In Memoriam: Harold W. Beams (1903-1992), Richard G. Kessel

Harold W. Beams, long time Professor of Biology at the University of Iowa, died at his home in Iowa City on January 26, 1992 after an illness of several months. Professor Bearns was born in Belle Plaine, Kansas on August 3, 1903. He received the B.A. Degree in 1925 from Wichita State University, the M.A. Degree in Zoology in 1926 from Northwestern University, and the Ph. D. Degree in Zoology in 1928 from the University of Wisconsin.

Fifty Years Of Fisheries Management M An Obstinate Prairie Lake, Dennis L. Scarnecchia, James R. Wahl

Little Wall Lake, a shallow 104 ha glacial lake in Hamilton County, Iowa, has been manipulated for about 50 years by fishery managers in an attempt to provide a stable sport fishery. Managers have used dredging, water level manipulation, aquatic vegetation control, mechanical fish removal and fish eradication with toxicants, sport fish stocking, introduction of piscivorous fish, artificial habitat structures, and winter aeration. Attempts to stabilize the fishery have been unsuccessful, and because of overpopulation and stunting of panfishes, total fish eradications were conducted in 1977 and 1989. We review the history of management efforts on the lake, and suggest …

Diatoms Of Northeastern Iowa Fens, Stephen P. Main, David E. Busch

Analysis of water samples from 10 fens in NE Iowa, collected 13-14 November 1987, revealed a gradient from acid, low conductivity water conditions (pH 5.6, alkalinity 30 mg/I HCO, conductivity 65 μmho, total hardness 30 mg/I Ca) to circumneutral, moderately conductive conditions (pH 7 .2, alkalinity 390 mg/I, conductivity 705 μmho, total hardness 380 mg/I Ca). Three sites along this gradient were sampled 15 May 1988 and 3 September 1988 to evaluate seasonal variation in water conditions. Examination of composite diatom samples collected concurrently with the water samples yielded 150 taxa, of which 14 are new Iowa distributional records and …

Bessey was a multidirectioned innovator and evangelist of botanical education, conservation, and scientific agriculture. For example, he initiated the first undergraduate laboratory using microscopes for botany instruciton and he had no peer as a botany teacher in the latter part of the 19th century. His enthusiasm about the natural history of Iowa and surrounding states broadened the horizons of innumerable students and he was one of the founders of the Iowa Academy of Science. An organization man, Bessey quickly became president of any group with which he became affiliated, and eventually was both nationally and internationally known through his text …

Floristic Composition And Conservation Status Of Fens In Iowa, John A. Pearson, Mark J. Leoschke

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Over 200 extant fens of varying condition were documented during an extensive inventory conducted in Iowa between 1986 and 1991. Approximately half of the extant fens support endangered, threatened, special concern, or other rare plant species. Approximately 25 fens are outstanding conservation prospects with intact vegetation, high species richness, and rare species. Nearly 40% of all potential fen sites have been destroyed by cultivation or damage; another 30% remain unknown due to lack of a field visit, but most appear on aerial photographs to be very small, disturbed fragments. Charles Rueben Keyes And The History Of Iowa Archaeology, William Green

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Charles Reuben Keyes (1871-1951) achieved recognition during his lifetime as the "founding father" of Iowa archaeology, and later assessments confirmed and reemphasized Keyes' stature as Iowa's pioneer archaeologist. The collections and documents Keyes compiled, his interpretive publications, and the records of field work he coordinated have proven more valuable to Midwest and Plains archaeology every year. This article emphasizes Keyes' involvement in the development of professionalism in American archaeology and Iowa’s position in the growth of the discipline from 1920 to 1950. Of all the currents of change that have swept the humanities during the last half-century, the most far-reaching revolve around language. Philosophy, history, and literary criticism, among other language-based disciplines, have developed what is often presented as a largely unprecedented self-consciousness about representation. The message to scholars in nonlanguage-based disciplines is clear: to be taken seriously, one can no longer view language as a transparent window to an objective reality but must confront the foundational political and ideological baggage of the medium itself, as well as its constant slippage in the hands of the producer.

Craft Specialization And Exchange Among The Virgin Anasazi, James R. Allison

A large proportion of the culinary ceramics found on 11th century Anasazi sites in the Moapa Valley of Nevada were manufactured more that fifty miles to the east, in northwestern Arizona. This paper uses analyses of ceramics from sites in southeastern Nevada, northwestern Arizona, and southwestern Utah to more precisely define the regional distribution of these ceramics and to assess their degree of standardization in form and technology. Questions relating to the development of community specialization and interaction in egalitarian societies are--examined in light of these analyses.

The most remarkable dietary remains recoverable from archaeological contexts are coprolites. Coprolites are desiccated or mineralized feces that are preserved in sheltered and open sites in arid regions, primarily in the New World. These dietary remains are remarkable from several perspectives. They typically contain a variety of macroscopic and microscopic remains that form interrelated data sets for the reconstruction of diets. Because contexts containing coprolites are typified by excellent preservation, the remains coprolites contain tend to be in better states of preservation than dietary remains recovered from nonfecal deposits. Coprolites also contain the well-preserved remains of intestinal parasites and pathogens …

Parasitological studies of archaeological sites can be used to interpret past beh avior and living conditions. During the 1980s problem-oriented research into prehistoric- and h istorical-period parasitism developed and resulted in thefield of archaeoparasitology. A rchaeoparasitology attempts to integrate parasite data into archaeological theory and interpretation. Within the last decade,four major archaeoparasitologicallaboratories emerged. They developed interpretive frameworks that apply parasitological data to a remarkable variety of prehistoric beh aviors. Vertebral pathology has long been a useful criterion for anthropologists in the assessment of activity patterns, stress, and general health of extinct peoples. This method of analysis, however, has never been applied to the peoples of the Nebraska Great Plains. This study is the first to concentrate on the indigenous Native Americans of this region, examining the spinal pathology present in the prehistoric and historic skeletal remains. Pathology present in the form of spondylolysis, Schmorl's nodes, osteophytosis (degenerative disc disease), and osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease), provides evidence to suggest differing activity patterns and levels of stress in Plains groups before …

The Dan Canyon burial was discovered at a time when the philosophy, ethics, and legislation concerning the study of human remains are in a state of flux. A number of important sensitive issues germane to managers, archeologists, and American Indians are discussed in the introduction. The subsequent analysis provides a detailed scientific account of these remains and a glimpse of a segment of a people's past lifeway while remaining sensitive to the wishes of the American Indians.

This dissertation examines the construction and representation of ethnic identity by elite groups over time in Belize, focusing on the creole middle class of the late 19th century. It analyzes the formation and reproduction of local white, creole, and "Spanish" elites in terms of their economic and social locations as well as through the reproduction over several generations of representative elite families. It looks particularly at the role of the colonial authorities in differentially shaping economic and social options and constraints for each group, as well as at the efforts of different groups to insert themselves into this process.
