The Journalist In The Network: A Shifting Rationale For The Gatekeeping Role And The Objectivity Norm, Jane Singer Dec 2007

The Journalist In The Network: A Shifting Rationale For The Gatekeeping Role And The Objectivity Norm, Jane Singer

Jane B. Singer

The move to a networked media environment presents a range of challenges to journalistic routines, roles, and norms. This article suggests that professional ethics have evolved to articulate and safeguard a traditional gatekeeping role that no longer exists; as a result, the rationale behind those ethics must shift to accommodate interconnections rather than discrete products and functions. Similarly, the notion of journalistic objectivity is open to renewed debate when detachment can translate into isolation from the rest of the network.

Comparing Attitudes Towards Computer Usage By Undergraduates From 1986 To 2005, Paula Popovich, Nicole Gullekson, Samantha Morris, Brendan Morse

Brendan J. Morse

The importance and use of computers has increased dramatically over the last two decades. The Attitudes Towards Computer Usage Scale (ATCUS) was developed in 1986 [Popovich, P. M., Hyde, K. R., Zakrajsek, T., & Blumer, C. (1987). The development of the attitudes toward computer usage scale. Educational and Psychological Measurement, 47, 261–269.] and used in a variety of settings over the years. In order to examine how computer attitudes have changed from 1986 to 2005, the ATCUS was given to 254 male and female current undergraduate students. When comparing the 1986 with 2005 results, the amount of time spent using …

Cost-Effectiveness Analysis (Cea) Of Four Interventions For Adolescents With A Substance Use Disorder, Michael French, Silvana Zavala, Kathryn Mccollister, Holly Waldron, Charles Turner, Timothy Ozechowski Dec 2007

Cost-Effectiveness Analysis (Cea) Of Four Interventions For Adolescents With A Substance Use Disorder, Michael French, Silvana Zavala, Kathryn Mccollister, Holly Waldron, Charles Turner, Timothy Ozechowski

Michael T. French

Alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drug use among adolescents in the U.S. continues to be a serious public health challenge. A variety of outpatient treatments for adolescent substance use disorders have been developed and evaluated. Although no specific treatment modality is effective in all settings, a number of promising adolescent interventions have emerged. As policy makers try to prioritize which programs to fund with limited public resources, the need for systematic economic evaluations of these programs is critical. The present study attempted a cost-effectiveness analysis (CEA) of four interventions, including family-based, individual, and group cognitive behavioral approaches, for adolescents with a …

Taken For Granted? Managing For Social Equity In Grant Programs., Brian Collins, Brian Gerber Dec 2007

Taken For Granted? Managing For Social Equity In Grant Programs., Brian Collins, Brian Gerber

Brian K. Collins

Managing for social equity performance has long been a goal without much guidance for public managers. We examine social equity performance in the context of indirect governance through the administration of grant programs and, more specifically, the matching of policy responses (grant funding) to social needs. Grant program managers must allocate funding to match needs while also ensuring accountability, but common administrative models that rely on competition can undermine social equity performance. We develop a unique framework to analyze the relative social equity performance of four models of grant administration in general. These models are defined by whether competitions or …

Categorical Structure In Early Semantic Networks Of Nouns, Josita Maouene Dec 2007

Categorical Structure In Early Semantic Networks Of Nouns, Josita Maouene

Josita C Maouene

Despite what we know about children’s ability to categorize, it is not clear to what extent information in the environment is capable of facilitating higher-order category knowledge, nor to what extent different kinds of object features play different kinds of roles. As a start we built a network of 130 early-learned nouns with 1394 perceptual and functional features as given by adult judgments. Then we analyzed the basic structural properties of the network. These revealed a small world structure and a high degree of feature overlap in local clusters. To identify the local clusters, we used a clique percolation algorithm …

Fertility And The Health Of Children: An Application Of A Nonparametric Conditional Late Estimator, Daniel Henderson, Daniel Millimet, Christopher Parmeter, Le Wang Dec 2007

Fertility And The Health Of Children: An Application Of A Nonparametric Conditional Late Estimator, Daniel Henderson, Daniel Millimet, Christopher Parmeter, Le Wang

Christopher F. Parmeter

Although the theoretical trade-off between the quantity and quality of children is well established, empirical evidence supporting such a causal relationship is limited. This chapter applies a recently developed nonparametric estimator of the conditional local average treatment effect to assess the sensitivity of the quantity-quality trade-off to functional form and parametric assumptions. Using data from the Indonesia Family Life Survey and controlling for potential endogeneity of fertility, we find mixed evidence supporting the trade-off.

Is There A Role For Public Support Of Incumbent Worker On-The-Job Training?, Kevin Hollenbeck Dec 2007

Is There A Role For Public Support Of Incumbent Worker On-The-Job Training?, Kevin Hollenbeck

Kevin Hollenbeck

States have begun to use training subsidies as a policy tool for employment retention and business competitiveness. This paper summarizes a survey of states concerning their investments in incumbent worker training. Altogether, states are investing about $550 to $800 million, which is perhaps one percent or less of total private sector training costs. The paper further discusses a study conducted for one state in which we found significant fiscal returns implying that underinvestment of public funds for incumbent worker training may be occurring. In this state, primary sector jobs were created or retained at a public cost of less than …

"What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Stronger": Survivalist Self-Reliance As Resilience And Risk Among Young Adults Aging Out Of Foster Care, Julia Pryce Dec 2007

"What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Stronger": Survivalist Self-Reliance As Resilience And Risk Among Young Adults Aging Out Of Foster Care, Julia Pryce

Julia Pryce

This interpretive study explores the experiences of 44 Midwestern young adults in the process of aging out of foster care. This paper highlights the degree to which they endorse self-reliance as they reflect on past experiences, offer advice to foster youth, and identify barriers to achieving their own life goals. Findings suggest that this identity must be understood in multiple contexts including societal expectations of independence and autonomy, foster-care and family of origin as developmental contexts, and current scholarship on youth aging out of care. We argue that vigilant self-reliance can be a source of resilience but also a potential …

The Seven Deadly Sins Of Communication Research, Ann Williams Dec 2007

The Seven Deadly Sins Of Communication Research, Ann Williams

Ann E Williams

We analyzed anonymized copies of the complete reviewer comments for 120 recent submissions to the Journal of Communication and attempted to identify the scholarly "sins" and "virtues" most frequently mentioned by the reviewers and most closely associated with the decision to publish the submission. We assessed levels of interreviewer agreement and patterns of evaluation in different subfields of communication scholarship. An explicit connection to a clearly identified theoretical corpus and novel findings or perspectives proved to be the most important predictors of publication. We discuss the ramifications of these findings for the current state of communication research.
