A Periodicals Librarian’S Role In Technical Services : Equalizing Access To Library Databases For The Disabled, Barbara M. Pope

Faculty Submissions

Equal access to library resources and services is vital to the successful learning of all students at higher education institutions. All academic libraries provide access to databases in support of the discovery and scholarship needs of the university or college. However, not all databases are equally accessible. Librarians at Pittsburg State University recognized the difficulties disabled students attending college have accessing resources and wanted to assist students and faculty by learning more and reducing barriers. An additional goal included aligning services with other campus resources geared towards disability services. The Student Disability Services department at PSU assists disabled students and …

Promoting Open Access Journals And Open Data To Your Scholarly Community For Maximum Impact, Barbara M. Pope

Faculty Submissions

Open access journals and open data provide researchers with information that would otherwise be behind a paywall. Both are growing exponentially and are widely used and cited by scholars. However, not all open access journals are respected, peer reviewed publications and should be evaluated prior to submitting research. Open data repositories allow researchers to deposit their data to promote it and make it available for others to access and use. Getting the word out about scholarly research is fundamental to other researchers to access it, and augments the possibility of citations and altmetrics scores. Come to this presentation to hear …

Meeting The Next Generation: A Cross-Campus Collaboration Via A Scholarship Workshop, Lora Winters, Ruth Monnier

Reaching high school students before they set foot on campus would allow writing centers to increase awareness of services while also making personal connections to students, which has been proven to increase student retention. Targeting these students can be difficult and expensive, but our writing center collaborated with library services and our admissions office to create a program about finding scholarship opportunities/writing scholarship essays that was inexpensive, targeted local high schools, and initial results indicate that this program is beneficial to our university’s recruitment efforts. We will discuss our findings and how this program could be replicated by other institutions.

Open Educational Resources (OER) are teaching, learning, and research materials that provide everyone with free permission to use. OER, which can include images, articles, videos and more, can lower barriers to accessing information. While OER is typically associated with academic libraries, there are many different kinds of openly licensed materials available, and many are applicable to other types of libraries. This session will cover what OER is, how OER can create a more inclusive and accessible environment, and ways OER might be used for programming and library needs.

Increasing The Accessibility Of Library Resources & Services For Improved Discovery In The Classroom, Barbara M. Pope

Equitable access to education for students with disabilities is not just a good idea, it is the law. However, all students benefit from having multiple possible ways to learn. I believe the same holds true for library services and resources. However, making courses and library resources and services is easier to imagine than it is to do. Come to this presentation to hear about what I learned in the ADA & Web Accessibility Self-Paced Workshop from Online Learning Consortium and how I have improved the accessibility of library resources and services.

Accessibility to library resources and services in academic libraries is fundamental to

serving the discovery and scholarship needs of all students and faculty, whether they have disabilities or not. Equitable access in higher education can affect student grades and retention, but accessibility touches many different areas in library services, including making the physical building accessible, as well as instructional materials, the library’s website, Libguides, and library resources to those with vision, physical, and cognitive disabilities. Accessibility is vital for students with disabilities to obtain a college degree and complies with federal law. However, it also improves access to higher education …

How do you reimagine an over 30-year annual event in the world of COVID-19? Pittsburg State University (PSU) Library Services needed to transform their longest ongoing traditional program, University Authors Reception, in 2020. Advantages And Challenges Of Open Access Resources During Covid-19 And Beyond, Barbara M. Pope

Faculty Submissions

The COVID-19 pandemic taught librarians that we needed to up our game of providing access to needed resources to serve patrons’ needs even while our physical buildings were shuttered last year. Some vendors and publishers offered deals to libraries to convert their print book purchases or journal subscriptions to online; however, not all libraries had funds to do this. Other publishers offered free access to part or all of their resources to libraries, and some are continuing to do so even though some libraries have returned to more normal operations. Open access resources have been around for years, and allow …

It has long been a librarian role to provide access to books, serials, and media, as well as library instruction to support learning and access to information, whether in a K-12 school, college or university, or public library.
