Profiling Arson, Katarina Fritzon, Rebekah Doley, Ryan Bell

Ryan Bell

Overview: Criminal psychological profiling is the forensic technique of inferring personal, psychological, demographic, and behavioral characteristics of offenders based on crime scene evidence. While the majority of research concerning criminal pro-filing has been focused on the investigation of crimes of sexual violence such as murder and rape, criminal psychological profiling is frequently described as being applicable to the investigation of serial arson crimes, and the frequency with which psychological profiling has been used in the investigation of arson crimes has been growing steadily over the past 30 years (Drabsch 2004; Kocsis 2004, 2006; Turvey1999). This current entry reviews the growing …

Your Friends And Neighbors: Localized Economic Development And Criminal Activity, Matthew Freedman, Emily Owens Mar 2014

Your Friends And Neighbors: Localized Economic Development And Criminal Activity, Matthew Freedman, Emily Owens

Matthew Freedman

We exploit a sudden shock to demand for a subset of low-wage workers generated by the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) program in San Antonio, Texas to identify the effects of localized economic development on crime. We use a difference-in-difference methodology that takes advantage of variation in BRAC’s impact over time and across neighborhoods. We find that appropriative criminal behavior increases in neighborhoods where a fraction of residents experienced increases in earnings. This effect is driven by residents who were unlikely to be BRAC beneficiaries, implying that criminal opportunities are important in explaining patterns of crime.

The author here focuses on the issue of race--its significance in the trial and how it affected the advocacy of the lawyers. She discusses the emotional conflicts over race within the defense and prosecution teams and compares and contrasts the approaches that each side ultimately decided to take. The author …

The Contribution Of Dynamic Risk Factors To The Predictive Validity Of The Ohio Risk Assessment Instrument Community Supervision Tool, Charlene Taylor-Kindrick, Matthew Makarios Mar 2012

The Contribution Of Dynamic Risk Factors To The Predictive Validity Of The Ohio Risk Assessment Instrument Community Supervision Tool, Charlene Taylor-Kindrick, Matthew Makarios

Charlene Y. Taylor

The use of dynamic risk factors to predict recidivism is important because it is argued that static factors cannot adequately account for changes in that occur in risk over time. This research tests this argument by examining the improvement in predictive accuracy when dynamic risk factors are added to the criminal history scale in the ORAS community supervision tool. Results and implications will be discussed.
