Countermessaging Isis: Grusin's Premediation And The Curious Case Of Islamic State (Ppt Presentation), Athina Karatzogianni

Athina Karatzogianni

Research on reporting war and security has benefited greatly form Grusin's Premediation: Affect and Mediality After 9/11 (2010). Here I employ his concepts in combination with my own cyberconflict theory to examine the mediatization of Islamic State in the social media battleground. Deliberation, propaganda, recruitment and mobilization through social media networks on the Islamic State (IS) by the various protagonists, including IS itself, point to a construction of discourse in commercial platforms which creates ethical issues surrounding security, surveillance and problems government and commercial actors face in responding to the group's media activities. Premediation on the part of all parties …

Superman Needs You, Kirby Farrell

kirby farrell

A powerful leader in politics, business, or closer to home has “magnetism.” But leaders depend on followers, who follow because it’s rewarding. Consider the attention commanded by Donald Trump or even Adolf Hitler. Lives depend on it. Both figures use scripts centered on elimination of scapegoats as a technique of converting flight to fight emergency physiology in followers. Close attention can demytify euphemized homicidal ideation.

Digital Australia 2016 (Da16), Jeffrey Brand, Stewart Todhunter

Jeffrey Brand

Digital Australia 2016 is the sixth iteration of empirical studies about demographics, self-report behaviours and attitudes around digital games. The current research is based on 1,274 households and 3,398 individuals of all ages living in those households. Adult participants responded to 80 questions about themselves and on behalf of all members of their households. The result reveals that 68% of the Australian population plays, although the proportion varies by age group. Predictably, 91% of children aged 5-14 play. However, the proportion of older adults aged 65 and over who play is as great as young children between ages of one …

Video Creation Tools For Language Learning: Lessons Learned, Vickie Marre Karasic, Anu Vedantham Jun 2015

Video Creation Tools For Language Learning: Lessons Learned, Vickie Marre Karasic, Anu Vedantham

Vickie M Karasic

Video creation tools—from Skype to PowerPoint to iMovie—have become increasingly popular conduits for foreign language teaching and learning. In flipped-classroom and blended-learning models, video enables faculty to move routine language concepts (i.e., grammar and vocabulary) outside the classroom, leaving more in-class time for live engagement with teacher and classmates. This chapter discusses lessons learned and new data collected at the University of Pennsylvania Libraries’ Weigle Information Commons on video’s effectiveness in various language learning contexts. Data collected includes reflections on several years of course observations, interviews with language faculty members, and a campus-wide survey to gauge student perspectives on video’s …

The Creation Of Chronicity: An Institutional Case Study Of Social Policy And Severe Retardation In The Progressive Era, Philip Ferguson Jun 2015

The Creation Of Chronicity: An Institutional Case Study Of Social Policy And Severe Retardation In The Progressive Era, Philip Ferguson

Philip M. Ferguson

The theme of this volume is emerging issues in disability studies. To the extent that disability studies is a relatively new field, new issues are constantly emerging and the discipline could hardly be characterized as in a state of "normal science," to borrow a phrase from Thomas Kuhn. Too, since the field of disability studies is interdisciplinary, new issues constantly emerge as researchers synthesize concepts and approaches from various more traditional disciplines (e.g., sociology, political science, psychology, law).

Juries And Social Media: A Report Prepared For The Victorian Department Of Justice, Jane Johnston, Patrick Keyzer, Geoffry Holland, Mark Pearson, Sharon Rodrick, Anne Wallace Apr 2015

Juries And Social Media: A Report Prepared For The Victorian Department Of Justice, Jane Johnston, Patrick Keyzer, Geoffry Holland, Mark Pearson, Sharon Rodrick, Anne Wallace

Anne Wallace Professor

Introduction: It is a fundamental principle of law that an accused has a right to a fair trial. An incident of this right is that information relating to prior convictions of an accused should not be made available to the jury as it may bias their verdict. In our legal system, this principle has traditionally been underpinned by the common law offence of sub judice contempt of court. It is also reinforced by legislation, in each State and Territory, which makes it an offence for a juror to enquire about a person who is a party to a trial or …

