Library Faculty and Staff Papers and Presentations

For libraries who embrace patron-driven acquisitions, the workflows of ILL, Acquisitions, and Collection Development are becoming more interdependent. Workflows that are traditionally siloed in different systems impede the efficient provision of library materials. The Getting It System Toolkit for ILLiad (http://www.gistlibrary.org/) provides an elegant solution to this problem.

This report presents a case study of school library programs in two rural counties in Western China. Since 2002, the libraries of Tianzhu and Tongwei high schools have undertaken a series of outreach initiatives to improve local residents’ access to information and to address their cultural and educational needs. Over the past decade, both school libraries have played a leading role in improving the quality of life and enhancing the information literacy of local residents. Tianzhu No. 1 High School Library 天祝一中图书馆—which serves a large Tibetan and other minority populations—has gained a reputation for its oral history of local culture …

Mining For Gold: Identifying The Librarians' Toolkit For Managing Hybrid Open Access: Based On A Paper Presented At The 36th Uksg Annual Conference, Bournemouth, April 2013, Jill Emery

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations

In 2012, the author and colleagues surveyed eight publishers that had been involved with the Publishing and the Ecology of European Research (PEER) project to learn about the state of hybrid journal publishing. At the same time, one of the key questions asked to a panel of librarians at the International Association of Scientific, Technical & Medical Publishers May 2012 Meeting was what role librarians would play if scholarly publishing shortly went open access (OA) across the board? From the survey of the market, and the rapid OA developments in the UK and EU that include hybrid OA, a picture …

Senior Design Theses: Moving To An Electronic Collection By Collaborating With The School Of Engineering, Susan K. Boyd May 2013

Senior Design Theses: Moving To An Electronic Collection By Collaborating With The School Of Engineering, Susan K. Boyd

Staff publications, research, and presentations

For years, the University Library served as a literal “storage room” for the latest ten years of printed senior design or capstone theses. Both the receiving and cataloging of student undergraduate work were at best “spotty,” and incomplete. By working with the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies, and departmental administrative assistants, the library and the School of Engineering developed a new process for electronic submission of these documents, and this in turn resulted in the creation of the University Library’s institutional repository called “Scholar Commons.” The first collection within Scholar Commons will showcase the senior design theses. To inform students …

Discovery On A Budget: Improved Searching Without A Web-Scale Discovery Product, Chris Bulock, Lynnette Fields Apr 2013

Discovery On A Budget: Improved Searching Without A Web-Scale Discovery Product, Chris Bulock, Lynnette Fields

SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Discovery is a key component of a library's services, and user expectation are high. Even if a Web-scale discovery system is not in the cards, there is plenty a library can do to improve discovery for their users. Librarians at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville have conducted a series of user studies focused on discovery tasks using the library's website and catalog. The lessons learned fro these studies have led to an ongoing redesign of the library's web-site as well as recommendations for instruction. This paper shares successful strategies for evaluating and improving discovery, no expensive software or programming skills necessary.

Cultivating A Special Collection: How The Personal Touch Can Sow The Seeds For A Major Acquisition, Sue Lynn Mcdaniel, Nancy Richey

SCL Faculty and Staff Publications

Introduction:

Serendipity is often the best friend of special collections librarians. Sharing our passion for history and preservation can create happy accidents, connecting us with the caretakers of the remnants of past generations. In fact, libraries come to acquire many cultural treasures, often discovered in the contents of someone's attic, basement, or storage space, because we nurtured a relationship with a potential collector over time.

UNL Libraries: White Papers

The C. Y. Thompson (CYT) Library enjoys a location central to east campus. This creates an ideal setting for CYT to serve as a hub for activities of all kinds. And, based upon the feedback from online surveys and face-to-face focus groups, there is no shortage of interest and ideas for how CYT can become the premier gathering place on UNL’s east campus for users from all backgrounds. In spite of this, the primary question needing to be addressed is ‘what is C. Y. Thompson’? Is it a building? Is it a library? Is it something entirely different? The task …

At The Desk, John C. Hill Mar 2013

At The Desk, John C. Hill

Blogging the Library

During the past few weeks of my internship, I've spent time providing research consultations at the Reference Desk. I initially sat with a librarian during my shift, but I’m now working independently. Since then, I have fielded questions about gender roles in high school guidance offices, the invasive nature of the lionfish species, and the causes of industrialization in early modern Spain. The impact of the two journals was also analyzed in terms of SSCI subject categories. This study could provide useful information for collection development librarians interested in the social sciences.

Public Or Private? Reconsidering Ownership And Value Of State Legislators’ Papers, Brian Keough, Elizabeth A. Novara Jan 2013

Public Or Private? Reconsidering Ownership And Value Of State Legislators’ Papers, Brian Keough, Elizabeth A. Novara

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

Unlike congressional and presidential papers collections, which have a rich archival literature in support of their acquisition and management, archivists and researchers frequently overlook and undervalue state legislators’ papers. One reason for undervaluing state legislators’ papers is the lack of legal guidelines in most states for ownership of these political papers. This article presents the results of a broad survey of state laws and collecting policies within state archives regarding the collecting of state legislators’ papers. Overall, archivists, lawmakers, and the general public need to become more aware of the value of state legislators’ papers, pass laws that protect and …

Open Source Assessment Of Academic Library Patron Satisfaction, Katelyn Angell Jan 2013

Open Source Assessment Of Academic Library Patron Satisfaction, Katelyn Angell

Brooklyn Library Faculty Publications

Purpose – While academic libraries have often purchased proprietary software to assess patron satisfaction, the open source movement has generated high-quality software available free of charge. These tools are useful alternatives in an era marked by tremendous budget cuts familiar to many academic libraries. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the ability of open source software to effectively and affordably measure the quality of service at academic libraries.

Design/methodology/approach – The author’s experience with using the open source tool LimeSurvey to administer a library survey over a three-year period serves as a case study for other institutions. A …
