Framework For Examining The Economic Feasibility Of Small Scale Alcohol Plants, Thomas Dobbs, Randy Hoffman, Ardelle Lundeen

Economics Staff Paper Series

The feasibility of producing fuel alcohol from grain has received much attention from the Midwest and Plains States over the last few years. There has been interest in plants ranging from quite small on farm stills to very large, fuel-feed complexes costing many millions of dollars. As a result of this interest, several studies of the economic feasibility of large-scale fuel alcohol plants were conducted and published in the late 1970. More recently, a few studies of the economics of smaller-scale plants have been initiated, and some of the results are now beginning to appear in print (Hutchinson and Dobbs; …

Taxpayers Rights Amendment: A Sequel To Dakota Proposition?, Philip Favero

Economics Staff Paper Series

During their campaign against Dakota Proposition, some of the opponents to that proposed constitutional amendment indicated their interest in a substitute measure to limit taxes in South Dakota. The substitute would involve, they stated, tying South Dakota taxes to the rate of inflation. An example of this kind of measure know as the Taxpayer's Rights Amendment" has been written and may be presented as a petition to change the South Dakota Constitution in a future general election. This Staff Paper includes a brief introductory analysis of the "Taxpayer's Rights Amendment." Suggestions for future research are also offered should the proposed …

Women And Handicrafts: Myth And Reality, Jasleen Dhamija Jan 1981

Women And Handicrafts: Myth And Reality, Jasleen Dhamija

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This issue of SEEDS reviews handicrafts as a means of providing income to women. In some instances, crafts are a solid source of income and can also provide women with a link to their own cultural heritage. In most instances, however, crafts production concentrates women in an area that is labor intensive and exploitative, providing a meager income for long hours of work. Handicrafts can be a means of increasing income for women in some settings, but only under the conditions outlined in this report, since crafts are specialized activities which have limited markets and offer limited potential as a …
