This analysis evaluates how PhillyHistory.org merged their unique special collection materials with geospatial-based progressive technology to challenge and educate the global community. A new generation of technologically savvy researchers has emerged that expect a more enhanced user experience than earlier generations. To meet these needs, collection managers are collaborating with community and local institutions to increase online access to materials; mixing best metadata practices with custom elements to create map mashups; and merging progressive GIS technology and geospatial based applications with their collections to enhance the user experience. The PhillyHistory.org website was analyzed to explore how they used various geospatial …

School of Information Student Research Journal
As smartphones become ubiquitous, they increasingly influence the way in which students seek and use information. It is important to understand emerging information behavior as a result of wide spread use of smartphones. This paper provides an overview of information behavior in the mobile environment. Gender differences in mobile information seeking are discussed. People interact with mobile information in varied and unpredictable locations or while in transit. Reconsidering Library Collections: Community Services As Documents, Deborah Turner
Reconsidering Library Collections: Community Services As Documents, Deborah Turner
Proceedings from the Document Academy
In recognition of on-going change in how information becomes available, this study focuses on urban public librarian practices for meeting information needs, especially those of users who prefer to talk when obtaining information. Interview and focus group data reveal how libraries meet those needs including through library collaborations with community service agencies. Analysis of that data makes it possible to note that librarians manage relations with these agencies similar to how they manage traditional library collections. A subsequent discussion considers how this observation impacts LIS education and current understanding of documents before concluding with recommendations for professional practice and for …

Wild Bill Hickok Gets His Kicks: Expanding Collection Development Through Intentional Collaboration., Dave Richards, Thomas A. Peters
Collaborative Librarianship
Various cultural memory institutions (academic libraries, history museums, public libraries, art museums, state agencies, even theme parks) in the metropolitan area around Springfield, Missouri, have been partnering and collaborating for decades in many ways. The collaboration was primarily intentional but at times organic or opportunistic, and revolved around a local history collection strategy. The collaborative efforts expanded geographically beginning with a local history museum and culminating with a partnership to document a legendary national highway from Chicago, Illinois, to Santa Monica, California. A shared central premise based on preserving and providing access to a city’s unique history and place has …