Internet Architecture, Freedom Of Expression And Social Responsibility: Critical Realism And Proposals For A Better Future, Raphael Cohen-Almagor Apr 2015

Internet Architecture, Freedom Of Expression And Social Responsibility: Critical Realism And Proposals For A Better Future, Raphael Cohen-Almagor

raphael cohen-almagor

The article opens by explaining the architecture of the Internet. Given its present raison d'être, a free highway allowing maximum freedom, one may argue that the bounds of free expression are broader in scope on the Net compared with the bounds of legitimate speech allowed on other forms of communication. Contesting this assertion, it is argued that legally speaking, there is no difference between electronic communication and other forms of communication. I probe some problematic forms of expression: terrorism, criminal activity and cyberbullying, arguing that freedom of expression is important but so is social responsibility. The article concludes by offering …

Hack Or Be Hacked: The Quasi-Totalitarianism Of Global Trusted Networks, Athina Karatzogianni, Martin Gak Apr 2015

Hack Or Be Hacked: The Quasi-Totalitarianism Of Global Trusted Networks, Athina Karatzogianni, Martin Gak

Athina Karatzogianni

This article focuses on digital surveillance ideology by examining specific empirical examples drawn from media reports of the Snowden affair, in order to nuance the politics, ethics, values and affects mobilized by governments and corporate elites to justify the collect-it-all practices by a ménage à trois of “trusted” global networks. It charts this political space as a sphere of action emerging against the backdrop of what we call ‘quasi-totalitarian’ mechanisms, which are fostered by alignment, collusion and imbrication of the three trusted authoritative networks. This approach accounts for a particular vexing problem in the articulation of digital politics. That is, …

Mixed Media Visualization Effect On Student Perceptions And Learning Outcomes, James Birt

James Birt

This paper presents a methodology and pilot study rationale to examine the effect of mixed media visualization on learning outcomes in three dimensional (3D) modeling. The context for this study is a university first year undergraduate interactive media and design course. Meta analytic studies in the use of visualizations show positive improvements in learning outcomes among low and high spatial learners. But often these studies are focused on single media and virtual representations. Many multimedia learning studies do not take into consideration important factors that could influence the appropriate selection of media. This exploratory study aims to address this through the …

Designing Competitive Edge Through Job Ads: A Content Analysis Of Seek.Com.Au, Jan Jervis, Jeffrey Brand

Jeffrey Brand

Extract: The word ‘design’ appears regularly in all types of dialogue, going far beyond traditional design disciplines. Yet an understanding of design appears dependent on the perceptions assigned by individuals across a wide and varied spectrum of professions. This paper examines the communication discourse on design across Australian businesses by analysing job listings on seek.com.au, a leading employment, recruitment and career portal in Australia and new Zealand. The research questions ask: (1) what design knowledge is requested by employers in their job advertisements; (2) what industries and professions are presented in the design features; and (3) whether design is acknowledged …

Mining Constructivism In The University: The Case Of Creative Mode, Jeffrey Brand, Penny De Byl, Scott Knight, James Hooper

Jeffrey Brand

Extract: The reconstruction of the modern university is under way, and it extends beyond Massively Open Online Courses (MOOCs). Just as the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat) has re-imagined urban spaces in Minecraft (Mojang, 2011) through the block by block initiative (blockbyblock.org), so too have educators re-imagined the space and meaning of the University Campus. This chapter presents the potential of Minecraft to help students and professors re-think university spaces and university education by presenting a detailed case study of the integration of the standard, unmodified release of Minecraft operating in creative mode into an experimental university class.

