The often invisible labor of serials, technical services, metadata, and electronic resources workers sits in the space between required and preferred, assessment and surveillance. Although libraries and information workers did not explicitly create the systems many of us live in, we are responsible for their everyday functioning. In many ways the narratives from technical services to the library are centered in objects: item counts, COUNTER stats, door counts, discovery, and other transactional data. The purpose of this roundtable presentation was to discuss the value or lack of value in tracking cataloging statistics; to query how other technical service departments are handling poor quality vendor records for electronic resources; and the stress of limited budgets and shrinking staff. The title of this discussion came from the book with the same title by Mary Beth Weber. Transitioning from OPAC to Primo is an extra challenge when the catalog is full of e-books and e-resources which date from before Primo. When you're part of a large consortium and there are multiple copies of those e-resource records in the catalog, the problem is compounded.

This presentation explains, for catalogers, the strategies used at CUNY to improve e-resource results in Primo (while keeping OPAC fans happy a little longer).

eResource access problems challenge electronic resources librari- ans and frustrate users. Challenges of using library systems can include information overload, links that do not work properly, incorrect metadata, and questionable relevance to search results. Nate Hosburgh, Electronic Resources Librarian at Montana State University, gave a presentation titled “A User-Centered Approach to Addressing Issues of Discoverability and Access” at the Mississippi State University Libraries’ eResource & Emerging Technologies Summit held in the Mitchell Memorial Library on August 2, 2013. Hosburgh spoke of lessons he and his team learned about troubleshooting eResources and his team’s approach to issues of discoverability and access.

Playaway devices were developed in 2005 by Findaway World LLC. (http://store.playawaydigital.com/). A Playaway is described as a “self-playing digital audio book” and is a device that contains a pre-loaded audio file in a proprietary format called ACELP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algebraic_Code_Excited_Linear_Prediction). The device requires one AAA battery and a set of earphones for playback and listening. Playaways contain almost exclusively spoken word recordings, but some musical content is available as well. According to the distributor, the focus of Playaways will remain audiobooks. Given the nature of a Playaway device, these materials include aspects of both sound recordings and electronic resources.
