Academic libraries have long had print journals to support the university’s discovery and research needs. However, academic libraries are challenged with needs for relevant content, cost control, and space availability, and some have downsized their print journal collections as a result. Many academic libraries are replacing or supplementing print journal subscriptions with online subscriptions and open access journals. Print journal collection development has long been one of the traditional roles of academic librarians. However, in the last 20 years or so, print journal ownership has declined and online journal access has taken its place; both due to growing concerns with flat or declining budgets as well as a lack of space and the need to repurpose this limited space.
