Details about the major eBook lending platforms for academic libraries, eBook lending platform characteristics, why and how an academic library would license one, and finally what the future of this rapidly changing environment may hold are explained in this article.

Finding Grandpa's Patent: Using Patent Information For Historical Or Genealogical Research, Jan Comfort
Jan Comfort
Hardly a week goes by without a phone call, an e-mail message, or a visit from a patron who is looking for a patent issued to a family member. Often, the patron does not have complete information, and sometimes has nothing more than a name and a notion that Grandpa once invented something. This article describes some strategies that can be used by Librarians to assist patrons in historical patent research. It, additionally, includes a list of sources and highlights special materials that are available at Patent and Trademark Depository Libraries.

University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports
Under this three-year project, funded in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), libraries will collaborate to make decisions about the storage, retention, and preservation of print materials (both books and journals) as well as look for ways to integrate digital editions into a state-wide catalog. This will help alleviate space concerns while ensuring that users continue to have equal or greater access to the information.
The project’s goals are:
- To develop a strategy for a statewide, multi-type library program for managing, storing and preserving print collections among public and private institutions to achieve greater efficiencies and …

Digital World Of Information: An Overview Of Digital Library, Hirdyesh Kumar Singh
Hirdyesh Kumar Singh
Digital libraries have become of increasing significance in recent years, developing in functionality and content, and becoming accessible to a wider community of users. The digital library will provide a seamless environment where the co-operative access, filtering, manipulation, generation, and preservation of these documents will be supported as a continuous cycle. Users of the library will be both consumers and producers of information, either by themselves or in collaborations with other users. The realization of these new digital libraries requires both the provision of a new technology and a change in the role played by the libraries in the information …

The goal of this poster is to provide new librarians or information professionals in the medical and health science field with some ideas, tools and resources to be successful. Some new librarians do not have an extensive background in medical or health sciences and may feel overwhelmed when working with veteran health professionals. The outcome for viewers is to gather new ideas in four key areas of medical and health librarianship: instruction, collection development, research collaboration with faculty, and professional development. Ideas that contribute to success for new librarians include discussion, sharing personal experiences, mentorship, and research collaborations. An outcome …

Understanding cooperative print archives (CPA) requires understanding both CPAs’ characteristics and the various combinations in which these characteristics manifest in specific programs. As we better understand the nature of CPAs, we can better articulate the needs, wants, and challenges Tennessee faces in regards to creating a shared, statewide, print archive collection.

For libraries who embrace patron-driven acquisitions, the workflows of ILL, Acquisitions, and Collection Development are becoming more interdependent. Workflows that are traditionally siloed in different systems impede the efficient provision of library materials. The Getting It System Toolkit for ILLiad (http://www.gistlibrary.org/) provides an elegant solution to this problem.

A Km-Based Strategic, Global Current Awareness Service, Stuart Basefsky
Stuart Basefsky
This presentation focuses on a global current awareness service designed to meet the knowledge needs of the institution from which it originates. In so doing, it also meets the needs of journalists, researchers, faculty, students, professional practitioners, and policymakers concerned with the same issues globally. It provides the institutional links between partnering institutions that sustain the relationships for the future. This serves as a model for how libraries can become supporting pillars of their organizations by tapping into and meeting KM needs.

This report presents a case study of school library programs in two rural counties in Western China. Since 2002, the libraries of Tianzhu and Tongwei high schools have undertaken a series of outreach initiatives to improve local residents’ access to information and to address their cultural and educational needs. Mining For Gold: Identifying The Librarians' Toolkit For Managing Hybrid Open Access: Based On A Paper Presented At The 36th Uksg Annual Conference, Bournemouth, April 2013, Jill Emery
Library Faculty Publications and Presentations
In 2012, the author and colleagues surveyed eight publishers that had been involved with the Publishing and the Ecology of European Research (PEER) project to learn about the state of hybrid journal publishing. At the same time, one of the key questions asked to a panel of librarians at the International Association of Scientific, Technical & Medical Publishers May 2012 Meeting was what role librarians would play if scholarly publishing shortly went open access (OA) across the board? From the survey of the market, and the rapid OA developments in the UK and EU that include hybrid OA, a picture …
