More Or Less?: Telling The Library's Story Through The Academic Program Review, John H. Barnett

Faculty and Staff Publications

Academic libraries regularly provide information to support the accreditation, certification, and periodic review of degree programs. The library portion of the academic program review has traditionally focused on detailing the number of titles and volumes of books in the collection, the age of the collection, and the amount of money the library spends to support the degree program. Employing a "more instead of less" approach, the USC Upstate library uses both narrative and data about collections, services, and initiatives to share the library's story.

This presentation explores what prompted our change in focus and the variety of information we provide. …

The Budget Proposal As A Constructive Collections Engagement Tool And Practice, Evan Rusch, Pat Lienemann, Heidi J. Southworth, Nat Gustafson-Sundell

Library Services Publications

At Minnesota State University Mankato (MNSU), our story might sound familiar. After more than a decade of flat or decreased budgets, we have cancelled hundreds of journal subscriptions and numerous journal packages. We do occasionally add journals, but only by cancelling others. We often say we are “managing library decline,” and our primary objective is to cut cleanly and accurately, so that we can continue to support accreditation and an evolving curriculum. Over the years, we have developed various tools to guide our cuts and we have demonstrated these at NASIG and elsewhere. These tools have also served for collection …

Are We Relying On The Wrong Data? Analysis Of E-Journal Usage Data At Seven R1 And R2 Research Universities, Simon Robins

Roesch Library Faculty Publications

Using data from seven R1 and R2 universities in Ohio, this study seeks to determine the extent of usage of full-text e-journal articles stored across multiple platforms. Specifically, COUNTER 5 data is presented from five major academic journal publishers (Taylor & Francis, SAGE, Oxford, Wiley, and Springer), looking at usage within each of the publishers’ respective platforms, as well as in EBSCO, JSTOR, and OhioLINK’s Electronic Journal Center platform. The overarching goal of the analysis is to identify where exactly usage occurred for this e-journal content within the different platforms, especially in cases where an individual title has duplicate full-text …

Demystifying Shibboleth: Adapting To Web Browser Privacy Changes, Simon Robins, Ben Daigle Mar 2024

Demystifying Shibboleth: Adapting To Web Browser Privacy Changes, Simon Robins, Ben Daigle

Roesch Library Faculty Publications

University of Dayton Libraries added Shibboleth as an additional form of authentication for its licensed e-resources beginning in summer 2023. A major impetus for pursuing Shibboleth are the upcoming web browser changes that will obfuscate users’ IP addresses, set to occur in later 2023 and 2024 and something which will likely disrupt on-campus IP range access via EZproxy. Implementation of Shibboleth for an initial round of fifty-five e-resource platforms was relatively quick as a result of the University of Dayton’s participation in the InCommon Federation of U.S. higher education institutions, also known as an “authentication federation.” Methods for achieving the …

When it comes to public libraries, they face greater challenges in meeting the requirements of their increasingly diverse readership. The present study is an attempt to analyze the awareness and usage of the information sources and services offered by the D.V.G. public library, Kolar. Subject-Package Measures To Understand The Value Provided By Journal Packages, Heidi J. Southworth, Evan Rusch, Nat Gustafson-Sundell Feb 2024

Subject-Package Measures To Understand The Value Provided By Journal Packages, Heidi J. Southworth, Evan Rusch, Nat Gustafson-Sundell

Library Services Publications

At Minnesota State University Mankato (MNSU), we have been exploring new Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for journal packages. Most recently, we started developing subject-package measures as a category, including as a measure of utility or as a measure of supply. Although we could previously combine filters per subject and per package, this caused us to narrow data to a single subject. Now, we can display the results for all subjects and packages as one table, which empowers us to make comparisons easily, to understand the value we gain from our packages better, and to see any subject impacts of cancellations …

Making Love Easier: Automating Communication For Better Relationship Building For Web Archives, Emily Collier

2024 R&I Day

Starting in Fall of 2023, Ruth Bryan and Emily Collier began researching sustainability for the Web Archiving Program, which led them to building communication channels with the University of Kentucky Office of Public Relations and Marketing Web Content Development group. By tightening this channel, we hope to initiate the archival mindset right at the moment of content creation, as well as limit gaps in our web archives collection as the PR team is directly involved in monitoring sites that go live and expire. Part of this tightening of communication has been finding ways to automate alerts when changes are made …

Genrefication In Secondary School Libraries, Lindsay E. Pulsipher Jan 2024

Genrefication In Secondary School Libraries, Lindsay E. Pulsipher

School of Information Sciences Student Scholarship

Most school libraries organize fiction books alphabetically by an author’s last name. In order for a student to find and compare potential fiction reading material, the traditional school library model would have the student either search the library system for the topic and then go from stack to stack looking for books about the topic from any number of locations or seek advice from school library staff who would direct the student to potential titles as part of a reader’s advisory. In an effort to make fiction book selection easier for students, some school librarians have turned to genrefied fiction …
