Black And White And Read All Over: An Analysis Of Narratives In The O.J. Simpson Murder Trial, Martin Larry Lastrapes Jan 2006

Black And White And Read All Over: An Analysis Of Narratives In The O.J. Simpson Murder Trial, Martin Larry Lastrapes

Theses Digitization Project

The thesis examines the O.J. Simpson murder trial and analyzes the racial narratives that affected its outcome and the way it is perceived by the American public. By examining four books about the trial written by lawyers who served on the case, the analysis focuses on how race functions within each of the reconstructed narratives, as well as within the framework of the U.S. criminal justice system. The author argues that racial narratives affect how and why people can see the same event differently, a prime example of which is the O.J. Simpson murder trial. Representations of Mark Fuhrman, his …

Caregiver Burden In The Latino Family, Yvonne Arellanes-Amador

Theses Digitization Project

The study focused on the attitudes and beliefs regarding perceived and actual burden experienced by Latino caregivers and their use of formal support services. It also looked at the needs of Latino caregivers and explored their beliefs about why they had taken on the caregiver role, the responsibilities the role entailed, and coping skills used by these caregivers. Participants were obtained from two Alzheimer's caregiver support groups in the East Los Angeles area, and an adult day health care center in the high desert area of San Bernardino county. The author used both qualitative interviews and quantitative questionnaires. The findings …

Viewpoint And Orientation Influence Picture Recognition In The Blind, Morton A. Heller, John M. Kennedy, Ashley Clark, Melissa Mccarthy, Amber Borgert, Lindsay Wemple, Erin Fulkerson, Nicole Kaffel, Amy Duncan, Tara Riddle

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

In the first three experiments, subjects felt solid geometrical forms and matched raised-line pictures to the objects. Performance was best in experiment 1 for top views, with shorter response latencies than for side views, front views, or 3-D views with foreshortening. In a second experiment with blind participants, matching accuracy was not significantly affected by prior visual experience, but speed advantages were found for top views, with 3-D views also yielding better matching accuracy than side views. There were no performance advantages for pictures of objects with a constant cross section in the vertical axis. The early-blind participants had lower …

Connecting Ethics To Action: An Introduction To Ethical Decision Making, Rory Patterson

The Christian Librarian

A patron calls the Circulation Desk late in the evening and gets a student worker. The patron wants to know what their roommate checked out so they can be sure to return all of the materials. The student gives the information, trying to be helpful to the patron. The patron comes in the next morning very upset because his privacy has been violated and threatening a lawsuit. The student worker defends his actions, saying he was trying to give excellent customer service, just as he learned in the orientation manual. How does one calm the patron, educate the student worker, and otherwise …

Acl: An Amazing Story, Nancy J. Olson

The Christian Librarian

When one stops to contemplate and consider the phenomena of the Association of Christian Librarians as it celebrates the 50th year of its existence, it is nothing short of amazing! In the beginning there was a tiny band of five volunteers with a vision and passion for sharing Christian fellowship, providing access to evangelical journal literature, publishing a professional journal, and facilitating professional development amongst evangelical librarians from institutions of higher education. They had no idea what God would do with their vision, passion and hard work. No one can doubt that God has done far more than they could ever …

Acl And God’S Call To Librarianship, Barbara Nelson Jan 2006

Acl And God’S Call To Librarianship, Barbara Nelson

The Christian Librarian

Many people have asked me how, as a librarian in a secular institution, I became so involved in ACL. I have been at Auburn University Libraries since 1978, but before that was at a Christian liberal arts college, now defunct. ACL has been part of my life since the early 70’s and, of all the professional organizations to which I have belonged, it is the one that has had the greatest effect on me personally.

Cila: Librarians On A Mission, Georgianne Bordner Jan 2006

Cila: Librarians On A Mission, Georgianne Bordner

The Christian Librarian

ACL members have long been involved in serving international libraries, both by going overseas to work in libraries there, and by providing resources and advice from home. The Commission for International Library Assistance (CILA) was formed in order to develop a strategic plan to accomplish this mission more effectively, through publications, training, consultation, and other assistance. This brief history shows that over the years, changing technology and circumstances have changed some of CILA’s strategies, but the mission remains the same.

