Interindexer Consistency, Term Usage, And Indexer Experience Levels In The Application Of Image Descriptors, Joan E. Beaudoin
School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications
This study concerns image indexing and the affect of indexer experience levels on interindexer consistency and the choice of indexing terms. Owing to the importance of concept-based indexing for images, this investigation will provide information for the development of basic criteria for image indexing practices. Four groups of participants with varying degrees of image indexing and subject expertise will be studied through an interactive Web site. A questionnaire will gather information on indexer experience levels and basic demographic data, and an image component of the study will gather indexing terms applied by the participants. Quantitative analysis will be conducted on …

The Effect Of The Internet On The Out-Of-Print Book Market: Implications For Libraries, Robert P. Holley, Kalyani Ankem
School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications
This study presents the results of an analysis of the offers by out-of-print dealers to buy and to sell items in AB Bookman’s Weekly during two periods (1982 and 1992) compared with availability and prices in 2004 in Used.addall.com, a metasearch site for out-of-print materials. After searching 786 items with 690 valid cases, the authors discovered a high availability of items in all four samples (95%) and a significant decline in prices in inflation-adjusted dollars (-48.7% for 1982 sell ads and -46.62% for 1992 sell adds). The items in the sample were most heavily concentrated in history, arts, and literature; …

This paper reports the results of a survey of student satisfaction with electronic library resources beyond the online catalog at Wayne State University. Undertaken in Fall Term 2000 as a class project for a marketing course, a student team designed, administered, and analyzed a survey sent to a 10% random sample (2,965) of all students with a return rate of 9.41% (271). Almost 40% of the responding students said that they were unaware of electronic resource though 53.8% of these same students answered subsequent questions about use of these resources. Students aware of electronic resources learned about them much more …
Digital Infrastructure Development Within A Nonprofit Polymer Science Library: An Analysis Of The Transition To Digital Serials At The Michigan Molecular Institute, Natalie A. Tucker, Robert P. Holley
Digital Infrastructure Development Within A Nonprofit Polymer Science Library: An Analysis Of The Transition To Digital Serials At The Michigan Molecular Institute, Natalie A. Tucker, Robert P. Holley
School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications
The authors analyze the issues that the Michigan Molecular Institute Library (MMI) will face in making the transition to digital serials. Supporting a specialized research institute, the library has a limited number of serial subscriptions (68) from a large number of publishers (42). Furthermore, its specialized nature limits the number of potential consortia partners. Strengths include a user community of skilled researchers in a well-defined research area. In making the transition, MMI will encounter both similar and different issues than those found in larger academic and research libraries. Topics covered include current access, planning, licensing, archival concerns, interlibrary loan, interoperability, …

A team of academic librarians is using a set of common strategies – assessment, advocacy and advertisement - to develop and enhance health information services and programs to an urban campus community and beyond. As a means of meeting the challenge of disseminating and promoting a large number of new information resources and skills to current library patrons and to new user populations, these strategies inform a refocused program for on-site library instruction, a current health information outreach initiative and planning for a new health outreach initiative. By sharing the methods and results of these strategies in consort with a …

The Répertoire De Vedettes-Matière De L’Université Laval Library 1946-1992: Francophone Subject Access In North America And Europe, Robert P. Holley
School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications
In 1946, the Université Laval in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, started using Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) in French. To do so, the librarians created an authority list in French, Répertoire de Vedettes-matière (RVM), whose first published edition appeared in 1962 (the first edition appeared with the title Répertoire des Vedettes-matière). Since then, RVM has had increasing importance in providing support for subject access in francophone countries around the world as other libraries, first in Canada and then in Europe, either adopted RVM, often with some modification, for subject access or used it as a resource for creating French …

The Use Of Metaphor Graphics To Depict Sleep Research Results, Judith A. Floyd
The Use Of Metaphor Graphics To Depict Sleep Research Results, Judith A. Floyd
Nursing Faculty Research Publications
Many nurses are not familiar with the highly technical language of research and the types of graphics that researchers use to communicate findings, creating a major barrier to research utilization in nursing. In an effort to find alternative approaches to displaying research results, W.G. Cole introduced "metaphor graphics" a decade ago as a way of graphically representing knowledge. He proposed that data be summarized using visual metaphors - i.e., abstract signs and symbols - to show patterns and convey meaning. Viewing human beings as imperfect processors of information who tend to reason using pattern recognition and mental models, Cole hypothesized …

Archiving Electronic Journals, Gordon B. Neavill, Mary Ann Sheblé
School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications
Libraries must take an active role in collecting and archiving electronic journals to ensure that their contents remain accessible to users as far into the future as possible. The CICNet electronic journals project represents a promising example of cooperative network-based archiving undertaken by the library community, but at the present stage of development the most reliable archiving option is for individual libraries or library consortia to obtain electronic journals directly from the network and establish their own access and archiving procedures. Problems involving in long-term electronic archiving include the short life expectancies of digital storage media, hardware and software dependency, …
