The Cardinal Edge

Universities take pride in the research their school produces, as it demonstrates their dedication to advancing knowledge and pushing the boundaries of various fields, not just STEM. Research by definition is an inquiry using current sources to guide and establish new facts in any field of study. Undergraduate student research falls under this umbrella of advancement and is a critical component of the research culture at any institution. A research paper includes four important sections: the abstract, introduction, methods, and results section. Each section takes the audience through the steps implemented by the student to answer their research question and …

In order to best meet the information needs of users and gather as much visibility as possible, new platforms have been created and older platforms have been updated to improve usage. Because of these changes, engagement with newer, yet highly popular social media platforms such as TikTok has not been studied as widely as more traditional platforms such as Facebook. Additionally, post formats, character limits, and post content can vary greatly by platform. Comparing multiple social media platforms in this study allowed for a wider view of how …

Text Complexity In Selected Newbery Medal Winners, Stephanie N. Harrelson

SLIS Connecting

Children who read for pleasure, as well as for information, do so because they have first learned the simple mechanics of reading. Once the mechanics are in place, children seek out stories that are of interest to them. Reading engaging materials holds the interest of children. As readers encounter increasingly complex reading material, their comprehension and reading abilities increase. It is important that children's literature is not only entertaining, but also complex in age-appropriate ways (Juel, 1988).

This study looks at the text complexity of Newbery Medal winners. The books selected for this study cover a 100-year period (1922-2022). The …

Messy records as documents seem to have the power to make humans psychologically ill by becoming uneasy, discomfort, stressed, burnout, and uncomfortable, all of which are diseases. This is similar to documentality introduced by Frohmann that documents can enable, produce, encourage, permit, and influence a person to experience document disease. This paper uses a qualitative approach with data collection in the form of literature and surveys from Indonesian people. The perception of archivists and the general public in Indonesia concerning the cause of the “messy records” …

"Diversity Statements In Collection Development Policies In Libraries At Cccu Institutions: Applying Antiracism And Critical Theory To Academic Library Policies", Robin D. Lang

The Christian Librarian

The Council of Christian College and Universities (CCCU) has made diversity a major focus of the organization, but commitment to diversity among individual CCCU institutions and within their departments, such as academic libraries, varies. Diversity is a core value of the library profession and complements the CCCU’s commitment to diversity, yet despite this convergence of interests, a review of the literature indicates that nothing has been written about diversity initiatives within academic libraries at CCCU institutions. This study was devised to begin to fill this gap in the literature and, thus, starts to investigate racial diversity within Christian higher education …
