A Framework For Surveying Communication Effectiveness In Institutions Of Higher Education, Charmaine E. Wilson, Sandra Hochel

This article examines a framework for assessing communication effectiveness in higher education in the U.S. In light of cost concerns, most colleges and universities will opt for using internal expertise. This option is particularly feasible for post-secondary institutions in that they are likely to have available in-house expertise needed to conduct an effective assessment. The step of identifying available expertise from communication and other appropriate units is needed to gain broad expertise and multiple perspectives, avoid attributions of private agendas, and encourage units under analysis to view the process as a community effort. RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

Dr. Holtgrave and colleagues at the CDC set forth an extensive taxonomy of HIV prevention and treatment services and review reports of efforts to subject some of those services to formal economic evaluation. They find few services thus far to have been so evaluated, no evaluation to have focused solely upon behavioral outcomes and most economic evaluations to lack formal quantitative analyses.

This article discusses the role of school administrators in addressing sexual harassment in theater and communication programs. On college and university campuses, by and large, men have power. Women on campus by and large trust these men who have power. The trust in such a relationship is precious, built over time through consistency, responsiveness and mutual concerns. Sexual harassment breaks that trust, destroys it completely, and in the process wounds those who are involved. This article explores the nature and extent of oral English proficiency training that international teaching assistants (ITA) need for their faculty and staff roles in U.S. colleges and universities. In surveys of campuses in the Illinois system, the most frequent single complaint among undergraduates was that the ITA had language problems which interfered with the students' comprehension of classroom material. The Test of English As a Foreign Language (TOEFL) has been in existence since 1964, assessing the English usage of English-as-a-second-language students applying for admission to colleges and universities. This article will attempt to discuss who is making an attempt to prepare their students for work outside of the field of study; pose the question of whose responsibility is it for preparing those students: faculty, universities and colleges, or the students themselves. In a survey sent out to all colleges and universities in Kentucky, only a small percentage (fewer than 3%) of the surveys returned acknowledged any help in the form of organized, structured post-graduation job opportunity discussions. This article aims to promote alternative assessment in the field of speech communication. Speech communication departments in a number of colleges and universities have adopted alternative practices as they have developed their assessment programs. For example, the faculty at the University of Missouri-Kansas City examined and redesigned their curriculum so that students were required to show competence in interpersonal communication, critical thinking, language use, leadership, reading, research, public speaking, cultural appreciation, writing, decision making, theoretical understanding, and ethical/philosophical appreciation. This article discusses several aspects of mass communication education in the U.S. during the 1990s. According to professor J. M. McCall, communication educators should be telling communication professionals three things. The first is that academics do know what the profession requires. The second is that knowing perfectly well what the profession requires, the academics have decided not to provide it. This article addressed affirmative action in academe by examining the judicial justification for the policy and the 1973 and 1983 American Association of University Professor (AAUP) recommendations. Those reviews indicated that the Supreme Court supported affirmative action using distributive justice principles. Moreover, the AAUP recommendations are also based on distributive justice principles. In the 1973 report, the AAUP called mostly for increased opportunities for women and minorities to enter the academy. In its 1983 report, the AAUP reiterated the need to alter the workplace to include more women and minorities and added a call for to remove barriers to tenure …

This article discusses censorship problems in commercial and collegiate theatre. An examination of censorship in the American theatre will reveal the fact that the subject has been weighed and viewed by the court from a number of perspectives. One such view was that, until the mid-twentieth century, court cases commonly were decided on the basis of the literary merit of the plays in question. This article reports on the results of a recent practitioner survey in which respondents were asked to identify the three most important issues facing the discipline of sociology at that time and five years into the future. Respondents were drawn primarily from the Sociological Practice Association and the Sociological Practice section of the American Sociological Association. Responses are discussed both within and across membership affiliations. The authors also compare practitioners' responses to the content of articles published in the ASA Footnotes during a comparable period of time. Participant observation research in an elementary school from 1989 to 1992 reinforces our understanding that often inner city children find a conflict between the behaviors and values that help them survive on the "street" and those that are expected in the middle-class educational system in which they are engaged on a day-to-day basis. While expecting middle-class responses, however, many teachers used archaic teaching strategies that have been abandoned in our best suburban schools. This article argues that speech codes are not the answer to curbing offensive communication. The typical response to curbing verbal aggression on campuses throughout the U.S. has come in the form of speech codes--designed to prevent offensive communication. Asia is experiencing a rapid growth in intra-Asian tourism, and is finding that the spending priorities of these new visitor markets is quite different from traditional markets. Not only have Hong Kong's markets changed, but the economic operational environment is becoming increasingly difficult as a result of the change in sovereignty in 1997, increasing land prices, and new regulations. The current structure of the hotel industry is out of balance with the demands of these new markets. Hong Kong now needs to consider some intervention in the hotel industry to further encourage the development of properties in this mid-market.

The trading posts at Pemaquid typified the transactions, administrative phases, and cross-cultural contacts that made up the New England fur trade in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Using archaeological and documentary evidence, Neill DePaoli explores this important yet volatile industry through several stages, including early informal transactions, a merchant entrepreneurial phase, provincial supervision, and illegal exchanges during the closing years of the fort's significance.
