Corporate Annual Reports: Supply & Demand, Alie Visser, Elizabeth Marshall

While libraries have been closed during the pandemic, we have had an increase in demand for our Annual Reports collection. Researchers may be spending more time searching the web or expanding the types of materials to explore in the research process. We've had to re-think how to supply reports that are only available in microfiche or in print storage. It has taken a combined effort to supply the reports. The pandemic has reinforced our desire to make digitized reports more accessible to our users and potentially more discoverable to a wider variety of users.

In the 1960s, a Louisville photography studio began donating its negatives, prints, and invoices to the University of Louisville Photographic Archives. The Caufield & Shook Collection remains a significant primary source for local history and a prime candidate for digitization. Unfortunately, on its receipt non-archivists processed the collection with little documentation of original order or organizational decision making. Additionally, workflow choices were determined largely by the desire to maximize student labor. A unique collection of English land indentures from the 16th to 20th centuries is at the center of a large undertaking at BYU’s Perry Special Collections. Born of a simple faculty digitization request, a much larger project with the potential to benefit other classes and researchers developed through the collaboration and coordination of multiple departments and individuals. Viewing History From The Sky: Geo-Rectification Of An Aerial Photography Collection, Kate F. Boyd

After years of looking for funding, in 2013 USC Libraries was awarded a grant from the Gaylord & Donnelly Foundation to scan and geo-rectify the South Carolina historical aerial photographs from 1930-1980s. This presentation, given at the Digital Library Federation Forum in 2016, documents the efforts to receive funding and the process of bring these photographs online for users. Thanks to Bill Sudduth of Government Information for his efforts in continuing this process.

The Open Parks Network serves the global parks community by providing the information, tools, and solutions to support the stewardship of the natural and cultural assets of protected areas. To date, over 350,000 items and 1.5 million pages of material has been digitized as part of this project. This presentation details the project's background and strategies used for digitization and metadata creation. Additionally, the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace Donor Card Collection project is detailed. This presentation was given at the Panhandle Library Access Network's (PLAN) Innovation Conference: Digitization- Preserving the Past for the Future Conference on August 14th, 2015. The presentation uses a specific collection of directories as a case study of the complications librarians and archivists face in digitizing older materials that may also be quite large, such as a directory. Prime OCR and Abbyy Fine Reader are discussed and their pros and cons covered. Troubleshooting and editing with Adobe Photoshop is also discussed.

Marc And Non-Marc Metadata For Digitized Government Documents, Kathryn Lybarger

University of Kentucky digitized materials from their chosen agency, the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The titles had already been cataloged in MARC, but they needed Dublin Core metadata for loading the data into their digital library, and also MARC for the new electronic versions, cataloging according to current RDA standards. In this talk, the presenter will describe their workflow, and some of the difficulties encountered along the way.

As part of its participation in the Google Books government documents scanning project, the Purdue University Libraries agreed to contribute volumes of the Congressional Serial Set (CSS). Realizing that the results would be far more useful if the individual documents within this title were cataloged separately, librarians developed procedures to create brief records and began cataloging CSS documents from the 1890s. The University of Iowa became a partner in this collaborative pilot project, and its cataloging staff used the Purdue template and procedures to create records from the CSS for individual documents from two years in the 1890s. …

The collection provides a view of the early days of colonization in the Santa Clara Valley and the growth of the mission culture.

A collaboration between the University of Louisville’s Dwight Anderson Music Library and Digital Initiatives Department has resulted in the digitization of the University of Louisville School of Music Guest Book. Begun in 1949, the book contains signatures and handwritten messages from many of the most well-known musicians of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. This article describes the approach to scanning, cataloging, indexing, and providing full-text searchable online access to the guest book using CONTENTdm digital media management software. It addresses resource and technical challenges encountered and overcome.

Cataloging The Congressional Serial Set, Aimée C. Quinn

Many librarians question the usefulness of the traditional cataloging of difficult historic sets in a time when more and more information moves either to the Internet or is digitized outright. One of the most challenging sets to catalog is the United States Congressional Serial Set, a 14,000+ (and growing) mega serial comprised of five monographic sub-series. The Congressional Serial Set is an anomaly since it is both monographic and serial in nature.
