Collaborative Strategic Planning: A Wiki Application, Susan L. Kendall, Mary H. Nino, Shannon M. Staley
Shannon M. Staley
For the past several years, many have viewed wikis as useful tools for community building and collaboration. A number of free Web services such as PBwiki have claimed convenience and ease of use as part of their overall packages. Areview of the literature reveals a great deal of anecdotal support for wiki use in the workplace. However, few studies have been conducted to determine whether wikis are useful collaborative tools for employees within an organization. This case study will examine the use of a wiki by library employees during the strategic planning process at San Jose State University.
Forums For Citizen Journalists? Adoption Of User Generated Content Initiatives By Online News Media, Neil J. Thurman
Forums For Citizen Journalists? Adoption Of User Generated Content Initiatives By Online News Media, Neil J. Thurman
Neil Thurman
The mainstream online news media face accusations of being slow to respond to so-called 'grassroots' or 'citizen journalism', which uses the world wide web, and in particular blogs and wikis, to publish and promote independent news-related content. This article argues that the adaptation of established news websites to the increasing demand from readers for space to express their views is driven as much by local organizational and technical conditions as it is by any attachment to traditional editorial practices. The article uses qualitative research interviews with the editors and managing editors of nine major British news websites to reveal the …

Your Library Instruction Is In Another Castle: The Development Of Information Literacy Based Video Games At Carnegie Mellon Univeristy Or How To Make A Library Arcade, Daniel R. Hood
Daniel R Hood
Being part of an institution possessing a world-renowned computer science school and a reputation for developing innovative new technologies, the University Libraries at Carnegie Mellon were motivated to explore a new method of information literacy instruction. This method was to be the creation of a web-based video game. Through a $50,000 grant from the Buhl Foundation, awarded in the Spring of 2006, the University Libraries began developing a series of “web-based instructional modules." [1] The University Libraries soon formed a representative group of three librarians, selfdubbed the Library Arcade (LA) Committee, to help define how to best transmute the goals …

The need to assess students’ understanding of information literacy competencies has become critical to determining the effectiveness of library instruction. This is particularly true at San Jose State University, where measurement tools are not uniformly applied. Currently, many online achievement tests measure student competence at a general rather than course-specific level. This project proposes the development of an application that enables librarians to create assessment tools matching specific learning objectives of individual courses. Preliminary findings will be shared at information literacy conferences, where experts convene to exchange ideas. Harvesting feedback, the application will be further developed through additional grant funding.

Recruiting For Diversity: Strategies For 21st Century Research Librarianship, Barbara I. Dewey, Jillian Keally
Barbara I. Dewey
Academic libraries, especially research libraries, are recognizing the benefits and importance of recruiting librarians from diverse backgrounds. The imperative for diversity in higher education and, therefore, in its libraries, provides the context for outlining strategies to recruiting the best and brightest librarians from underrepresented groups. Creative efforts at the national professional organizational level to recruit broadly and effectively are making a difference in widening the pipeline at the entry-level and at higher position levels. In many cases research libraries are campus leaders for diversity initiatives including recruitment and for good reason. This paper will lay out strategies for robust diversity …
Partners Of Equals – Libraries “Mixing Molecules” Successfully With Private Organizations, Win Shih
Partners Of Equals – Libraries “Mixing Molecules” Successfully With Private Organizations, Win Shih
Win Shih
Libraries and information services have a long history of forming joint ventures or partnerships with private organizations to advance services and resources. Such alliances at once boost and boast competitive advantages as described by Professor Michael Porter of Harvard Business School, including maximization of individual resources, access to collective technology and skilled human assets otherwise prohibitively expensive and precarious to obtain solo, along with minimization of operating expenses as well as minimization of risk.
Furthermore, within such close-knit and symbiotic relationships, participants share information and expertise freely and fluidly. Information, innovation, knowledge and technologies are transferred efficiently amongst participants within …

Towards A Business Model For Cellular Network And Telecommunication Operators: A Theoretical Framework, Mutaz M. Al-Debei, Ramzi El-Haddadeh, David Avison
Dr. Mutaz M. Al-Debei
Cellular networks and telecommunications bring major change to the way businesses are conducted. Mobility has become one of the main priorities for users and this has impacted on cellular networks and telecommunication operators (CNTOs). However, entrants into the cellular industry have been confounded primarily by inexistent or weak Business Models (BMs). Designing a BM for a CNTO is complex and requires multiple actors to balance different and often conflicting design requirements. Nevertheless, most research about CNTOs has been technically oriented and has mainly addressed the technological and engineering issues related to their infrastructure. Less attention has been given to the …