Bridging The Divide: Using Utaut To Predict Multigenerational Tablet Adoption Practices, Kate Magsamen-Conrad Apr 2015

Bridging The Divide: Using Utaut To Predict Multigenerational Tablet Adoption Practices, Kate Magsamen-Conrad

Kate Magsamen-Conrad

This study examined the “Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology” (UTAUT) in the context of tablet devices across multiple generations. We tested the four UTAUT determinants, performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, and facilitating conditions, to determine their contributions for predicting behavioral intention to use tablets with age, gender, and user experience as moderators. 899 respondents aged 19-99 completed the survey. We found consistent generational differences in UTAUT determinants, most frequently between the oldest and youngest generations. Effort expectancy and facilitating conditions were the only determinants that positively predicted tablet use intentions after controlling for age, gender, and …

Bernard R. McCoy

With 2015 graduations approaching, accuracy, ethical principles, and good news judgment were identified as top skills college journalism graduates should possess for the professional workplace, according to a national survey of journalism educators and professionals. There are sharp differences, though, between respondent groups over how well college journalism programs are doing preparing journalism graduates for journalism careers, as well as the perceived importance of social media, mobile, and digital reporting skills. The survey asked journalism professionals and educators to rank skills and experiences journalism graduates need for the professional workplace. Respondents included 665 professional journalism managers, non-managers, and educators. Respondents …

Media Assessment Of Herbalife's Crisis Response: An Approach To Explain Vietnam's Media Transparency Level, Tuong-Minh Ly-Le Mar 2015

Media Assessment Of Herbalife's Crisis Response: An Approach To Explain Vietnam's Media Transparency Level, Tuong-Minh Ly-Le

Tuong-Minh Ly-Le

Vietnam’s media credibility is not highly appreciated both nationally and internationally. Domestically, public trust in the media is deteriorating. Internationally, Vietnam ranked among the bottom countries worldwide on media transparency level. There is thus a strong need to better assess the current media transparency in Vietnam and regain reputation for the Vietnam media. Guided by the research question: What is the difference in transparency between leading and following media in Vietnam during Herbalife’s crisis?, the paper argues that Vietnamese media uphold the transparent practice, but different publications have different standards of transparency. This study found that during the Herbalife Vietnam’s …

The Migration Of The Book Across Territorial Borders: Copyright Implications For Authors In The Digital Economy, Francina Cantatore

Francina Cantatore

Although the USA, Canada, UK, and Australia currently retain territorial copyright laws, with commensurate restrictions on parallel, importation of books, advances in digital technology, and the advent of e-books have caused an involuntary migration of the book across these defined borders. This changing publishing sphere has impacted authors’ copyright protection, with authors struggling to come to grips with breaches of copyright outside the protection of their own borders. Additionally, the extra-territorial publication of books are often in breach of authors’ copyright but difficult to address locally. This article deals with the copyright issues faced by authors once their books enter …

Twitter Influence And Cumulative Perceptions Of Extremist Support: A Case Study Of Geert Wilders, Gabrielle Blanquart, David Cook Feb 2015

Twitter Influence And Cumulative Perceptions Of Extremist Support: A Case Study Of Geert Wilders, Gabrielle Blanquart, David Cook

David M Cook

The advent of Social media has changed the manner in which perceptions about power and information can be influenced. Twitter is used as a fast‐paced vehicle to deliver short, succinct pieces of information, creating the perception of acceptance, popularity and authority. In the case of extremist groups, Twitter is one of several avenues to create the perception of endorsement of values that would otherwise gain less prominence through mainstream media. This study examines the use of Twitter in augmenting the status and reputation of anti‐Islam and anti‐immigration policy through the controlled release of social media information bursts. The paper demonstrates …

International Computer And Information Literacy Study: Assessment Framework, Julian Fraillon, Wolfram Schulz, John Ainley

Julian Fraillon

The purpose of the International Computer and Information Literacy Study 2013 (ICILS 2013) is to investigate, in a range of countries, the ways in which young people are developing computer and information literacy (CIL) to support their capacity to participate in the digital age. To achieve this aim, the study will assess student achievement through an authentic computer-based assessment of CIL administered to students in their eighth year of schooling. It will also collect and report on analyses of data about student use of computers and other digital devices as well as students’ attitudes toward the use of computers and …