What Acl Means To Me, Alan Cappella Jan 2006

What Acl Means To Me, Alan Cappella

The Christian Librarian

I joined the Association of Christian Librarians (ACL) in 1997, at a time when I was seeking God’s will for my future in library work. The previous year, I had been unexpectedly let go after eight years in a Bible college library position due to downsizing, and my heart was still in academic library work.

I found ACL to be far more than a facilitator for library job searching. This association is foremost a Christian one, and provided something far better than networking just to advance oneself. Attending my first ACL conference in 1997, I was greatly encouraged by a group …

View From Clc, Elizabeth Werner

The Christian Librarian

During its first 50 years, ACL has offered its members many opportunities for professional growth, support, and resource sharing. The Christian Library Consortium (CLC) has served ACL libraries for the most recent 15 of these years. The purposes of the CLC “shall be to promote sharing of resources between institutional members, to provide other benefits (when possible), and to help sponsor the activities of the association by paying dues.”1 Woodvall Moore first presented the concept for the Christian Library Consortium (CLC) during a meeting of the Association’s Liberal Arts College Section at the 1988 conference.

The Christian Periodical Index, Acl’S Longest Service Project, Barbara Nelson Jan 2006

The Christian Periodical Index, Acl’S Longest Service Project, Barbara Nelson

The Christian Librarian

When the Christian Librarians’ Fellowship (CLF) was first formed in 1956, those early librarians were not just focused on their own needs, but they were also concerned with the information needs of students at Christian institutions. Part of their earliest vision was the establishment of the Christian Periodical Index (CPI).And so began a project which continues to the present day. It has far exceeded anyone’s vision at the time if its creation. Who knew about the coming explosion of publishing – to say nothing about the Internet! Yet the mission of CPI – to provide access to English language articles …

Academic Libraries In Transition: Current Trends, Future Prospects, Gregory A. Smith Jan 2006

Academic Libraries In Transition: Current Trends, Future Prospects, Gregory A. Smith

The Christian Librarian

Academic libraries are in transition because of changes in the context of higher education. Changes in the world of information are even more radical: the displacement of paper, the primacy of the search engine, the emergence of the digital lifestyle, and innovative patterns of scholarly communication. Decreasing reliance on local collections is transforming the library as a physical destination.Traditional measures of library success have begun to be replaced. Given the superiority of other information professionals’ data management skills, the role of academic librarians will shift toward the enablement of learning. This environment of upheaval will pose both opportunities and challenges for …

What Acl Means To Me, Bob Triplett

The Christian Librarian

What can one say about an organization that has played such a vital role in promoting the professional development of Christian academic librarians? Ever since my first conference in 1984 at Houghton College in Houghton, New York, I have experienced a growing love and appreciation for this wonderful organization called the Association of Christian Librarians and for its many fine members.

The Evolving Role Of Information Literacy In Higher Education: A Case Study, Linda Poston Jan 2006

The Evolving Role Of Information Literacy In Higher Education: A Case Study, Linda Poston

The Christian Librarian

The desire of librarians at Nyack College, like other academic librarians, is to play a significant role in the development of effective research and critical thinking skills in the community we serve. But the challenges of having no room for a 1-credit required course in the core curriculum, cultivating faculty and student ownership of a campus-wide information literacy program, the integration of information literacy skills at the discipline, course and assignment levels, and development of appropriate assessment tools for measuring the effectiveness of the information literacy program seemed daunting.

Changes Coming: How Information Literacy And Presentation Software Intersect, Linda L. Jones Jan 2006

Changes Coming: How Information Literacy And Presentation Software Intersect, Linda L. Jones

The Christian Librarian

Information literacy should promote changes in a person’s attitude and actions regarding an issue. Learning how to access and use resources is ineffective if changes do not occur in communicating more effectively. This paper focuses on eight changes: audience, storyboard, master views, handouts, action , control keys, bullets, and photography.

What About An Information Literacy Chapel?, Gerald Franz Ph.D.

The Christian Librarian

Information Literacy chapels can be an effective means to supplement other library education strategies. They offer a unique opportunity to address the entire student body at one time. They should not be run as a class, but rather as a creative presentation that makes a few points well. Audiovisual presentations and audience participation can enhance the appeal and learning.