Defining The Business Model In The New World Of Digital Business, Mutaz M. Al-Debei, Ramzi El-Haddadeh, David Avison
Dr. Mutaz M. Al-Debei
Recent rapid advances in ICTs, specifically in Internet and mobile technologies, have highlighted the rising importance of the Business Model (BM) in Information Systems (IS). Despite agreement on its importance to an organization’s success, the concept is still fuzzy and vague, and there is no consensus regarding its definition. Furthermore, understanding the BM domain by identifying its meaning, fundamental pillars, and its relevance to other business concepts is by no means complete. In this paper we aim to provide further clarification by first presenting a classification of definitions found in the IS literature; second, proposing guidelines on which to develop …

This panel focuses on an information-rich yet under-examined space: the office. Offices are complex crossroads of information structures, information systems, and information seeking behaviors, all shaped by a particular socio-historical context. The panel brings together experts from major specialties of information science (IS) who have conducted research into offices or similar settings. Our goals are threefold: 1.) To introduce “the office” as a useful concept for information research 2.) To examine the office from five different perspectives in the field of IS, namely: history, metatheory, information seeking behavior, classification, and information systems. 3.) To promote cross-specialty conversations among panelists and …

Given the large variety of resources available online, learning foreign languages has become ubiquitous. A significant amount of reliable and free information is available in Hungarian from trustworthy sources, which provide instant language learning material with expert help. Opportunities to improve language skills also include copious casual online communities, where cultural diversity is reality. Using electronic resources for second language acquisition draws attention to critical thinking and evaluation skills in a unique, non-native language setting in the classroom and outside. Despite the lack of the orientation offered by conventional URL extensions on American web sites (edu, com, org, gov), it …
Validation Of Programmes Of Higher Education In Ireland - The Role Of The Higher Education And Training Awards Council, Deirdre Lillis, Tara Ryan
Validation Of Programmes Of Higher Education In Ireland - The Role Of The Higher Education And Training Awards Council, Deirdre Lillis, Tara Ryan
Deirdre Lillis
This paper considers the programme validation arrangements in place in one half of the Irish higher education sector. It outlines how responsibility for programme validation can be safely delegated to Institutions within a robust overarching framework for quality assurance. It compares programme validation in Institutions with self awarding status with Institutions that have their programmes validated by a national Awarding agency. The paper concludes that when programme validation in Ireland and (potentially) across Europe is examined more closely, processes that appear to be very different on the surface can be quite similar in reality. From a philosophical perspective it appears …

The Institutional Repository Rediscovered: What Can A University Do For Open Access Publishing?
The Institutional Repository Rediscovered: What Can A University Do For Open Access Publishing?
Jean-Gabriel Bankier
Universities have always been one of the key players in open access publishing and have encountered the particular obstacle that faces this Green model of open access, namely, disappointing author uptake. Today, the university has a unique opportunity to reinvent and reinvigorate the model of the institutional repository. This article explores what is not working about the way we talk about repositories to authors today and how we can better meet faculty needs. More than an archive, a repository can be a showcase that allows scholars to build attractive scholarly profiles, and a platform to publish original content in emerging …

The Sister Libraries Partnership Program: A Carnegie Mellon University Libraries Pilot Project, Daniel R. Hood
Daniel R Hood
In 2005 the Carnegie Mellon University Libraries received a grant from the Eden Hall Foundation called Information Literacy for the Region. A key aspect of this grant encourages collaboration between Carnegie Mellon University Libraries and local school and public libraries on information literacy initiatives. An Information Literacy Fellow position was created to plan and administer these initiatives. Ideas for collaborative activities spawned from a focus group discussion held at Carnegie Mellon in summer 2006. Western Pennsylvania School Librarians Association members and Carnegie Mellon librarians got together to discuss how to foster interest in local, grass roots information literacy projects. Lack …

Research In The Biotech Age: Can Informational Privacy Compete?, Wilhelm Peekhaus
Wilhelm Peekhaus
This paper examines the privacy of personal medical information in the health research context. Arguing that biomedical research in Canada has been caught up in the government’s broader neo-liberal policy agenda that has positioned biotechnology as a strategic driver of economic growth, the author discusses the tension between informational privacy and the need for medical information for research purposes. Consideration is given to the debate about whether privacy for medical information serves or hinders the ‘public good’ in respect of medical research, and to discussions of informed consent as an element of ‘fair information practices’ designed to safeguard the privacy …
Personal Health Information In Canada: A Comparison Of Citizen Expectations And Legislation, Wilhelm Peekhaus
Personal Health Information In Canada: A Comparison Of Citizen Expectations And Legislation, Wilhelm Peekhaus
Wilhelm Peekhaus
This paper explores whether the Canadian legislative protections in place to safeguard medical privacy meet the expectations of Canadians. An overview of current governance systems designed to protect the privacy of personal health information at both the federal and provincial levels is first presented. This is followed by an empirical analysis of the results of a public opinion survey conducted to determine Canadian attitudes about medical privacy, particularly genetic privacy. The analysis highlights areas where legislation and public opinion converge and diverge.
