A Revisionist History Of Andrew Carnegie’S Library Grants To Black Colleges, Shaundra Walker
Library Faculty Scholarship
Using Critical Race Theory (CRT) as an analytical framework, this chapter explores the development of libraries funded by Andrew Carnegie and later the Carnegie Corporation on the campuses of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). With particular emphasis on CRT's interest convergence tenet, the chapter illuminates both the motivations of these corporate philanthropies and the experiences of African Americans who negotiated with them to obtain library buildings for their campuses.
Seeing Library Data: A Prototype Data Visualization Application For Librarians, Mark E. Eaton
Seeing Library Data: A Prototype Data Visualization Application For Librarians, Mark E. Eaton
Publications and Research
Visualizations can add value to raw library data. Tools that programmatically make such visualizations interactive can further increase the value of this data, by giving librarians visual tools to analyze their data sets. To demonstrate these benefits, Kingsborough Community College Library built SeeCollections (http://b7jl.org/seecollections), a web application that visualizes our libraries’ collections of books and ebooks.
This article discusses the how SeeCollections gathers data from Kingsborough’s discovery layer API (Application Programming Interface), and transforms this data to create visualizations for the web. SeeCollections is a lightweight, proof-of-concept data application based on a vendor API. API data is often accessible in …

In 2016, our private four-year institution launched a new undergraduate housing model with the goal of providing more opportunities for intellectual engagement through social encounters among students, faculty, and staff. During the day, the campus is an intellectually-engaged community with free exchange of ideas among community members. The housing communities aim to extend this dynamic more fully into the student experience, after hours and outside of the classroom.
The Library’s mission is to foster intellectual growth by supporting excellence and innovation in education and research. We were enthusiastic about the potential both for improved student experience and for opportunities to …

Academic Libraries And Non-Academic Departments: A Survey And Case Studies On Liaising Outside The Box, Amy Wainwright, Chris Davidson
2017 Faculty Bibliography
Partnering with non-academic departments allows academic libraries to create new programming ideas and reach more students. According to the results of a national survey, academic librarians at institutions of all sizes are partnering with many different types of non-academic departments. These partnerships offer efficiencies through shared cost and staffing and offer additional benefits to all groups involved. This article identifies the non-academic departments that these libraries are partnering with, highlights potential events to raise awareness of services, and describes ways in which these partnerships help engage with students.

Instructional Design: Toolkits For Paraprofessional Staff And Graduate Assistants, Lora Del Rio
SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
After attending the 2012 ACRL Immersion Teacher Track Program in Burlington, Vermont, I had a greater understanding of how and why careful planning relates directly to student engagement and learning. Perhaps not quite as obvious is how instructional design (ID) corresponds to the confidence of an instructor. In order to meet the demands of our library instruction program, we rely on graduate teaching assistants and library paraprofessionals to teach the one-shot sessions requested by teaching faculty. However, these employees do not always come with teaching experience and they come from outside the library science discipline, so information literacy is many …

Humanities scholars have long claimed the importance of browsing in the library stacks as part of their research process. The digitization practices of libraries and archives, while meant to assist with preservation and access, make the physical browsing experience impossible. While there have been various attempts to recreate this experience online, none as yet has created a digital tool which users can interact with as they move through the physical material in the library. This paper aims to introduce the concept of the Serendipitous Tool for Augmenting Knowledge (STAK), a geolocative app that allows users to access material complementary to …

The Data Framework: A Collaborative Tool For Assessment At The Unlv Libraries, Starr Hoffman, Ashley Hernandez-Hall
The Data Framework: A Collaborative Tool For Assessment At The Unlv Libraries, Starr Hoffman, Ashley Hernandez-Hall
Library Faculty Publications
Keeping track of the data that academic libraries capture is a massive task. The University of Nevada - Las Vegas (UNLV) University Libraries developed a data framework as a tracking tool for data points. This framework is both a data dictionary and a manual that records data-gathering procedures. This ensures that the data is continually gathered and reported in the same way, and also ensures that institutional memory of those procedures is preserved, regardless of staff turnover. Additionally, the revised Data Framework, and the revision process, transformed staff attitudes about data reporting and strengthened the libraries' culture of assessment.

“There Is Nothing Inherently Mysterious About Assistive Technology”: A Qualitative Study About Blind User Experiences In Us Academic Libraries, Adina Mulliken
Publications and Research
Eighteen academic library users who are blind were interviewed about their experiences with academic libraries and the libraries’ websites using an open-ended questionnaire and recorded telephone interviews. The study approaches these topics from a user-centered perspective, with the idea that blind users themselves can provide particularly reliable insights into the issues and potential solutions that are most critical to them. Most participants used reference librarians’ assistance, and most had positive experiences. High-level screen reader users requested help with specific needs. A larger number of participants reported contacting a librarian because of feeling overwhelmed by the library website. In some cases, …

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
Special libraries often provide career searching support to their users. Career research has changed significantly over the past decade, as have the resources available to librarians and their patrons. Librarians at Purdue University’s Roland G. Parrish Library of Management and Economics have formed partnerships with other organizations across campus in order to share the cost of specialized career resources, streamline instruction, and best serve students. This article discusses how these cooperative relationships were formed, and also recommends specific specialized career resources that libraries providing career research assistance may want to consider.

Research on students’ educational experiences demonstrates the importance of a holistic understanding of the complexity of students’ lives in developing library programs, services, and resources that effectively address undergraduate needs. The “A Day in the Life” (ADITL) Project investigated a typical day for over 200 students at eight diverse higher education institutions in the US. Examining the local and individual expressions of student taskscapes – the ensemble of interrelated social activities across time and space – placed each student’s relationship to their library in a larger description of their academic and personal lives. By exploring the whole student experience, this …
Faculty Perceptions Of Teaching Information Literacy To First-Year Students: A Phenomenographic Study, Lorna M. Dawes
Faculty Perceptions Of Teaching Information Literacy To First-Year Students: A Phenomenographic Study, Lorna M. Dawes
UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications
This study examines faculty perceptions of teaching information literacy and explores the influence of these perceptions on pedagogy. The study adopted an inductive phenomenographic approach, using 24 semi-structured interviews with faculty teaching first-year courses at an American public research university. The results of the study reveal four qualitative ways in which faculty experience teaching information use to first year students that vary within three themes of expanding awareness. The resulting outcome space revealed that faculty had two distinct conceptions of teaching information literacy: (1) Teaching to produce experienced consumers of information, and (2) Teaching to cultivate intelligent participants in discourse …
