large and expensive publisher packages. One approach to solving these problems is an evidence-based selection of e-books program; it not only offers access to hundreds of DRM-free, unlimited simultaneous-user e-books that are integrated with similar e-journal content, but also includes an agreement that libraries will only purchase titles with …

DigitalCommons@UMaine launched as the University of Maine’s institutional repository in January 2012. Since that time, the collection has grown to over thirteen thousand (13,000) papers in more than seven hundred, sixty (760) disciplines; and has experienced over four hundred, ninety thousand (490,000) full-text downloads. This presentation discusses the framework for the success of DigitalCommons@UMaine as an institutional repository.

The document is presented in sections which reflect the different ingredients we consider are required for a successful shared print initiative. Each section discusses issues that shared print initiatives should consider and offers advice regarding addressing this issue. Alongside this (in italics) are the Maine Shared Collection Strategy’s own experiences in negotiating these issues, including the decisions we made and the alternatives we decided against.

Finding The Middle Ground In Collection Development: How Academic Law Librarians Can Shape Their Collections In Response To The Call For More Practice-Oriented Legal Education, Leslie A. Street, Amanda M. Runyon

To examine how academic law libraries can respond to the call for more practice-oriented legal education, the authors compared trends in collection management decisions regarding secondary sources at academic and law firm libraries. The results of their survey are followed by recommendations about how academic and firm librarians can work together to best provide law students with materials they will need in practice.
