Quintana Roo Archaeology, Justine Shaw, Jennifer Mathews
Quintana Roo Archaeology, Justine Shaw, Jennifer Mathews
Jennifer P Mathews
Mexico’s southern state of Quintana Roo is often perceived by archaeologists as a blank spot on the map of the Maya world, a region generally assumed to hold little of interest thanks to its relative isolation from the rest of Mexico. But salvage archaeology required by recent development along the “Maya Riviera,” along with a suite of other ongoing and recent research projects, have shown that the region was critical in connecting coastal and inland zones, and it is now viewed as an important area in its own right from Preclassic through post-contact times. The first volume devoted to the …

Utatlán: The Constituted Community Of The K’Iche’ Maya Of Q’Umarkaj [Review], Jennifer P. Mathews
Jennifer P Mathews
This volume is the culmination of fieldwork that was carried out in the 1970s at Greater Utatlán, made up of several communities surrounding the ceremonial centre of Q'umarkaj and the famed home of the Popol Wuj. Although he completed his dissertation in 1980, Babcock freely admits that life got in the way of publishing at the time, and I commend him for returning to it three decades later. This temporal distance offers the advantage of being able to review the initial work within the context of later research and to incorporate the wisdom attained since the initial writing of the …

In May and June of 2014, a field school from the University of Massachusetts Boston, in partnership with Plimoth Plantation, undertook a second season of work in Plymouth, Massachusetts, as part of Project 400: The Plymouth Colony Archaeological Survey, a site survey and excavation program leading up to the 400th anniversary of New England’s first permanent English settlement in 1620, the founding of Plymouth Colony. This work was conducted under permit #3384 from the State Archaeologist’s office at the Massachusetts Historical Commission. The 2014 work focused on the eastern edge of Burial Hill along School Street in downtown Plymouth and …

Historical Archaeology At Saybrook Point, Connecticut: Excavation And Interpretation At An Archaeological And Historical Park, Harold D. Juli
Historical Archaeology At Saybrook Point, Connecticut: Excavation And Interpretation At An Archaeological And Historical Park, Harold D. Juli
Northeast Historical Archaeology
This paper discusses the discoveries resulting from a study of 350 years of occupation at Saybrook Point, in the town of Old Saybrook, Connecticut's earliest English coastal settlement (1635). Three seasons of archaeological research (1980-1982), along with documentary sources provided information for the construction of a detailed site history. Specifically, the paper focuses on the role of archaeology in understanding growth and change within the earliest area of settlement in a small Connecticut town, as well as the interpretation of these findings in the form of an archaeological and historical park, constructed within the excavation zone.
Is Archaeology Destructive Or Are Archaeologists Self-Destructive, Pierre Beaudet, Monique Elie
Is Archaeology Destructive Or Are Archaeologists Self-Destructive, Pierre Beaudet, Monique Elie
Northeast Historical Archaeology
The conducting of archaeological excavations for the purpose of research without the justification of eminent destruction is often referred to, in cultural resource management literature and elsewhere, as a destructive practice- one to be avoided whenever possible. The following pages discuss the validity of a such deferral approach to archaeological research both in reference to resource conservation and to understanding the past.

"The Best Ever Occupied...": Archaeological Investigations Of A Civil War Encampment On Folly Island, South Carolina, James B. Legg, Steven D. Smith
Steven D. Smith
In May of 1987, the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology was informed that human remains were being unearthed by road construction in a private residential development on Folly Island, South Carolina. This information led to a two year investigation of the 1863 winter camp of the Federal Army, used during its siege of Charleston. During the investigations a black military cemetery was salvaged (site 38CH920), and three areas of the Federal camp were examined as part of a data recovery project, and a later research effort (sites 38CH964, 38CH965, 38CH966). All of the sites were recommended as eligible …

The South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology received a grant from the South Carolina Wildlife and Marine Resources Department and the South Carolina Department of Archives and History to conduct a statewide assessment of the cultural resources of the state. This report details the results of this one-year study to establish a representative sample of the archaeological and historical resources of the state of South Carolina, to be used by the South Carolina Heritage Trust as a planning tool for the possible acquisition of such sites as Heritage Preserves. A list of the 100 most "Critically Significant" sites and …

Field Excavations At Sylvester Manor, Katherine Howlett Hayes
Northeast Historical Archaeology
This chapter describes the overall field strategy and summarizes nine seasons of field excavations at Sylvester Manor. All tested site areas are described, with greatest detail given to the areas relevant to the research questions on the early plantation period, as well as the pre-Contact/Colonial Native American occupation areas. This overview of the excavations also provides a broad interpretation of the results relating to the early colonial landscape, associations between site areas, and the longer term Native American occupation of the site.

The Pumpkin Site: 38gr226, Archaeological Investigation Of A Prehistoric Middle Woodland Village In Northern Greenville County, South Carolina, Tommy Charles
Research Manuscript Series
This report describes the events that led to an unanticipated archaeological investigation of the Pumpkin site, (38GR226) between November 1994 and December 1995. It details the problems incurred due to a sporadic work schedule, vandalism and ever-changing objectives. Ultimately, good fortune far out-weighed the bad because the data acquired at Pumpkin is among the best ever obtained from a prehistoric Middle Woodland site on the South Carolina Piedmont. During our periodic work episodes, plow disturbed soils were removed from approximately 25 percent of the site to reveal 504 pit and posthole features. Only 37 of the features were excavated, but …

Exploring 1670 Charles Towne: 38ch1a/B, Final Archaeology Report, Michael J. Stoner, Stanley South
Research Manuscript Series
The Charles Towne Archaeological Project of 2000/2001 was designed to discover evidence for the remains of the 1670 Charles Towne settlement. The investigation first used a sampling method called shovel testing to locate concentrations of seventeenth-century artifacts in the northernmost portion of the fortified area of the settlement. Once located, the project began to open a larger block of excavation in the vicinity of this concentration. This, the first of two excavation blocks, ultimately included 65 ten-foot squares and the excavation of hundreds of features. This strategy led to the discovery of an earthfast "lodging", which was bordered by a …
